I was studying for a competition and I remembered this beautiful song, how beautiful. I had to stop to come here. I remember hearing it several times thinking about my first crush. And life seemed like a new thing to me, I was sad that she had never responded to me, I woke up and listened to this song making my breakfast, I listened to it while having lunch.I listened to the night, seeing the sky and thinking about existence. Good to relive this moment that is not of sadness but of Admiration and reflection. And just allow myself to feel what I was feeling.

This is one of my favourite songs and Penguin Eggs is one of my favourite albums. What a wonderful coming together of the two. So beautiful. Absolutely made me tear up!

Ok, so it obviously doesn't have that catchily tuneful lilt of Nanci Griffiths's breathtakingly moving 'Transatlantic Sessions' version (one of my favorite story-song performances of all time) but somehow Nic's astonishingly expressive voice takes a far less memorable melodic treatment and yet still manages to send the lyrics soaring into the stratosphere. As much as I am as convinced as ever that he was responsible for creating one of the most original and distinctive acoustic guitar techniques of all time, I'm beginning to feel that maybe, just maybe, his singing talents were just as extraordinary.

I would agree in a heartbeat. He could sing the phone book and I’d be mesmerized.

Nic's vocals here cut straight to the emotional core of the song. I think that is why I like it better than any other version.

For decades the only version I would listen to would have been the original - Dylan's. I know he hasn't the voice but in this song he has the emotion and sings it well. However, Nic Jones just... well, what more can you say that hasn't been said a thousand times. Spine-chilling.

Beautiful, so just now listened to Bob's again after 50 years. It's his story and he tells it well, something anyone once-removed can quite conjure.

Martin Simpson does a stunning version of this too.

      I haven’t heard that.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll go take a listen.
