What a treasure trove of interesting things. This was one of your longer Videos, but it would take days to explore it all adequately. Great explore Cliff.
The big reservoir was my favorite swimming hole on hot summer days fifty years ago. My father talked of swimming in the so-called 'milllie' back in the 1930"s. Good mushroom hunting when I was a kid in the sixties. Yep. - Paul J.
I met a gentleman named Dave at the area near the powerhouse many years ago, he was a wealth of information. But one fact he told me that stuck in mind, was that the engine was from a steamboat. The stone foundation at the top of OLD plane 2 is home to my Geocache. You had your camera pointed straight at it when you were standing facing the wall. I would believe that rock cut near that foundation was used to quarry out the stone used to build the building. Dogtown is illusive. I looked several times and found it just randomly wandering around after a hike.
That place was amazing. That water company sign was 140 years old. Would have been awesome to see that incline in operation. Thanks for sharing. Stay well.
Oh Cliff think this is my fave explore. What an awful lot to see. Gotta love that stonework. That last waterfall you showed I could live in a nice little house, the spot is gorgeous. Don’t think I have seen an explore this big before, except Kathy’s one. Totally awesome video. Thanks so much taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
HOW COOL!!! I was stopped at the NPS Allegheny Portage National Historic site and mean to go back. It was winter but the story boards in the visitor center were fascinating. It's not quite what you're visiting today but it's the same idea where train cars were pulled up the steep inclines. Pennsylvania has so much history hidden away amongst the forests.
Cliff, Kathy, and friends....WOW!!! This was one amazing explore!! Yes, Cliff! Please do a series on this area if you get another chance to go back up there. Super fascinating! Are there any historical pictures of the inclines? That would be interesting to see! Thanks!!
It was an awesome adventure! Awesome coverage! So much to see there and yes, so many waterfalls too along with impressive ruins. You did catch the sound of that tree falling! Great video as always!
Wonderful video.. beautiful waterfalls.. so much history..the stone works...and learning about the Barney cars used in mining... would love to see some photos when a working mine..it covered such a large area...also the water plant..it original stone sign ...wow so much...
Thanks for taking me along on a great hike and ruins adventure. I had in my mind M T coal cars going up and full ones coming down as a cable went around a huge wheel with a groove at each end powered somehow by gears and steam. That was a 3 for 1903 not 1909 over that tunnel, don't mean much today but 6 years right there back then was probably a long long time. I'm not being a critic, I do know you like to be as accurate as possible Cliff so I mentioned it. I have an idea we will be back someday. B 4 I retired I drove an 18 wheeler in this area on 309, amazing the history we drive right by within yards and don't know it's right there.
Good description of the cable going around the wheel like you see on a ski lift. I was surprised to learn that cars going up had freight Also drove a big rig, always woundered where all the traffic was coming from when 309 joined NB 81 @ EX 165B.
Wow!! So much there. You did a nice job cramming it into 49 minutes. Loved the purifying plant and all the decorative stonework on the outside. They really put time & effort to make that building look nice!! Would be nice if there was a picture board there to show exactly how an incline plane shoved cars up & down the mountain, but that was private property. The game commission would have bulldozed that building if it was theirs, for sure.
Nice to see you not far from were I lived most of my life next to old Kmart not too far away. No doubt hauled coal from Huber Breaker across Main St in Ashley very close to Family Dollar. The breaker was demolished a few years ago. Some remnants remain and a part is open to the public to get an idea what went on there. Actually it's a small park with information and some articles to look at.Great video
Cool vid, Cliff 👍🍻 I remember going to the Poconos in my younger days and seeing many of those Tel & Tel Poles along the RR Lines just filled with those Aqua and Amethyst colored glass insulators. Judging by your post here, it looks like people up that way have discovered how valuable / collectible they have become as I didnt see a one on those Poles shown. I really like that Wilkes-Barre area and all the State Game Lands up there, especially in Carbon. PS: On your next visit up there, Might I suggest checking the ground around those Tel & Tel Poles for any Insulator discards as there may be one or two that Svc Lineman left behind that relic hunters didnt find. I found 2 on the ground at my house that way.
There a old coal mine way out on the state game lands and there was a water wheel I have know idea why. Is out there old there old narrow gage rail beds too!
Wow. what beautifuly made and designedl stone walls still standing, in almost like new condition, no crumbling or damage from the elements and time, except graffitti and some junk laying around. Seems a waste, Imagine what a public park and gardens could be created there, to preserve a historical site. Plenty of open and closed spaces for , say, a medieval faire, or outdoor/indoor concerts and plays and re-enactments and arts & crafts vendors
will getback but saddened by news horrible shooting of shoppers n Buffalo we, re all shoppers Tops supermarket buffalo maybe i can send sympathy card tr brian ny. subway shooting no deaths wks bk bye Brian
I swam in the swimming hole at the bottom of the waterfall many moons ago. Beautiful summer days ❤
I’ve probably driven past that area a 100 times and never knew it was there. Thanks 😊 for all the videos you do about our PA history.

Do you know where Dogtown is? I can’t seem to find any mention of it online
That filtering plant was huge! And that one foundation looked like something out of Ancient Aliens. What an amazing area.
That place was amazing. That water company sign was 140 years old. Would have been awesome to see that incline in operation. Thanks for sharing. Stay well.
That was just totally awesome. Thank you for another history lesson.

Thanks for taking us on your adventure! Loved the ruins and the waterfalls. I would love to know what is not on private property.
Some maps will show you things like state game lands, state parks, and other park areas.
You can find maps online.

Great video. They have those Barny pits in NC too. People dive into them when Andy gives Fife his bullet.
Great video
Great video Cliff
So amazing!
It would be nice to make this a state park. Good amount of water/falls. Make bike/walk paths of the flater areas.

Perhaps the eroded cut into where the wheel-house once was, was for access to this reel to do maintenance.
There a old coal mine way out on the state game lands and there was a water wheel I have know idea why. Is out there old there old narrow gage rail beds too!
If you check old photos there were two places the took the cars up that mountain.................
i just subbed to the channels of the others whose links you gave, I will check them out at some point.
Rolled my car off of 309 to where you were standing cliff
I stand corrected so that the wheel house
Were the barney cars electrically run ?
Barney is hooked to the cable.
Unfortunately the filter house is now gone.
You park accross309 at dcnr park lot at joe,s monumant
I hunt back there
