This has been one of the main things I've learned over the years. I love a tower speaker. I like the way they look. I like the idea of them more than the idea of bookshelves with subs, but for someone like me who doesn't care about super loud listening and just likes a full-range presentation at moderate volume, a pair of decent bookshelves with a decent sub is usually better bang/buck than a set of towers.

IMO, the greatest advantage of the bookshelf/sub combo is the full range sound at low volumes

What about small floorstanders (dali rubicon 5) and a 12" subwoofer (BK Xlss400) at lower follow on high level to get a bit more precense below the 70hz mark?
The book shelves dali zensor 3 + bk xlss400 were great, but with the rubicon 5 it's my dream setup!

Just bought an SVS sb-2000 I am very happy with. On the SVS website, they have a search engine of a library of speakers and which sub to use with them. This contains the setting for each sub, speaker combo. The setting is basically the same with each sub for a speaker model. So I having Buchart s400 would set the sub at 50htz with a 24db eq slope speakers at 80htz.
You really know when you have the subs tuned in right when you can not tell where the bass is coming from and it truly becomes part of the soundstage.

To turn the sub on & off with the app use one of the three presets and set the volume to minimum -60db, set crossover to lowest 30Hz and the slope to 24 db per octave. Then just switch between your regular preset and the one set up with these 3 most reduced settings for quick A/B comparison.

EXCELLENT review and comparisons to subs in the same class and the variety of speakers you used. Also thanks for including the sub positions in relationship to your remodeled room, that was helpful. Another great part of your review is including the music you listened too and your feelings of the experience and the performance of the equipment. I too was hoping the KC62 had the built in app like our LS 50 Wireless ii's. Also liked that you reported the strange noises coming from the sub. Those were the SVS Aliens 👽that live in each unit tweaking things. 🛸 Lol Thanks Steve👏👍

I use a Wharfedale sub with my Diamond 10.2 speakers. For me, this is a better alternative than towers. As you stated, just set the low-pass filter and volume. If you’re adventurous, you can add a high pass filter to the high level just before your binding posts to allow your mid bass to free up. And if you’re into the British sound, you can bi-wire. Cool stuff. At least at my house.

It seems to me, given their size and price, these would be great for a multi-sub layout to smooth out room modes. However I wonder about noise from running long single ended line level cables, especially 60 Hz hum. I would be more comfortable with connection via speaker outputs from the amplifier or line level balanced outputs.
Note: The SVS 3000 micro uses Mosfets as the switching transistors at the output of a class D amplifier.

This sub rocks. I'm not one to fall for that speakerwire marketing bullchit but I'm spending the 800 on this. I have these low passed at 150db 12db slope and it plays nice. It blends well into my bookshelves. Punchy, musical. A must for any stereo set up. No longer will you need to push your bookshelfs to play those bass notes because you hate subwoofers. This is it.

Hi Pass is more useful for Home Theater, I find hi pass filters screw up the sound of the stereo speakers. For stereo I’d much rather run the speakers fall range, they sound much better that way. For Home Theater explosions and special-effects with lots of bass that becomes an issue, hence the need for Hi pass filtering

Hi Steve, thanks for your great reviews... you are on the level, enthusiastic, informative and present / review brilliantly! 🙂👍
I realise this is an old post now, but I am now finally looking for a suitable Sub' (maybe a pair further down the line) for my HiFi; I have a good system (listed below) which has taken me approx' 30yrs to get to via numerous trying/buying/selling, deals etc! I had a MX accident 'many' years ago which left me paralysed etc. etc, so my HiFi / music are (even more than before) my number 1 interest / enjoyment and (mostly because of scenario) usually listen to my music between 7 to 10 hours a day.
Bearing in mind I mainly use it (90%) for music in a 2 'speaker set up, I listen mostly between 70 - 85db and want / am looking for something that's best for 'audio' rather than 'movie' -- also bear in mind I'm wanting if possible an end-game Sub'... In that regard, many say that the Rel S/510 is great and the one to go for etc, but obviously that's even more than the SVS 3000 Micro and then still more than the highly regarded Kef KC62 🤔
ANY advice wil be truly appreciated 🙂
Naim HDX (2TB) - This is truly SO good for me because I cannot physically use a standard remote control, but with environmental controls I can use it in the same way; When I had it in 2013, it was the first time since 1989 that I could interact (myself) with my entire CD collection!.
    Naim XPS Power supply.
Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 800 Amplifier (Tuned further by John Sampson - HIGHLY recommended, from an already great Amp’ to a superb Amp’ IMO!)... those three components are plugged into a Russ Andrews X4 Block each using an Atlas EOS 4DD UK Mains Power Cable.
Kef Reference 1 'speakers (Foundry Edition - not the new 'Meta's').
Chord Electronics Qutest DAC (plugged into standard wall socket).
Chord Company Sarum Super Aray (not the latest version) interconnects.
    Chord SignatureXL ‘speaker cable.
    ALL the best, Simon.

I just bought one of these a few days ago and I can't get it to produce the lower frequencies for music without over producing the higher end of the low frequency spectrum. I've adjusted the crossover down to 50/60/70 hrz and it just gets quite. I bump up the crossover and the higher pitched sound overwhelms what I'm hearing by the time I raise the volume of it to an audible level. Does it need to be broken in?

I have two REL T5i with the LRS worked very well. One sub isn't great IMHO. Stuck the subs close to the wall maybe 4" and the LRS directly in front and about 2 1/2 ft. off the wall. Set the crossover at about 70 hz and run speakers full range.

I'm quite new to this so this is a genuine, non-loaded question: Would the speakers + sub sound better if the signal was high-passed going into the speakers? So the speakers can "focus" on playing the higher frequencies?

Hi! :-) Tower speakers owner here.
My old speakers had no problem at al with sounding right.
My current speakers though sound very muddy because they need MUCH more room to breathe, which I don't have.
I understood that subwoofers don't need much space to breathe? I want to put one next to each speaker.
If I would add subwoofers next to my speakers, what should I do? Turn the bass down as much as possible and let the subs do the majority of the work, so the speakers themselves won't sound too muddy? Or should I take away really ALL the bass from the speakers and let the subs do everything? (Thinking about buying 2 SVS SB 1000 Pro's next to my Etude Rhea speakers.)
Side note; I also would like more midrange frequency emphasis from the speakers. I understood that if you take away the bass, the mids will come out better?

Steve, nice review. I think I have a good use situation for the 3000 micro sub with some SVS Prime Wireless speaker I have in my bathroom. I have audio in every room of my house and outside as well.
Man, Amir over on the Audio Theory Review called you out last night, I feel, in a personal way over your B&W 607 review. The snark over there is getting really hard to over look and detracts from the good things he does.

The high frequency doot-doot-doot sounds are probably coil whine from those mosfets you mentioned. Hard to completely remove but shouldn't be audible, especially at the distance you'd typically have the sub.

Steve is concerned about about sensing where the subwoofer is. I've never had that problem. However, everytime I'm in a surround sound environment and I find myself looking left or right because of the sound, I think, "Fail. You've taken me out of the movie." That's the main reason, I think, that I haven't felt compelled to "upgrade" my 2.1 system.

    • @MrPRScollector
      @MrPRScollector 3 роки тому +1

Just upgraded my two channel system with the addition of a new REL t/7x, hooked up high level, and it totally disappears in my small room. I crossed the sub at 55/60 kHz to where my 805 d3’s drop off. I am blown away by the sound I have been missing in my favorite music.

    • @darkpatches
      @darkpatches 3 роки тому

@@MrPRScollector That's another pet peeve of mine. The positive reviews here and elsewhere of speakers that don't cover the entire dynamic range seem to imply, "I don't mind not hearing all the music." I used to have tower speakers that went down to 32 hz. You know what made them sound better? A subwoofer. I'm not saying that speakers that don't cover the entire dynamic range are bad. They're just inadequate in this one sense.
But I'm out in the woods listening to David Gilmour on a Bluetooth speaker. So what do I know? ;-)

Apps for controlling speakers or really anything worry me. Twenty or thirty years from now, the speakers will probably still work. But in that time, technology, like phones, will change so much that the app may no longer work. Companies routinely stop supporting older products. You can't count on them to keep updating the apps with all the changes in technology that are sure to come.

The problem can be lapsed support at five years as some companies do. Not the end of the world but annoying nevertheless. We can enjoy vintage audio because most parts are "off the shelf".

I love these videos. I have to laugh when you said another sub didn't have an app and you have to get up to change settings. I guess if one doesn't want to change the LP or CD , is there a jukebox mechanism. Oh wait, simply stream from your P hardwired in the system or high def from internet.
