      Automotive designers spends large amounts of time shaving individual grams of weight from their vehicles to help with increasingly rigid fuel economy standards and to leverage performance. Most definitely cost is a factor, it always is, but to dismiss 9000 grams so quickly is quite uninformed (especially when the weight can be removed so easily and quickly). Not to mention that a spare tire, with wheel and jack etc is often noticeably more than 20lbs.

  • @dperreno
    @dperreno 9 днів тому +6

    I'll be the contrarian. Tires are MUCH more robust today than they were 50 years ago. Most tires can take a nail and still hold air - the TPMS will let the driver know that the pressure is low giving them time to drive to a garage or tire shop to have the tire fixed or replaced. The reality is that 98% of car drivers today would not even know how to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare so they would be calling for help anyway. Although this used to be a BIG DEAL (100 years ago, cars used to carry 2 spare wheels/tires!), it has now become more of an edge case, something that most drivers will encounter only once every 5 or 10 years. Not worth it to provide a full-size spare tire, or even a mini-spare anymore.

    • @patty109109

      I disagree. Without at least a donut spare, this summer I would have been stranded 200 miles from home on a remote rural highway where I was probably 100 miles from the nearest tire shop. And it was Friday evening when a tire shop might not be open until Monday. Of course, the donut spare is not designed to drive 200 miles but I didn't have a choice. Pissed me off that the dead real tire would not fit in the compartment where the donut is stored. If I had had a bunch of luggage I don't know where they think I could have put the real tire that was flat.
      If a car at least has a spare that fits, then any tow truck driver or halfway mechanical person can swap on the spare. Without a spare, but with a bad flat, you have no choice but to get towed somewhere and wait for business hours.

Those “run-flat” tires are limited in speed and distance and are unrepairable. The dealer said that if I do get a flat, I have to drive to the nearest tire shop and order a new tire to be installed. Yeah? What if I’m on a road trip and the tire shop is closed? Then, I have to drive to a motel to stay for the night until the tire shop is open the next day? What if they have to order the tire specially for my specific car and it takes a couple of days or weeks to be delivered? That means I have to stick around for a couple of days or weeks? My daughter bought a Kia Soul and then she realized it didn't have a jack or spare. I ordered a doughnut tire on amazon and bought her a jack and wrench at a U-pull junk yard. Thank goodness a month later she had a flat in the middle of nowhere and I had showed her how to change it.

    How would someone not know if they have a spare tire and if it's full size, a compact size, or one you fill with a compressed air can? What kind of drivers do we have out there? And if they don't know this, I would guess when they are checking tire pressures they totally forget the spare. Wait! Maybe they never check their air pressure too!

    that's been happening for decades. they don't lower the price of a car without a spare. I remember when all new cars came with a big spare. always keep a can of flat fix with you, and an air pump. I had a flat on my 93 caddy this summer. the spare had never been used. I had to pump it up with my electric air pump and got home. my daddy always said. Always have a backup.

      If your spare is that old, it's likely to fall apart after a few miles. The molecular structure breaks down and it becomes weak. I learned that from experience. And mine was only 17 years old.

    If you're on your automotive game, just pick up a spare that fits at a local junkyard. Try it for fit to make sure. If you have space, a full-size spare is best. Then when you have a flat you can run it however long you have to until you can fix/ replace the tire.

    It had been years since I had a flat, but this summer I got a cut in a tire which was not repairable. It was a Friday evening and I was basically in the middle of nowhere on a rural highway, 200 miles from home. Fortunately I had checked the air in my donut spare recently so I drove slowly (under 50 mph) home. If I had not had that spare tire then a tow truck or any other option would have been extremely expensive and time-consuming given where I was and the fact that it was Friday after business hours.
