A spare tire should be made mandatory by law … it’s a safety issue 🤬
Why? I’ve been driving for over 40y. I’ve never changed a tire through 9 cars, and innumerable miles in them, plus rentals. I have had about 4 flats. Aired them up, drove to a shop.
It's definitely a huge safety issue. Stupid bean counters design cars nowadays 😠
@@Fabulousprofound168 90+% of the drivers I see nowadays can't even back into a parking spot without using their back up camera, you think they're going to be capable of safely changing a tire on a busy highway?
Jeff Clark drive through the Sahara without a spare! Go right ahead.
Taking it out was a regulation passed by obama that caused it
A spare tire weighs 20lbs. Do NOT say it's to help fuel efficiency. It's purely a cost cutting measure.
Americans are getting fatter. 20lbs is 20lbs. 😉
That extra large meal with a diet soda is no longer working. 🤪

@@jasoncrandall73🙄🙄🙄
Automotive designers spends large amounts of time shaving individual grams of weight from their vehicles to help with increasingly rigid fuel economy standards and to leverage performance. Most definitely cost is a factor, it always is, but to dismiss 9000 grams so quickly is quite uninformed (especially when the weight can be removed so easily and quickly). Not to mention that a spare tire, with wheel and jack etc is often noticeably more than 20lbs.
Its ridiculous not supplying spare tires for new cars. Greedy manufacturers. 😮
That sounds dumb. YOU are paying for that spare tire either way.
Or, just get a cheap compressor that plugs into the cigarette lighter for less money. Or hit up a salvage yard for a spare tire.

Many cars sold without a spare have very poor reliability anyway. Something else is more likely to leave you stranded vice a flat tire so no reason to include one.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q Almost all manufacturers, including Toyota, started excluding spare tires on certain models.

If you ask me, spare tires should not only be standard, but also mandatory.
These companies are following Apple strategy. Remove a feature and sell it for extra.
Not selling for extra, not even a void to equip a spare if you wanted to do so. There are some very long lonely highways around, and a flat could be quite costly. Had a car with no spare, got rid of it now have car with a spare that is even more effieient. They should at least SELL you empty space that you can choose to equip with a spare or use extra storage. Hmm wonder how much empty space costs to manufacture?
Not only that but now you cannot even package a spare tire on most cars since they reused that space for other purposes.
Why does Apple charge over $1400 for a phone? Because they can
Next they will charge a monthly subscription fee and you will need a Smart Phone to activate the compressor.
Right!!
Pretty soon, you will pay for extra seats as it will only come with a drivers seat only😅😅😅😅
sadly you’re probably right 😅

And the air that passes through the air cleaner. They will be charging for that too.
As a gearhead and automotive minimalist, I'd be OK with only front seats. eliminate all the nanny devices too. No more video screens, radio is optional.
the sealant might be ok if there is a puncture, if there is a tear, those are useless.
Right, low profiles mean that you can't fit an inner tube. Call that progress, cos I don't.

GREED GREED GREED
It doesn't lower production cost.

I personally like the older cars with the bigger trunk that way you can put a normal size tire in there for when you have a flat.
Exactly!
Changing a flat tire should be part if drivers test.
Before you get a driver's license or graduate high school they should make you take a class in car maintenance 101. This class would teach you how to change and air up a tire. How to check all fluids, light bulbs, wiper blades, air filters, oil changes, fuel filter if it has one, cabin filters, and other basic stuff. Now days the schools districts want to cut budget and get rid of the automotive programs.

Definately not new to this, I too had to buy a spare tire kit to complete my vehicle and this was over 4yrs ago. I felt it's essential as I not only drive in urban areas I also travel in rural areas where shops and tow services are not redidly available. Cost me about $350.00 at the time but it's peace of mind.
In the UK, we purchased a Ford Focus CC convertible, no spare provided. Cost of spare wheel? £65. Tyre? £60. Total cost £125. on a car that cost £18,00 from new in 2008.
Have you needed the spare?
It gonna continue to happen until it reaches the point where they’ll ship out the entire car to you and assemble it yourself like IKEA. 😂
Important to also note: the patch kits also expire. We were driving with friends on a back country road when the tire blew. There was no spare and the inflater liquid was solid as a rock. Fortunately, we did have just enough cell phone coverage to have friends come to the rescue. So check your inflation kit expiration date!
Fuel economy rating should be rated with max passenger weight.
No it shouldn't what a dumb statement 😂
Weight only affects fuel economy in city driving too. Highway doesn’t matter. It’s all aero then
Never going to happened ,not even with the ac on
@@adelaferreira4575 the epa does test cars with the ac on. Google how the tests are done
Yeah I always hated those donuts but at least having a donut is better than not having one at all
One thing about the tire sealant foam. If you don't drive a sufficient distance, the stuff will run to the lowest point inside the tire and harden. Then your tire will need to be replaced.
Ive had a few punctures and never used it, total rubbish.
The law needs to be ammended to require a spare
I'll be the contrarian. Tires are MUCH more robust today than they were 50 years ago. Most tires can take a nail and still hold air - the TPMS will let the driver know that the pressure is low giving them time to drive to a garage or tire shop to have the tire fixed or replaced. The reality is that 98% of car drivers today would not even know how to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare so they would be calling for help anyway. Although this used to be a BIG DEAL (100 years ago, cars used to carry 2 spare wheels/tires!), it has now become more of an edge case, something that most drivers will encounter only once every 5 or 10 years. Not worth it to provide a full-size spare tire, or even a mini-spare anymore.
Possibly true. I go many years between flats, and most even then are only very slow to lose air.
I disagree. Without at least a donut spare, this summer I would have been stranded 200 miles from home on a remote rural highway where I was probably 100 miles from the nearest tire shop. And it was Friday evening when a tire shop might not be open until Monday. Of course, the donut spare is not designed to drive 200 miles but I didn't have a choice. Pissed me off that the dead real tire would not fit in the compartment where the donut is stored. If I had had a bunch of luggage I don't know where they think I could have put the real tire that was flat.
If a car at least has a spare that fits, then any tow truck driver or halfway mechanical person can swap on the spare. Without a spare, but with a bad flat, you have no choice but to get towed somewhere and wait for business hours.
Another sign of the failing automotive industry. $60k and it doesn’t even come with a spare tire. Our ancestors would not buy this crap.
In the olden days that had to patch the tires when they went flat.
When my dad bought a new car in 70's he was told the tires were tubeless, he made them put tubes in before he would buy the car.
I remember when you got the full size spare, then the donut tire, now nothing.
I can remember When you'd have to put in an inertube, before you could inflate a flat tire, you mostly had to jack up the car by the front Or back bumper.
So car manufacturers might give you an air pump instead. How does THAT make sense? If a tire going flat and doesn't hold air, how's an air pump supposed to help?
Mine was losing it slowly. Every few days I had to pump it. I'd taken it in 3x before they finally found the issue. Kind of crazy. But yeah, now I have a pump in my emergency kit. I have had a large puncture, and in that case 100% useless. Needs repair or replace. I have an older SUV so I still have a spare full size tire, thankfully. Also, got CAA. My friend had a similar slow leak issue amd we had to pump every hour to get home 3 hours away. But we did.
To be fair, I had a thick needle like object puncture my tire and after inflating it, I was able to drive a little further to the closest tire repair shop. Obviously not a substitute for a spare tire, but it could help in some situations.
Keep inflating it until you get to a tyre repairer. Ive done that in the past, no problem.
I had owned a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville ssei. This car came with a spare tire and air pump.
"fuel efficiency" yeah ok
Well if you have a flat tyre that would definitely save fuel 😊
The worst part of this is the dealers not telling the customer this when they buy the car.
You should check if there is one when you buy the car !
Last year when I was doing this I asked, also got them to show me as well.
Customer must be thick if they need telling.
80% of drivers barely know how to drive and you can bet 95% haven't checked their tire pressure in over six months.
Yes and the auto shop’s 28 point inspection doesn’t seem to include checking the spare pressure.
I look at the MOT history of used cars and the amount that are failing or getting advisories for worn tyres is ridiculous. Drivers don’t seem to think about doing basic checks these days.
I just bought a new $75,000 Mercedes Benz C300 and it doesn’t have a spare tire! The dealer told me it has “run-flat” tires, so I don’t need it. (what?) Those “run-flat” tires are limited in speed and distance and are unrepairable. The dealer said that if I do get a flat, I have to drive to the nearest tire shop and order a new tire to be installed. Yeah? What if I’m on a road trip and the tire shop is closed? Then, I have to drive to a motel to stay for the night until the tire shop is open the next day? What if they have to order the tire specially for my specific car and it takes a couple of days or weeks to be delivered? That means I have to stick around for a couple of days or weeks? What a “slap-in-the-face” insult to me as a buyer of a prestigious $75,000 car! 😡
Just wait till you discover that your Mercedes isn't built as well as my Toyota!

Well, if it's any consolation, you won't have to worry about how your elegant $900 Ferragamo loafers could get scuffed or your prestigious $1,600 Brioni wool pants could get damaged if you had to change a tire out in some godforsaken rural district.
@@johnstuartsmith , Or the threat in a gang infested, crime ridden urban inner city. You’re absolutely right!
My biggest issue is that they also took away the space for the spare without increasing trunk space at all. I would happily buy my own donut spare of full size spare, but it won't fit.
It won’t be long before such things as; _steering wheel, seatbelts and windows_ … will be extra “options” that you’ll have to buy when you’re shopping for a new car.

I’m a disabled driver, I came back to my Nissan in the pouring rain I discovered a flat: I simply got out the tyre sealant, blew it up and went home. Believe me, far less trouble than attempting to change a tyre in the piddling rain, especially being disabled.
My daughter bought a Kia Soul and then she realized it didn't have a jack or spare. I ordered a doughnut tire on amazon and bought her a jack and wrench at a U-pull junk yard. Thank goodness a month later she had a flat in the middle of nowhere and I had showed her how to change it.
An on/off road vehicle, like most 4 wheel drive vehicles, MUST have a full sized spare tire, space savers are only for 2 wheel drives.
If they only knew how many times I've had a flat tire, including blowouts on the highway. I will NEVER buy a car that doesn't come with a spare tire. Yes, I'm looking at you, 2023-2025 Honda CRV Hybrid!
Yeah I don't think it has anything to do with gas. I was surprised it didn't have one. There's an air pump. Somebody didn't think that through and now there's no spot for a spare if I buy one either.
It’s like companies charging $2.00 if you elect paper billing.
That's because it cost $2 to print and post vs email for nothing.
@@johnsullivan6709 I’m sure they still claim the postage and cost to print write off on their income tax
I just bring a full size wheel with me, spare tires cannot go very far or very fast. if you are driving just slightly out side the city in the prairies you'd be hard pressed to find a tire shop, or, one that's open.
I just keep driving my 23 year old Nissan Sunny with it's full size spare hidden in the trunk, underneath the mat. I also carry a 12 volt inflator pump, just in case the spare is low on air. Gives so much more peace of mind 😅
How would someone not know if they have a spare tire and if it's full size, a compact size, or one you fill with a compressed air can? What kind of drivers do we have out there? And if they don't know this, I would guess when they are checking tire pressures they totally forget the spare. Wait! Maybe they never check their air pressure too!

that's been happening for decades. they don't lower the price of a car without a spare. I remember when all new cars came with a big spare. always keep a can of flat fix with you, and an air pump. I had a flat on my 93 caddy this summer. the spare had never been used. I had to pump it up with my electric air pump and got home. my daddy always said. Always have a backup.
If your spare is that old, it's likely to fall apart after a few miles. The molecular structure breaks down and it becomes weak. I learned that from experience. And mine was only 17 years old.
If you're on your automotive game, just pick up a spare that fits at a local junkyard. Try it for fit to make sure. If you have space, a full-size spare is best. Then when you have a flat you can run it however long you have to until you can fix/ replace the tire.
If you have a mini spare, you should periodically check the air pressure. You don’t want to change your tire and find out your spare is flat as well.
I've got a 2016 vehicle. It did not come with a spare tire. If I do install one, it'll be a donut.
Where do you put the full size flat tire?
Ridiculous!
It’s a cost cutting measure nothing more Next on consumer reports why your not getting a remote for your new tv you know that’s coming
Its a regulation passed by obama that caused it
Consumers should be more aware of what they are buying. IF the dealer doesn't throw in a fricking SPARE TIRE on your BRAND NEW CAR purchase, it's YOUR fault for buying it.
They should require car manufacturers to put a spare tire so we can use it to get to the nearest tire shop .

Welcome to 20 years ago 🎉 new news please
yes … must have been a slow news day or someone was very lazy
It had been years since I had a flat, but this summer I got a cut in a tire which was not repairable. It was a Friday evening and I was basically in the middle of nowhere on a rural highway, 200 miles from home. Fortunately I had checked the air in my donut spare recently so I drove slowly (under 50 mph) home. If I had not had that spare tire then a tow truck or any other option would have been extremely expensive and time-consuming given where I was and the fact that it was Friday after business hours.
It’s just cost cutting. It was a dealer option when I bought my car. Had to pay extra for them to swap out the tire inflator kit under the trunk floor for a real spare.
Worst idea especially in the beginning of winter when most Flats occur. you get towed to the tire shop and you have to wait a day or 2 just for them to get to your car close the tire shop so backed up
While the average new car is in the ballpark of $50,000.
Its not practical for everyone but i always keep an air pump in my car and plug kit so i can pump the tire back up till i can get somewhere safe to fix it
Before purchasing our 7 passenger SUV that was one thing I opened the trunck for. Wife was surprised that, that was very important to me. Yes it should be a standard across all manufacturers.
Backup cameras are required but not spares? Makes sense
Canadian Union greed
I remember when I rented a 2024 Toyota Prius 2 months ago. I had a flat tire in Los Angeles. The car came with a fix a flat kit along with an air compressor.
The real truth is that overpriced, new car is shrinking without room for a spare tire.
This summer while driving from High Level to Edmonton, an 8 hour drive, had a flat south of Slave Lake. Luckily my wife's 2021 Buick Enclave had a spare donut and got me to Edmonton, still at highway speed.
A Full size spare went a few years ago in the uk,the donut went recently and you don’t always get an inflator.
She got a flat car in the Tesla because the side wall is so narrow and thin
All products made these days are overpriced and features are being removed.
I worked at a dealership that would remove the full-size spare from new vehicles, which the dealership owners would then put up for sale.
cars get stolen easily, no spare tires, what’s next.
I've bought many cars & I always inspect them. If there's no spare & the seller refuses to include one or drop the price, I walk away. Simple as that
Full size tire might be understandable, but not even the little spare tire? That little spare tire might have saved my life when my tire exploded on the freeway, is SAFETY.
Expensive and heavy 😂
This is totally ridiculous, and whoever invented the donut tire needs to be jailed!!!!
I was afraid this might happen, when one needs to call tow truck to change a flat tyre. Another right to repair taken away.
Should’ve interviewed the tire doctor for this one !
What a joke, the amount of money these junk new cars cost they should come with two spares!
A spare tire is affecting gas mileage that much to excluded it? Come on! And weight matters that much based on a tire? How much cost savings are they passing on to the consumer based on their savings? Are we paying less for that car?
Its not greed. The government is mandating crazy fuel efficiency numbers. They try to lower the weight of the vehicle to comply with those regulations
Car manufacturers ARE'NT stopping giving spare wheels because they're heavy and they want to make the car more efficient. Simple truth is that they save money by not providing one whilst still charging the prices of when they did. It's just profit chasing, simple as that. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Age doesn’t matter it’s in a dark environment with no sunlight to destroy it you just have to check the Air pressure
What you need is a proper spare tyre. Not a 'doughnut', not a can of spray.
My work bought dodge promaster citys that didnt come with spare tire or equipment. When we tried to get the spare tire holders that go under the back end they were on back order for months. Then the jacks were three months to get. Unbelivable!!!
Buy run-flat tires, have a flat fix kit and pray everything goes ok before you reach a service, or just buy a car only if it has spares
I would not drive a care without a spare tire, let alone buy one.

Haven't had a flat tire in over 20 years. Have replaced a couple of old rotten spares in that time.
That's the owner for not checking when buying a car.
I purchased an aftermarket tire for my girl's Tesla Model 3. We take a lot of long road trips.
I havent had a flat in 20 years. Would rather call for a tow truck than change on the side of the road.
Why stop there? Even though it will feel like driving a go-cart, just get rid of the entire suspension system and you will save a lot of weight. 😂
Probably doesn't matter since 4 drivers in 5 these days couldn't change a tire to save their lives. Asked a neighbour the other day how often he checks his oil. I may as well have asked him the source of the River Styx.
Just keep a handmade sign in your car and stand by the road ….. “NO SPARE, PLEASE HELP ! …. Need a jack and lug wrench too …”
Fortunately, I'll never be able to afford a new car, and even if I could, I would still buy an old 90's Honda.
I would rather have a spare tire than some electronic nanny that is not needed, ambient light, lane keep assist, super cruze, bir screen dash. Vehicle weight has gone up over 800 lbs in the last 30 years.
