Great video - I like your spirit of self-initiation. One technical point I've learned is that the rings are most likely NOT designed to eviscerate (the dart would have to penetrate unrealistically and impractically far for that. besides which even a meteor hammer has rings, I believe) and more likely designed to protect the rope against being severed by a sword (or knife or perhaps even a spear). This becomes even more practical (if not outright necessary) when you consider the grappling applications of the weapon. Thanks for your many uploads; they're so helpful. Cheers.
As soon as I saw lyou tie the figure 8 knot I had to figure out how you did it--exactly. First one of your videos I've seen. Sweeeet! And the rope-dart is pretty cool, too. Seriously, though; a long time ago I learned to be leery of wrapping ropes or lanyards around my wrist, especially when they're attached to sharp objects, or if the line could be used to pull me off-balance. I suggest using the old police-style 'billy-club grip'. Using a wrist-sized loop, hang the loop over the active-hand thumb (thumb upward), and drape the line over the back of the hand. Rotate the hand until the thumb is pointing down, then use the fingers to grasp the line/knife, etc. Now, you can have a secure grip on the line (or knife handle), and if the line gets caught or something/someone pulls on it, simply open your hand with your thumb in line with your fingers, and the line pulls free. Then run away, because THEY have the knife. Take it for what it's worth.

Great video, been meaning to watch it. Not only the video, but thanks for sharing links to all of your research - much appreciated. Never knew the ball was a "meteor hammer", very cool. Wonder how 550 paracord might work, maybe too light to balance it all. Laughed SO HARD at your comments in the beginning!! Thanks again, John
550 paracord actually stretches a bit, not to mention it's very thin and began to burn my index finger, which is why I switched to the 1/4" nylon solid braid rope. You can see me use the paracord here: Review of Flying Steel's Kunai Throwing Knife I've done a lot since this video. I've made a practice meteor hammer essentially, and prefer Cordelette rope as it doesn't twist and is quite sturdy. It doesn't stretch like the nylon rope. I've also made a small chain whip length type meteor hammer (which is more like a toy) using a shooter marble and paracord. The rope portion is made out of 4 strands of paracord and I braided it into a round braid, which is a preferable diameter for practice. Anyway, I'll be posting videos, hopefully soon! I have a lot that I want to do for UA-cam that it's driving me crazy! Let me know if you have any questions.
First I'd like to start with how much respect I have for you as a martial artist! I'm currently attempting to teach myself including learning how to use a rope dart. My question to you is how big can the dart be? I intended to purchase a cold steel boomerang product for my dart eventually since I will be working my way up. Is that possible?
A boomerang doesn't sound like a good shape for a dart. A dart should be actually smaller than the kunai I used, preferably, under 6 inches. Watch my Rope Dart and Chain Whip playlist. That should answer all your questions.
Good video!! Thanks for uploading!! It's a lot of fun and I don't know why it isn't more popular! Thank you for subbing!
Thanks for the info Iv been practicing throwing knifes for a while now using a couple different no spin techniques, but even after practice it’s difficult too get consistent results The other day I saw a video of a rope dart and was interested too see that not only were they throwing the knife straight and seemingly much easier than I could, but had the added benefits of not losing the weapon after throwing not too mention the rope dart looks way cooler when in use After looking online I was disappointed too see that all the rope darts I found for sale were dull or rounded and wouldn’t work for my purposes But then I noticed the little holes at the end of my throwing knifes and set off too make my own Your video really helped me with some of the finer details such as rope length and which knots would be best for this purposes Ps if my teacher was half as cool as you I’m pretty sure I would have learned a lot more in school
Wow, that's great! Check my videos that are lower down on my rope dart playlist. I updated some of the knots I used for the hand loop. I'm glad my videos are helping you with no spin!
@@XoletteLife thanks for the update, I was just watching the video for the knots again This was the fist video of yours I watched, it’s cool too see you have so many on no spin
try to put the tassel like a 1- 1 1/2 ft back on the line. this will help stabilize the dart in flight more and will deceive ur opponent on ur range because their eye will follow the tassel not the dart. the tassel is behind the dart so it looks shorter than it really is
Way kewl. In your backward throws you look like a ballerina in your final stance. I like having more info and food for thought in my throwing of sharp pointed objects. Thank you for your great input and tutorial.
Excellent! I'm currently working on a video that is an update to this video and my most recent one. For example, I don't suggest the nylon rope (cotton works better, but certain types) and have changed how to create the hand loop. I'll be posting it soon!
A little over a month ago,I also made me a little homemade weapon of my own, though it's more of an ancient weapon used in war,it's not exactly a martial arts style of weapon. It dates back to at least the late neolithic period that was originally used for hunting before it was ever used for war,but it has historical lineage that's been found on every continent except for the arctic and Australian continents. Most people of today are only familiar with it from the biblical tale of David and Goliath and is a fairly inexpensive and fairly easy weapon to construct. It may take a few minutes to get used to learning how to use but once you start to get the hang of using it to where you're not actually shooting rocks above or behind you and can keep the rocks or stones flying forward then it's all you from there! Still,it's best to try and learn to use it out in something like an open field with very few to no people around,so you don't accidentally damage anything or hit someone else in the distance. Anyway,I can more or less throw some knives within reason, though I'm not all that great at it either, but it's nice to see others out there making their own little weapons and learning to have fun with them like myself. LOL!
Xolette Sure thing! I'm also looking to one day learn how to construct me a home made forge without need to use any sort of welding equipment as that's well beyond my budget so that I can learn how to utilize some basic metal smithing which would allow me to make my own knives and various other countless things as well. It would mostly be working with iron and maybe some types of steel as well sort of like a blacksmith.
erebus38 Keep things simple ,first blacksmiths used camp fire. Simple is better ,nothing fancy some concrete blocks for fireplace and a fan that will blow air from below upwards will do fine for charcoal forge. Also you can use brake drums and some metal plumber pipes, plenty of youtube videos on that one. Fan is most important part of forge, more air = higher temperature, you can buy one or make one if you have electric motor and some plywood, couple of ballbearings and some shafts(bike parts work fine+ is you can have multi speeds, you can make one powered by pedals if you want to). Gas forge works differently but there are also youtube videos on that too. Just remember keep things simple. If you cant weld (which is skill that takes time to master, not too long but still)or you dont have equipment im sure ppl will do it for you if you pay them. Also to make your own throwing knifes you need hacksaw, file, tape meater or a ruler or a printed template(google throwing knife templates print it stick it on cradboard and cut by edges-simple as that).Everything else like grinders, drills and other tools makes things easyer but they are not necessary. Beside hardening a throwing knife is pointless(not to mention that hardening is advanced metalurgic skill, and no its not just heat meatal and drop it in water like you saw in movies)since you want it to be soft so you can straighten point if it bends, also too brittle(like glass, glass is very hard but its easy to brake it) tip would break easy. When making knifes by yourself make sure that balance point is in middle(can be at point for some versions),that knife is not made of too thick material(weight problems if it is,will not penetrate good), and it should be made of higher quality steel. (not every junk will be a great knife, check google for steel propertys and which steel is best plenty info on forums-some say tool steel for old circular saws is best ). I dont get it why would anyone pay 100$ for each when you can make 5-6 blades in a day or 2 (depends on your skill)and have a blast time doing it ,and after that even bigger fun throwing it.Thing that you made, that makes you proud -aint no money in the world that can buy that feeling trust me.There aint no shit made in china that will give you proud !
I understand about 95% of what you just said. I've watched a blacksmith demonstration before up close and in person and I know that there will be much to learn, but I'm willing to go all the way, though it will take time due to my very limited budget and inexperience. However,I thought that good basic shop vac would help to serve the function of moving the air through the fire to keep it up as most shop vacs have two sides on where you can plug the hose in,and one side is the suction side while the other side works very much like a leaf blower and that's the side I would use since they do seem to work fairly well at doing such tasks.
erebus38 Well that could work ,especialy if you get one that can regulate power -only question is can a vacume cleaner run for 2-3h without burning up and also how long will it last when you take in consideration how shity products are made thease days.I recomend you heat system form Volkswagen transporters-they have turbo charger shaped blowers that are used in heaters.Runs on 12V ,is made in 80s and will last another 40 years without any problem. Old cars can have great blowers for forge in heat systems check junkyard you might be suprised what you can find. Also great motor for DIY blower comes from car windshield wipers-connect that thing with bike chain and gear system, buld fan blades and box out of plywood and ballbearings and wola -you have yourself a nice blower with exchangable speed. Althou this project might require a lathe to modify axle's and some welding ,but if you have anyone in area with workshop they can do it for you and it shouldnt cost too much.(pay someone to do it since lathels cost form 10000$ and up).
Hello, nice spread flower. Are the lotus petals still soaking? and; Do you still keep the formulas? How many flowers u can use at the same rope ( dart or kunai). Thanks for your time
I make my own ropes using a twisting method and polarfleece. Due to the danger of the weapon I have made no videos of this weapon. A lot of fun. The South Wind also makes a great rope dart or as i call it, Rope Spear.
I had a friend who used to do fan made videos of anime and mortal kombat movies and what he did was that he used a very light rope, I think it was paracord, but he tied it around his arm in a spiral way from shoulder to wrist and when he started filming he would take the kunai from his sleeve and throw it, then when he hits his target he would yank the paracord back...
You can improvise by simply wrapping a baseball (or even an orange, just needs to be something that is a bit heavy for its size) with some strong fabric and tieing that bundle off with your rope. Should make for a quick and dirty meteor hammer (of sorts). This should be enough to get a feeling for the wraps. Be prepared to be frustrated, though. I found the elbow wrap pretty easy, but I don't know how many times I had to untie my foot when doing the foot wraps. ;)
kaizoebara Haha. I like the challenge! And yes, I have plans on how to make a meteor hammer-- I'm going to make a rubber ball one and a weighted baseball one. I'm not sure how confident I'll be with the baseball. I might just have it for decoration because it's heavy and intimidating. We'll see! :)
Since you know rope dart and knife throwing very well; can you do a video on throwing the rope dart? Since it is a dart, is it a different technique? I have seen some of your knife throwing videos and the techniques seem too different. What are your thoughts?
Thank you! I can't imagine trying the actual wraps and drills using the kunai itself! Hopefully others practice plenty with a rubber ball (the DVD's I've watched said you should wait several years) before attempting to do any drill work!
Absolutely, one wrong move & you can hit a major artery or worse... There's nothing worse than going to a doctor & telling them you were practicing a dangerous weapon when you got the injury lol
Nowan Inparticular Yes, definitely! I know one of my knife throwing friends said he almost split his head open because his footwork was wrong--and this is from him already being experienced at the rope dart! He said it was only a matter of time of when you get hit, not "if". :)
I just watched your video you did an awesome job! I made one out of a kunai too last summer actually its very accurate. good luck, and be safe with your knives 😀
You can always add yourself to this FB page: facebook.com/groups/331359934046/ or contact a local thrower in your area: throwzini.com/local_throwers.html
I made one with my crapy perfect point knife and a cloth from my pillowcase and a small rope and it came out perfect thank you xolette for teaching me how to make it exited for your next vid :)
I know this was made a loooong time ago but... what are your thoughts on this now. Is Kunai a good tip for the rope dart or what kind of blade do you think would be best if one is added to the rope? Thank you.
There is a dart that is meant to go at the end of a rope dart and it kind of has that octahedron shape-- but basically is short, heavy, and pointy, and doesn't have flat shape like a knife. I think that would work best. If you look up "Kung Fu rope dart" on eBay, you'll see what I mean. If I were to do it again, I would try to find a short, pointy, metal weight. Btw, I've become obsessed with kunai after watching Naruto! I'm planning on making a video for this channel on my journey making one using a wooden dowel and cardboard (perfect for throwing indoors at an archery target).
@@XoletteLife I wanted a dart that would stick in wood too 🪵 yeah I'm picking up so many different types of "weapons" I think kunai may be one soon. Any recommendations on those? It's probably on your videos but I haven't got to that section yet 🤣 Thanks 👍🏻 🙏
I sent a comment and it didn't work-- so I apologize if I'm repeating myself. The kunai in this video was made by FlyingSteel-- but he's not making those anymore. When I was recently looking for a kunai knife for throwing, i was disappointed in the quality that's out there. I've bought cheap knives in the past and they're just not worth it. They're always too light and break. But for me, I've found I like the weight of a knife that's between 0.6 - 0.8 oz per inch. You could go heavier, but I wouldn't go lighter than that unless it's a throwing star or throwing spike (bo-shuriken). I did find a throwing knife Amazon store online called AceJet-- the designs are good and it's backed by my throwing knife friend, Adam Celadin. For a kunai dart, the AceJet Hornet would probably work-- it's small and has a hole at the end. A set for $150 is not too bad. Pricey, but that's how it is when it comes to custom. There is a Naruto solid stainless steel knife I was really close to getting-- it's a good weight. But it's meant for decoration... however, for $30 as a rope dart, might be a good experiment. I found it on akatsukicostume.com. Hope that helps!
I saw in another youtube vid about this that you shouldn't use a rope made of nylon or similar material because the elasticity could cause the dart to come back at you when the rope reaches its full length if you miss the target. I am not, by any means, an expert in any martial art style so I don't know, but it makes sense to me. What are your thoughts and experience with that?
One fun thing to do is to throw the dart around a corner into the target takes practice but totally cool when you pull it off, you can also use a tree as your corner
I've been playing with my practice rope dart or meteor hammer and I absolutely love it! I hope to videotape what I've learned after a week of practice.
Wow... this is my first time on this channel... I leaned a lot. Usually, there would be a guy doing this, and it really surprised me :D this video is great :D
I've been watching videos on how to do it. The guy (Tom Fazio) says it's easy to do... you just need to have the courage to stick your neck out to wrap the oncoming rope around your neck. :) I'll be practicing once I get my practice rope dart made. I think you'd love it, Celeste!
Here is easy one to make: Use nail ,the bigger the better(but not too big, heavy nail will stick better light ones are faster to spin and fly faster),sharpen the point for easyer penetration. Then use some fishing line and tie one end for nail's head. You can also make darts out of it if you cut rope short and spin and release. Rotate it around you in horisontal 8 figure and release-with some practice it can get fairly accurate -congradulations you became scorpio for a 2$ ! And if you loose it who cares just make new one. Wear safety , use at your own risk im not responsible if you poke eye or something!
Hi Simon! No, it's not needed, but I highly recommend it as it provides both sound and a visual reference w which helps in making you more aware at where the dart is at all times. You should watch my, "How to Practice Rope Dart" (I think that's the name) for more info. After doing rope dart though, I believe a smaller dart works best-- around 6" maybe? Just my opinion. I think a longer dart would act separate from the rope whereas, a smaller dart will move with the rope. Good luck!!

I've learned a lot more about rope dart and section whip since I've made this video, so be sure to check out my more recent videos. :) I hope to continue to post more on this topic as I continue to learn the drills. It's a lot of fun and I don't know why it isn't more popular! Thank you for subbing!
awesome imma check them out nao
Thanks for the info
Iv been practicing throwing knifes for a while now using a couple different no spin techniques, but even after practice it’s difficult too get consistent results
The other day I saw a video of a rope dart and was interested too see that not only were they throwing the knife straight and seemingly much easier than I could, but had the added benefits of not losing the weapon after throwing not too mention the rope dart looks way cooler when in use
After looking online I was disappointed too see that all the rope darts I found for sale were dull or rounded and wouldn’t work for my purposes
But then I noticed the little holes at the end of my throwing knifes and set off too make my own
Your video really helped me with some of the finer details such as rope length and which knots would be best for this purposes
Ps if my teacher was half as cool as you I’m pretty sure I would have learned a lot more in school
Wow, that's great! Check my videos that are lower down on my rope dart playlist. I updated some of the knots I used for the hand loop. I'm glad my videos are helping you with no spin!
@@XoletteLife thanks for the update, I was just watching the video for the knots again
This was the fist video of yours I watched, it’s cool too see you have so many on no spin
Nice rope dart, I like the background details in the beginning. Very informative!
Thank you! I was afraid that part might be boring! Whoo hoo! :)
try to put the tassel like a 1- 1 1/2 ft back on the line. this will help stabilize the dart in flight more and will deceive ur opponent on ur range because their eye will follow the tassel not the dart. the tassel is behind the dart so it looks shorter than it really is
That's so smart, you saved me lots of time because my biggest worry is the opponent's reaction (e.g. dodging or grabbing it)
this looks really fun to do.
and you two seem like a perfect match :3
Aw, thanks! And yes, lots of fun! :)
Great video! I "invented" my own weapon as a kid by putting 3 small kunai on a 'quick link' at the end of a rope :D
+A Mouse Interesting!!
YES! Worth the wait, great job with the rope dart! :D
Thank you, Tommy!
You are amazing! Thanks for doing so much research and sharing your knowledge.
Just getting into knife throwing (watched your 3 videos on what knives to get) and now this stumbled into my feed, I believe i'll subscribe haha.
The Eagle Excellent! Thank you!
Way kewl. In your backward throws you look like a ballerina in your final stance. I like having more info and food for thought in my throwing of sharp pointed objects. Thank you for your great input and tutorial.
Haha, thanks! The whole art of rope dart is very acrobatic and I'm pumped to start learning it!
The back toss movement has such style.
RevolverPhantom Agreed!
Cool, looks fun. I really want to start knive throwing because of your vids :)
Excellent instructional video Col.
Thanks, RDP! And always good to hear from you!
That is awesome!!! I'm going to make one as soon as I get the supplies!!!
Excellent! I'm currently working on a video that is an update to this video and my most recent one. For example, I don't suggest the nylon rope (cotton works better, but certain types) and have changed how to create the hand loop. I'll be posting it soon!
I really enjoy your videos and it's good to see you reply to the comments ....
No problem! If someone took the time to comment, I should do the same :)
LOL!
Really interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Xolette Sure thing! I'm also looking to one day learn how to construct me a home made forge without need to use any sort of welding equipment as that's well beyond my budget so that I can learn how to utilize some basic metal smithing which would allow me to make my own knives and various other countless things as well. It would mostly be working with iron and maybe some types of steel as well sort of like a blacksmith.
erebus38
Keep things simple ,first blacksmiths used camp fire.
However,I thought that good basic shop vac would help to serve the function of moving the air through the fire to keep it up as most shop vacs have two sides on where you can plug the hose in,and one side is the suction side while the other side works very much like a leaf blower and that's the side I would use since they do seem to work fairly well at doing such tasks.
erebus38
Well that could work ,especialy if you get one that can regulate power -only question is can a vacume cleaner run for 2-3h without burning up and also how long will it last when you take in consideration how shity products are made thease days.I recomend you heat system form Volkswagen transporters-they have turbo charger shaped blowers that are used in heaters.Runs on 12V ,is made in 80s and will last another 40 years without any problem.
Thanks for your time
So can I activate Kunai with Chain now?
I make my own ropes using a twisting method and polarfleece. Due to the danger of the weapon I have made no videos of this weapon. A lot of fun. The South Wind also makes a great rope dart or as i call it, Rope Spear.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!!
Don't know
Scopions signature rope dart
I had a friend who used to do fan made videos of anime and mortal kombat movies and what he did was that he used a very light rope, I think it was paracord, but he tied it around his arm in a spiral way from shoulder to wrist and when he started filming he would take the kunai from his sleeve and throw it, then when he hits his target he would yank the paracord back...
Kudos for a well done vid! I have been playing w/ ropedarts for a long time including the elbow wrap. ;)
Nice! I can't wait to try some actual wraps-- still need to make my practice rope dart first though. :)
We'll see! :)
Finally a good use for kunai
Very cool, looks like you guys had fun too :) Thank you, I enjoyed it as I do all your training/practice vids
Aw, thanks, Nate!
I think this channel is one of the best i love it
+Jonah Powell Aw, thanks, Jonah!!
Very cool. Great vid! The kiddies are gonna love this new addition to practice days come the thaw! lol!
Haha, thanks, BeowWulf! Keep warm!
Still on my to do list. Great vid Colette!
Thanks, Rob!
Since you know rope dart and knife throwing very well; can you do a video on throwing the rope dart? Since it is a dart, is it a different technique? I have seen some of your knife throwing videos and the techniques seem too different. What are your thoughts?
Those backward shots make you look super-cool
Thanks :)
Looks good & the ball is a brilliant idea to learn to swing it
as a kid I used u-shaped fencing nails with a piece of string. they were small but flew awesome
Interesting!
Really fun video! Keep up the great work!
Thanks, Keelen!
You’re giving me these instructions like I’m actually going to use it on people 😂
Awesome vid Xolette and great explanation.
Thanks, Chris!
Great video. The technique is very close to my 9 section Iron Whip, still trying to master it or at the very least not knock myself out with it.
Yes! I see the iron whip or chain whip as the basic skills you would need to learn rope dart. I'll be posting videos on it soon!
You guys make an awesome couple! Thanx for the tutorial.
Haha, thanks! :) I'll have an outtakes video with my husband up soon!
the actual trick to throwing it is a slow spin while speeding up 180 degrees before the release which keeps the dart on a better path

I just watched your video you did an awesome job! I made one out of a kunai too last summer actually its very accurate. good luck, and be safe with your knives 😀
Awesome! I've always wanted to try this!
Well, I hope it helped! It took a lot of time to get all that information. :)

Very awesome! thanks for the videos
Haha, I like it! :) Is that by chance an Assasin's Creed reference? When looking up Rope Darts, that game pops up half the time. :)
That games so awesome! I bet it comes up all the times haha you got assassin skills! glad your so nice... other wise id me a little worried haha
Love your video's! Keep up the good work :)
+John Red Thanks, John!!
So how do you find knife throwing competitions in your area? Great videos btw!
Excellent, Andy! Hopefully I'll have the next video ready within a week!
Xolette yaaayy I love all your vids never stop what your doing:) and thanks once again for teaching me how to make my rope dart
Andy Infante No problem , Andy!
A very smart, clever and charming young lady, enjoyed your very joyful video.
Thank you, John!
Im trying to make scorpions kunai spear and u have gave me confidence
Greylyn Cox Haha, awesome!
@@XoletteLife
I wanted a dart that would stick in wood too 🪵
yeah I'm picking up so many different types of "weapons" I think kunai may be one soon. Any recommendations on those? It's probably on your videos but I haven't got to that section yet 🤣
Thanks 👍🏻 🙏
@@Xolette thanks 👍🏻 Appreciate it 😬
I think its "Naruto Shiny Metal Kunai"
@@GaryReyes777 yeah! That's it. It looked much better than the other Naruto kunais out there.
That's why you make sure you're extremely fast at grabbing the rope with your other hand. I, too, am just guessing.
One fun thing to do is to throw the dart around a corner into the target takes practice but totally cool when you pull it off, you can also use a tree as your corner
Open Minded Interesting! I'll keep that in mind!
Get over here!
Thanks a lot for this video, I am so gonna make one of these! They look fun. Although I have to wait for winter to end. :( Stupid Winter!
Excellent, Ben! Good luck with it! :)
Great video and information! Looking forward to getting stunned by a meteor hammer!
I've been playing with my practice rope dart or meteor hammer and I absolutely love it! I hope to videotape what I've learned after a week of practice.
AWESOME !!!!! NOW i can create it
You really did your research on this one.
That I did, John! :)
Wow... this is my first time on this channel... I leaned a lot. Usually, there would be a guy doing this, and it really surprised me :D this video is great :D
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video, Ken!
:)
lol my eyes were closing as you woke me up
Haha, it worked! :)
awesome throws
Schweet! It looked like Jon was close to hitting you at the end. Now you need to do the cool things like swing it around your neck and stuff!
I've been watching videos on how to do it. The guy (Tom Fazio) says it's easy to do... you just need to have the courage to stick your neck out to wrap the oncoming rope around your neck. :) I'll be practicing once I get my practice rope dart made. I think you'd love it, Celeste!
made mine yesterday! so fun!
Excellent!
Me and my brother are gonna be superheroes when I grow up and this is my weapons GET OVER HERE!
Haha :)
Do you need the flag to stabilize the flight or is it optional? I'm thinking about getting a shanghai shadow and making a rope dart.. Awesome video!!!
Good luck!!
Xolette
Ok Thanks for the info!
