      Tennis ball is actually pretty good when you're just starting in my opinion. It doesn't quite have the heft that you'll need to get used to but it helps a lot with just getting a feel for the motions.

      @uncletigger UA-cam is a horrible reference though lol. But spear does NOT beat sword. Person beats person. Both weapons can very effectively destroy each other. Especially if one persons intent is to destroy their opponents weapon to disarm them.

    • @kaikwonfu2633
      @kaikwonfu2633 4 роки тому

      @uncletigger This post feels like a literal shit show. Army reserves means nothing here. And a year of kendo doesn't mean much. That is about 1-2 belts worth of training traditionally. Saying that your bokken (regardless of stance) was "impossibly fast" is pretty BS. Especially considering they are about the same weight (bokken vs butterfly blade). If he couldnt strike you and you could him then i guarantee it had nothing to do with experience or length of weapon. He was just simply unskilled. And if he couldnt get his guard up, well another huge proof he was unskilled as guard should be maintained at all times ESPECIALLY with butterfly blades.
      Spear vs most swords comes down to the people using the weapon. ANY person using a METAL sword vs a WOODEN haft on a spear can damage the spear enough to render it useless. The goal when using a shorter weapon is to wear down the opponent using a longer one. Or destroy their weapon. All longer weapons are more susceptible to damage that renders them useless in contrast to smaller weapons built for durability.
      As for your reference to using shiai with a bokken to counter butterfly blades, did you see that somewhere? Army reserves dont train with bokkens, and most kendo schools dont until after 6 belts. And uhm, butterfly blades counter ANY katana stance beautifully. Especially considering they are designed for a significant defense that would destroy the edge on 90% of katanas. And completely obliterate a bokken.
      20 years of martial arts and a blacksmith here. But again that experience means nothing. In weapons training, if you actually ever do any, one of the basics is training against weapons of various lengths.
      In short everything you said is BS or stems from opinions of someone with no actual training

    • @kaikwonfu2633
      @kaikwonfu2633 4 роки тому

      @uncletigger I am so sorry that i was rude to you. Someone who is clearly full of shit regarding subjects that have clearly been pieced together by a lack of knowledge. For if you had been knowledgeable you wouldnt have spelled out all of this detail trying to convince someone that already called you on your shit. Anyway on to the response.
      That wall of text is sickening when its full of so much BS. As you so eloquently put it "Child", your story is made up. Claim facts all you want. Your shinai wouldnt be near fast enough even with range compared to a trained martial artist with butterfly blades. ESPECIALLY when the mass of your training came from the shit the Army reserves teaches. So somewhere is a whole lot of BS. Be it you or this "trained" flatmate.

    Even with a bad back, many of the other weapons can still be practiced without twisting forces onto your back.
    The forms we see in “forms competition” are choreographed to look good.
    To do that, they sweep the staff left & right through quite a wide angle.
    Depending what you want to learn weapons for. If just for practice, and possibly turning everyday objects into useful weapons in times of need, you don’t need to sweep the staff that way.
    In fact, one concept in martial arts is efficiency & conservation of energy.
    So once your staff is moving/rotating, you generally want to keep it rotating in that same direction until you diverted the direction elsewhere, or you Fa Jing into an explosive strike. (and the energy is spent & gone)
    When we rotate WITH the staff, we are not fighting its motions. There should not be “twisty energy” exerted on our spine.
    (Same reasons that kick combo’s tend to move in a direction that connects easily from one to the next, not changing direction needlessly.)

    Here's a good one for a laugh....I was working 3rd shift at a box store, cleaning up when I noticed a display chain in the trash. It had
    1"/3" links, so I took it home and put together a whip chain. The handle end and the " bullet " end are made from an old fancy chair leg, each section was 6" long. One of our teachers in the Kwoon seen it and was surprised when he realized that I actually used it. It is fun to use! 😀.....And just because I had the chain, I put a 6" " bullet " on a 20 ' small link(?) tow chain.....I haven't gotten the nerve up to even try to use the monster as a rope dart.😲
    I made it 21 years ago. I have studyed Kung Fu for over 41 years now.

    If only there was a way to practice this without injuring yourself and destroying everything around you! ;) But no, I don't see any other way than to use a hard metal ball or pointy dart as weight. :)

      There's loads of ways! My friend @bodydevelopmentuk makes rope balls that are knotted up into a Chinese puzzle. Looks a bit like a dog toy. They work really well. and I know some people put a tennis ball over the rope dart. Lots of options for less injuries
