Wow! Elvis gave Jerry a home of his own for the first time in his life. That is so touching and generous, just to put it mildly. That is what I call a friendship of family love. No wonder Jerry has been loyal to his friend, Elvis, all of these years. It makes sense that Lisa and Priscilla love Jerry as Elvis did. I've had my heart strings pulled with this story. Elvis bought many people homes, and or land for their house or gave them the 20-40% for a down payment. He bought Jerry's house in LA; he spent $150,000 (1.4 million today) to buy Lamar Fike a home in 1965; he bought his maid Mary Jenkins a home; he bought Linda Thompson a home; her brother Sam and his wife, a home, and also a home for their parents. While he had his father's house built on Dolan Drive, adjacent to Graceland, of course, and others.
When, of course, everyone also got several cars and if you were part of the group, expenses were always paid. I also heard a member of the Memphis Mafia complaining about salaries from Elvis, and as proof, he even pulled out his pay stub from 1967 which showed he was making over $10,000 a year then. And he was complaining, saying he had to be with Elvis while in California, on that salary, and support a family back home. Well, that was in Tennessee, where he also had no state tax and his family, too, had cars from Elvis and Elvis also bought the acre of land for his home and he had has brother-in-law build his house for cost. So, that 10K, then, would be the equivalent of netting over $6,000 a month, today.
Therefore, how hard could living with Elvis Presley in a mansion and no food, clothing or expenses, of any kind be, loving in LA? As he could have easily sent 5K a month, home, and even kept $1,000 a month for himself even though whenever with Elvis you also had health insurance and credit cards, wanting for nothing. While, need I add in the women and the fun of seeing all those great Vegas shows throughout the 60s for free, along with vacations.
Pretty cool to see how generous he actually was even gifting expensive things to complete strangers and a lot of the times he didn’t even want the person to know it was him that’s real philanthropy. But also knowing the full story I think it’s possible he did it not only because he deserved it but Elvis probably felt guilty about sleeping with his girlfriend 😆
He was the closest thing to a brother that Elvis had.
Jerry was the definition of a true friend and that's why Lisa stayed so close to him through the years. It's also why the MM didn't include him in their trash stories of lies and deceit. When Jerry and Myrna got married at Graceland the MM declined their invites because they didn't approve of their interracial marriage. Pretty telling about who they were as humans.
