Actually, if the multiverse doesn't exist in the MiB world, the fix was in. K knew J would wear the suit and be his partner. Makes total sense why K would stick up for J in the hiring process, even if Sonnenfeld didn't know it at the time this movie was made. But it's a great scene in hindsight...
The other point is that he was the only person doing the right job. MIB isn't a military, it doesn't go out shooting everything that moves. They are a police force. Those soldiers went in like a squad of executors, clearing out aliens, instead of assessing them and determining if there is a threat. He went in and assessed. He did what an MIB agent should do, think first, evaluate threat, and respond. He acted like a good police officer, and that's what MIB wants.
Same here man. I sometimes think of this scene when I'm in a situation where the group think influence is strong. Picking up trash people walk by, when someone looks down and no one is bring it up, helping someone with car trouble, checking doors when a whole group of people think it's locked and just assume the first guy checked. Those weird socially awkward Seinfeld moments we find ourselves all too often. It's funny how such a little scene can make such big waves.
That one, and the one in Captain America where Steve drops the flagpole instead of climbing it to get to the flag. It's all about problem solving and being resourceful.
When people talk about great sound design in films they usually come up with explosison and big special effects set pieces, but I think the sound of paper rustling en tearing and the moving of the table, is really brilliant
No bro that's logic. Why would a little girl be in the midst surrounded by aliens? Which means that girl is an evil alien. Like what happened to Edward. Or take an example like the movie thing. The alien maybe imitated the girl form or the alien already killed that little girl before the alien transform it.

@@Mishimakazumato There's lots happening in first scene, but the core theme is "questioning authority". J questions Zed why they are here, and the Cadet answers with a non-answer simply to appease authority. Zed's nod towards him is priceless. Zed didn't say they could use the table, but he also didn't say they couldn't. He asks the Cadet if he wants to use the table with him. After he does that at 3:29 the Cadets emotions switch and shows fear/uncertainity. In the Cadets mind, Jay is breaking the rules and going against authority because Zed never told them they could use the table. The Cadet is really great and makes this scene. First movie I saw alone in the cinema as a kid. 24 years later and I still occasionally hit the cinema alone to get that same feeling of awe again, but its just not the same. Vincent D'Onofrio should have received an Oscar nod for that amazing performance as Edgar the Bug.
My favorite part of this amazing, timeless classic. Love the nested tests the MIB use, and how J just naturally sees through it all without actually knowing. When I was a kid, I thought J passed just because he was endorsed by K, on top of not being a rigid military man. But in actuality, he passed because he thought outside the box, and blew through the REAL tests with ease.
That part about dragging the table really made a big difference to my performance as a maintenance supervisor. When I first saw this scene, I realized that I had the capacity to think outside of the box and get things done. Whoever thinks watching movies is a waste of time just don't have the ability to draw good ideas from them.
this scene is, to me, the most concise example of what critical thinking skills looks like and how it differs from similar yet distinct concepts like "intelligence" and "wisdom". all the information required was right in front of them, but it takes a special quality to use each piece of it in the right way
Jay is the only one who questions why they're there, only one with the common sense to use the table, only one who doesn't shoot the aliens on sight, the only one to notice how out of place Little Tiffany was, and the only one who could make up an MIB style excuse on the spot.
1:06 Right there where Jay seems goofy when he's actually the smartest guy in the room, actually acknowledging that none knows what they're being tested for
"If you ask me, I say she's up to something. And to be honest, I'd appreciate it if you eased up off my back about it." (Awkward silence.) "Or do I owe her an apology?" These movies are amazing
Will's character was a stand out candidate from the rest of the guys. They were all programmed the same, best in class, high ranking in their fields. Bravo 👏

@@soulsemblance3163 yeah. Apparently it is retcon, not the original conceived storyline but it fits well, if not perfectly. MIB3 was the best in the trilogy.
Also it’s weird that J never thought to use the little table next to him, he could’ve easily placed it between his legs and caused less noise and distractions
Only after nearly 2 decades did I finally catch on to what Jay really meant with his question, that being, “What is the best of the best being asked to do?”
"best of the best of the best sir! With honours" never failed to make me crack. It's been 24 years and countless times I saw this. Love big Willy old Smith
Actually J said in MIB 3, that it was about 25 years during 1969, before he got recruited by K. So, technically these movies aren't synced up with the normal real world time.
All humor aside, Will Smith demonstrates critical thinking here. He doesn't behave as part of the mob. He shows that he can think and assess situations laterally, rather than blast away at everything like the other guys. The rest of them are soldiers, trained to follow orders from superiors and do as little critical thinking as possible. He's the only one with the independent sense of judgment
I do like how the actual aliens are being normal and the “girl” is being suspicious. Really makes you fascinated how open minded the MIB are. Never judge someone negative or scary looking . A nice somewhat subtle way how we all see racism.
We dont "see" racism. Racism is a construct of society, meant to divide people. Ceaser said it 2000 yrs ago...divide and conquer. The idea of this exercise is to see if people apply logic to their decisions, in an enviroment full of alliens, the human is the one thats out of place, therefore not fiting the actual picture.
@Alim Kinte Are you kidding me? This movie is based on real life folklore about men in black suits going around covering up UFO sightings and events. It's not an allegory for black men lol.
In case anyone wants to know what unit all of the military guys are from. He says Navy SEALs but there are no Navy SEALs. The two marines there are Recon Marines, you can tell by the jump wings and dive bubbles. The Navy guy there was a SARC for Marine Recon, you can tell buy his dive bubble and jump wings also (3:15). Captain America is in the airborne division hence his jump wings (3:15) and the other army guy was a Ranger and a Green Beret by the patches on both of his shoulders (look closely at 1:56). The air force guy, I have no idea what he is. He doesn't have jump wings or anything so he's not apart of AFSOC. Another thing to notice is none of them have stripes on their arms but bars on their shoulders indicating that they are all officers except for the Navy SARC who has enlisted stripes (3:15). No, that's the really bad attempt at trying to distinguish "Education" and "Smart", no sane people would believe any of these aliens not being a threat, they're "aliens", that's why it's a comedy you see. In a comedic world, sane people, smart people become idiots because that is a comedic world.
@@khoile9807 rileks bro...you can't denied educated people aren't smart ... educated you know stuff...smart is how you use stuff
@@erenesqandarrazor8706 Wrong again, how you use stuff is also taught to you.
The "smart" indicators is how fast you can learn a new knowledge, how fast and how much data your brain can process.
Street smart here is just you've learnt stuff that is taught on the street. In order to make it to the top of any "education", you 99% have to be smart yourself in order to distinguish yourself from the rest.
It's just that in this case, that kind of smart is not needed.
You're street smart, how would that help you if people need you to fix a nuclear reactor? You can't comprehend the knowledge of that reactors, how can you fix it?
How can you "use" stuff if you can't understand the stuff?
Your failure is defining the word alone crumbles your argument.
@@erenesqandarrazor8706 I totally agree with you, educated does not mean smart, educated can be dumb. Smart is the way you think and the way you treat everything in a more flexible way. The other point is that he was the only person doing the right job. MIB isn't a military, it doesn't go out shooting everything that moves. They are a police force. Those soldiers went in like a squad of executors, clearing out aliens, instead of assessing them and determining if there is a threat.

Same here man. I sometimes think of this scene when I'm in a situation where the group think influence is strong. Picking up trash people walk by, when someone looks down and no one is bring it up, helping someone with car trouble, checking doors when a whole group of people think it's locked and just assume the first guy checked. My favorite part of this amazing, timeless classic. Love the nested tests the MIB use, and how J just naturally sees through it all without actually knowing. When I was a kid, I thought J passed just because he was endorsed by K, on top of not being a rigid military man.
