The bouncer you say looking like having a porn star moustache actually was one! Big Gypsy Dave Cooper! Moved into main stream roles in things like The Elephant Man and ironically as one of the performers in the adult movie scene (with Linzi Drew) in An American Werewolf In London. I remember when Take It Or Leave It was due to be released. As a Madness fanatic I went and asked the manager of our ABC if and when they were going to show it. He assured me they would be. They never bleeding did! I'd even bought an expensive Maxell chrome C120 cassette tape to smuggle my little cassette recorder and microphone into the screening to record the audio! Had to wait till home videos came along and I bought it and Complete Madness in their cardboard boxes for £19.99 each which back then was a bargain! Loved it! Still got the blank c120! Madness were the first band I ever saw live. 1979 at the Victoria Hall Hanley Stoke on Trent. Thirteen year old me wore my dad's old demob suit with the arms and legs safety pinned up to 'fit'. Still love them. How can you not? Great video as always and great to have you back rambling! 😉
Cheers Andrew, I thought I recocnised him from American Werewolf but didn't check to see haha brilliant. Awesome story mate, I enjoyed reading your comment, the early days of Madness were brilliant times, the best times.
Great movie and review. I remember at the time it got a very limited cinema release and I didn't see it until I bought the VHS a few years later. The teddy boy singer at the June 1977 backyard gig (Si Birdsall's birthday party - he's the skinhead in the lightsaber fight with Barso) was Dikron Tulane. Think it's mentioned in Before We Was We, but he was just someone they knew. Si agreed to let them play and they had to get someone at short notice. Have read that he (Dikron) was then trying to make a career in acting and went on to appear in The Walking Dead amongst things. Loads of these interesting snippets in their history
Nice video Stripey! My word what a blast from the past - I think you had to be there 🤣 I will give it a view on UA-cam - probably when no one else is about. Wifey is Australian and doesn’t get the ‘nutty sound’ 🤣
Hi Stripey, Many thanks for that - I agree the film is a bit rough around the edges, but it all seems appropriate for the times when Madness were first starting out..(good luck with the beard)....
Hi Stripey Great video as always. I realised the other day that i dont own any madness on vinyl, not even a compilation. I love them so much especially their debut "One Step Beyond". I will definately have to sort that out and their original records are so cheap so i have no excuse. Keep up the great vids. Take care.
I must of watched the film 25 times or more. It is a great film! The fact it is rough around the edges and made on a very small budget adds to the films appeal and makes the film more life like and believable. Great Review.
It's not playing anywhere near me, unfortunately, James, but I'll be picking up the Blu-Ray on Monday. The copy I have is awful so this should be good. The BFI put out some fantastic stuff.
