Ritchie, "Bring me my Rickenbacker", "No my other Rickenbacker", "No my other Rickenbacker", "No my other Rickenbacker" Lol Saw two YES Epics and Classics shows, tix to one more. Can't get enough of you guys and my buddy Jon!! TY Richie and Band Geeks!
I agree 100%. The iPhone videos are good. But to be able to hear it as a professional recording would be incredibly awesome. Probably the best live Yes music since the ARW tour.
Your family dynamic is really cool. I love the enthusiam, craftsmanship, and passion poured into this instrument to get it dialed. I would love to play an instrument that had this effort put into it. I imagine you'll keep this forever as a real memento that will live on and carry these memories with it.
Your uncle Phil never ceases to amaze! Totally digging the SlimeGlo! You and Phil should be proud of this dechunkification! Can’t wait to hear you lay down some funk after the Yes-testing is complete! 💪🏻🎸🎶🤘🏻
Awesome transformation! I too have a nice collection of Rickenbacker basses that I have accumulated since 1975. I have a total of 7 Ric's dating back to January of 1972 which I bought at Gracin's music in Hempstead, Long Island back in 1980. It was hanging on their wall in the shop and it was being used as a parts bass. What caught my eye was the dotted fingerboard and no binding. Prior to that, there were four bass players that I knew of who played those RM1999's. The bass in the shop turned out to be a neck-thru 4000 with the route for the neck pickup already existing from factory. I recently had it appraised and I was told that it was a rare bass since only a hand full had been made in that period. It has the walnut neck wings as well as the bridge with only three screws and the notch in the center. Throughout the years, I have managed to locate the preiod correct parts that were missing, as well as a vintage toaster and it is now a 4001s just like McCartney's! I played in a yes tribute band many years ago and prior to Chris Squire signature model availability, I would use my '72 for the job. I love your slime green 4003sw. Not only does it look great, it sounds incredible.
Richie....as a die-hard YES fan (my first time ever hearing them was in 1971 opening for ELP at the Philly Spectrum) I became a fan for life. YES has always been a key aspect of my emotional well-being and I have to say how much I have been saddened by what the band (or what's left of it) has become. I found the Band Geeks during Lockdown a few years back and am a big fan of your work. Upon seeing you guys covering classic Yes tracks made me realize that it would only be a matter of time before Jon would come calling. I was so excited to hear about this tour but as I am living in London now, I wasn't able to arrange the trip stateside to see the shows. Thank God for You Tube. I just had to tell you how much joy you have brought back into this old man's heart. As a bass player myself, Chris was always an inspiration and you have done his legacy justice sir. I love your interpretations of his style and sound. And I LOVE the Slimeglo Rick! It would be awesome if you guys could make a European/UK tour happen. I can't imagine that the awesome reaction you're getting from these shows isn't going to convince you all to extend this to something that can bring joy to all the Yes fans everywhere. But honestly, even if you are only able to add some more East Coast shows....I'll fly over for em. Keep on doing what you do and give my best to Jon and the rest of the Geeks.
Saw you guys last night in Collingswood NJ- awesome on spot and tight performance and this bass sounded so solid all night - sound mix was great all night too 👍
The amount of care and family effort with passion that went into this bass makes me think that's why it sounds SO damned perfect. Heart of The Sunrise sounds just perfect on this bass in this incredible musician's hands. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this despite knowing very little about guitar modification/restoration. Thanks for sharing this.
I've been using a "Stereo system" like you describe for many years. Two separate pickups, one for bass Amp the other for the treble Amp. Fantastic range of sound. Perfect Rickenbacker for playing with Jon Anderson. Even if it's snot green!
I was wondering about that bass you used on the AMAZING videos of your shows with Jon Anderson. That must have been a HUGE thrill! I've been a fan of Band Geeks for a while. You have an amazing support system... What a cool-ass instrument you all created!
I remembered an old instagram post you made several months ago Richie, showing mystery color chips...I figured you were paint matching a project and here it is. Bet you didn't know this fangirl dabbles in luthiery 😻 I was biting my nails watching the wood fly off with the freehand power sander. Then Uncle Phil's bridge recess...trepidation fully set in once that pocket was routed! But You obviously had faith in the process and the Castellano-CollaBro-ation paid off in the end. Proper setup...Voila.. Fantastic sounding Ric that is as unique as you are! It is gorgeous❤ Thanks for posting I really enjoyed this!
Just got home from the Reading show. I’ve wanted to see you guys live since I first saw the Roundabout Quarantine video a couple of years ago. What a phenomenal performance. You sounded as great as Yes did when I first saw them at the Nassau Coliseum in 1972. No, probably better because it was a much smaller venue and sound systems are just better today. Thanks for making this happen. Also, the bass looked and sounded great.
Saw your show in Reading PA a couple days ago. Jon and you guys were awesome! The bass looks and sounds great, and you played the heck out of it. Chris would be proud.
lots of luv richie; eager to see you again soon. tour the west coast and we'll chase you. wondering about the signal path here. that rickie sounds muted compared to others...lemmy's. carry on Sir; we love everything you post...especially the help you give all of us helix nerds.
Beautiful looking bass. I've always wanted a 4001 Rick after discovering Chris Squire when Fragile was released back in the day. Saw him on the 90125 Tour. Loved that "Yes line-up". Saw a UA-cam video of you and the band in concert with Jon. Killer stuff. What an honor it must be to be on tour with Jon Anderson. He is the " Voice of Yes"!!!!!!!
I found a new maple 4003-S on Sweetwater last year for 1499.00, that seemed to me to be an unreasonably low price, so I bought it. Having a 1980 4001 (only owner), and a 4001CS, I found exactly the same issues you did. Neck too thick crosswise and the bridge being mounted too high to be able to lower the strings onto the frets. In my opinion the strings should always be able to be lowered onto the frets, and work up from there. My initial thought was to route out a 1/16" deep area to lower the bridge, but to live with the neck. After seeing this video I am definitely going to do the route for the tail piece, and slim the nick down too. I love maple, so that stays :) Great video, thanks for posting!
You said in the video that you routed the cavity for the bridge/tailpiece at 1/8" Did you find that the 1/8" bridge drop allowed the saddles to be raised to a sufficient degree, or would you recommend a shallower cavity, maybe 1/16th"? that was my thinking. When dealing with frets and bridges I always overestimate needed height distances...
@@ricky4001cs the saddles are up pretty high with the 1/8th route, but there’s still room in either direction, height-wise. I think we could’ve probably gotten away with a 1/16th route it I’m being honest.
This is an exciting video - nice one Richie. The guitar colour is amazing - looks fantastic! Loving your gigs with Jon Anderson - your whole band is killing it.
Richie, I offer my sincere thanks to you and to the rest of the Band Geeks, for bringing me one more magical Yes concert experience with Jon Anderson. I've seen Yes in concert five times, starting with the Union tour in 1991. Every one of those concerts was magical and memorable. But with the passing of Chris Squire, with Yes-ARW disbanding, and with Steve Howe leading a lackluster band of replacements, I didn't think I would ever again have a Yes concert experience. You and your bandmates, along with the legendary Jon Anderson, brought me that experience one more time last night (in St. Charles, Missouri), and I am very grateful. There were imperfections, like Jon flubbing a line in Awaken, and some problems with the mix (especially the keys in Awaken), but that didn't matter much. It was wonderful, and it was much closer to genuinely seeing Yes in concert than I thought I would ever experience again. And you guys absolutely nailed Gates of Delirium -- a massively impressive feat! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
I've been watching the Band Geeks play covers for years and loved their Yes covers. I hoped Jon would see the video's and hire you. I thought that it would be my dream concert if you toured with Anderson. And it was absolutely fantastic, you covered Squire's bass and vocals better than anyone would have thought possible. The rest of the band was fabulous also, thanks for stopping in Buffalo!
It looks very much like a "Yes" Bass should! The greens and yellows .. sounds great too ! Y'all are making me very proud , listening to some of the uploads on UA-cam ...y'all sound so good .. Very cool mods Richie. I have a '78 4001 that I bought new. Not sure I want to mod it now, but getting a 4003 would be a good platform. Thanks for sharing! Cheers
Awesome. Thank you! I was thinking how that’s a very “Yes” Chris Squire looking bass, and I had no idea you play for Jon, so man you really nailed it, plus you inspired my own guitar workshop ideas. ☕️
Saw you play it last night in St Charles. Magnificent show by the way. Jon held up very nicely and you all made it look so easy. My thanks for the effort! Close to the Edge was EPIC!!!!🤘🤘

"Tale Of Two Slick Ricks" Hi Ritchie, awesome basses. We've chatted before... about Telecasters and Eric's custom guitars. I was born in Staten Island.... So cool your family has a store there. Love your "Lockdown" version of Godzilla with BOC. Keep on rockin'.
After viewing this video, I'm so very tempted to get the U shape neck on my 2012 4003 Fireglo sanded down and rounded a little to get it to a C/D shape. Its something I have gotten accustomed to over time, but the annoyance has always been there. The factory pickup's, wider string spacing and even the push/pulls work fine for me since it has the dual output jacks. Big kudos to the Castellano family, especially to young Phil and his having the courage of treating fine instruments like a piece of wood and transforming it to a gorgeous piece of artwork without fear of possible damage. SlimeGlo is most worthy of residing in the GhostBuster's firestation Headquarters in NYC.... I aint afraid of no ghosts!
That would be really cool. Although if I got this made from scratch, I'd want the scale shortened to vintage spec. This bass is a little long... but that's probably why it sounds good.
We need a series called “In the spray booth with Uncle Phil” I’ve got a Rick copy with a stupidly thick next profile and this has given me some pointers on how to sort that out!
That bass sounds great. The neck work scared the crap ou5 of me though, and I know a few pro luthiers. 🤣From what I’m aware, the addition of the capacitor on the back pickup wasn’t to level up the volumes; you’ll actually find with a lot of the older basses (pre ‘73 anyway) that the neck pickup is actually louder than the bridge pickup even when you take the cap out. It’s generally considered (how accurately I’m not entirely sure) to be more to do with the limitations of amplifiers at the time and an attempt to improve clarity.
Great video. Love Ricks but I've never had much luck with them. Saw you in Buffalo with BOC great show at Riviera Theater couldn't get tickets for the Jon Anderson show..pissed lol. As a fellow bass player love your tone & playing.
As a big BOC fan I remember the first time I saw you. You were on bass with a 5 string. Your solo was like Van Halen! How can I share a Photo of my old Rick with you?
Cool video! Watching the neck get scraped and sanded...delicate parts of my nether regions did shrivel 😂 But in the end it came out great indeed. Cheers from a fellow Jim McE student
Absolutely worthy of a Ric Signature Series! When he whipped out the DA sander and started taking down the through-neck, I almost peed. Fantastic craftsmanship!!! Definitely NOT gooched!! What do you use to condition the back of the neck? Is it still unfinished? It sounds goddamn AWESOME!
I have one, with the modern/vintage push-pull (and stereo) with the white binding that cuts into your arm and the diamonds. What was a guy that was influenced by Geddy Lee and Chris Squire supposed to do? I’m pretty sure I have the wider neck, because it has not one, but two truss rods. Overall, it’s about a $1000 bass that has a $1000 truss rod cover (that says Rickenbacker). Still sounds like the business, though!
Watching people with skills do their thing never gets old.
Yeah, I Love Work Too, I Can Watch It All Day‼️🔊🤡🔊

Great video. Love Ricks but I've never had much luck with them. Saw you in Buffalo with BOC great show at Riviera Theater couldn't get tickets for the Jon Anderson show..pissed lol. As a fellow bass player love your tone & playing.
Super well done vid. Now I'm thinking of taking a sander to some of my other guitars!
U guys sound better than yes,,,excellent job
As a big BOC fan I remember the first time I saw you. You were on bass with a 5 string. Your solo was like Van Halen! How can I share a Photo of my old Rick with you?
👍🎸 looks & sounds great
A family of mad scientists😯
Great job , love Ric's have a mint condition 2021 4003S in Fireglo
OMG!!! Amazing sound!! Chris Squire woulda been jeal. Still not sure bout the colour but ho hum. Rock on .
Maybe you could have a naming competition for that colour! I'm thinking "Nuclear Snot"!
They all had 2 truss rods up until very recently, even the ‘60s ones.
Love this Richie , Thanks .
The bass suits you well!
I played a Walnut Rick and the neck to me was very chucky than my older Rick which I love the neck profile.
Yeah, this neck was ridiculously huge.
