Simon De Montfort: The Friendship That Led To Civil War | Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty | Chronicle

- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- The history of the Plantagenets continues with the story of King Henry III and his treacherous brother-in-law Simon de Montfort, the Earl of Leicester. This is the story of their bitter struggle for the soul of the nation and how one friendship turned into a civil war.
The dynasty on which Game of Thrones is based is masterfully brought to life by Dan Jones in this four part series. Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world.

I highly recommend the books, The Plantagenets and The War of the Roses by Dan Jones. Two great books.
Dan Jones, producer of the program that brought you a 'diverse' Anne Boleyn.
Falls The Shadow by Sharon Penman
@@CodonQuixote Also about Richard the III "The Sunne in Splendour", is an excellent book by Sharon K. Penman. It paints Richard in rather a better light than perhaps he deserved but is none the less an historically accurate and really engaging read.
@@Endtimescoming Thanks for the suggestion!
The Plantagenets is a great read; wonderful suggestion.
Love the enthusiasm of Dan Jones in his documentaries. Best narrator for this type of videos. 👏🏻
The series “Britains Bloody Crown” is even more excellent! The actors and sequences are masterful, as is Dan narrating! I watch them over and over, wishing they would be made into a movie!
More and more when I watch these documentaries, it gets me wondering what my relatives were doing back in England during that era... What battles they might have been involved with, if any
Keep ou
They could have dung mongers, or battlefield scavengers. Or barons.
this is the only channel for which I’ve clocked
the bell icon to receive notifications so I don’t miss an upload 🤣
Love to hear that.
I love all things medieval!!!

Thank you for creating this channel and the terrific content that is here! Am excited for the future of this channel!! Thx again!!
Thank you 🤍 glad to have you with us!
They just stole this documentary from timeline and rebranded the name from what I see, but good job.
@@nathenallen15 It's not stolen from that channel. Both Timeline and this new channel are sister channels. But yes, it's a rebranded title.
Alfred would have been an incredible king during this period of history. 400 years prior, he was an exceptional king but.. he should've reigned during this period..
I watched it again. It's a really good documentary. Thanks lords and ladies.
Thanks for uploading a great, high quality documentary.
Ironic that the thing which promised to keep him accountable, Parliament, is one of those things for which he is remembered
Thank you very much from the bottom of muy heart
You are very welcome!!
stunningly good
Fantastic! I can’t seem to find the video on Kings Richard and John. It seems to be missing in the series.
13:53
Henry III: " I AM THE KING!"
Simon DeMonfort: "Any man who calls himself a king is no true king. I'll make sure you understand that when I win your war for you."
He put his most loyal dude on trial. This is some messed up stuff right here.
Just finished Dan's "Wars of the Roses." Nobody can beat him for popular medieval history.
Outstanding
I'm directly descended from the Plantagenets... it's good to know my ancestors were so well adjusted 😅/s
So am I, from two separate lines. Good to know our heritage...
@@timnewman1172 How would you find such a thing?
@@siisjwj7647 did a search...
@@timnewman1172 Where? Could you tell me?
9:35 i wasnt prepared for this song. It sounds epic. Does anyone know the name of it or i can find it?
We need a new magna carta that limits tax collection by politicians
Medieval Europe is fascinating.
Why does it seem that I'm missing a big part of the story? Started with The Plantagenets, the bloodiest dynasty which ended in the death of Henry ll. The second part is talking about Henry III. Is there a part I'm missing in the series about Richard and John?
The whole royal family thing, incest, wife swapping, chopping off heads, recycling names...it's like a generational spaghetti bowl of confusion for me, lol
Henry the 2nd was the first plantagenet
Check the "Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty". It goes from Henry II up to Henry IV, including Richard and John. The Plantagenets reigned about 250 years or so until Henry IV when the Lancastrians came to the fore.
@@TheKoolbraider Thank you!
@@lorirussell6679 I thought I'd just check it out. Not really much about John other than the Magna Carta. Richard, also not so much, just lots of fighting. I think Mr. Jones broke the history into the most relevant areas. Tings get better explained from Henry III on up. (Or down.)
Charles the Simple made Rollo the first Duke of Normandy, which arguably started this entire thing.
This is another repost/renaming of the SAME documentary...sigh *watches it anyway*
Lol this is exactly what I just did
How could Dan touch those documents without gloves?
I wonder the same thing. Wouldn’t the oils from even clean hands damage these fragile, priceless documents?
The latest is that clean hands are okay with documents. But yeah, I tend to wince too
"It's only a model" :P
I suppose if he washed his hands very thoroughly just before hand it would be alright, because it would remove the harmful oils. Also keep in mind, it was likely only for the shot, behind the scenes, I imagine everything would have been handled with gloves.
Cleaned, washed, oil free hands are now considered superior to gloves in that gloves can interfere with the delicate touch of ungloved hands, which are more sensitive to pressure and therefore better able to take care.
Les nobles et les gens cultivés en Angleterre parlaient au Moyen-Age le Français ( le franco-normand ) , ici ils parlent le Français avec un accent anglais : vraiment comique !!!
Sounds to me like Henry should have been impeached for treason.
My favorite medieval warrior king is Prince Edward/ King Edward I long shanks.
This could of been goods. Bit i think it needed 2 more ads. There just wasnt enough of them
Pwatoo? What's that? The sound of a longbow firing?
Are these rated PG ie primary school friendly?
35:12 This sword looks like Narsil from The Lord of the Rings.
Why did we live this way... oh yeah! 👁
Henry II Plantagenet wants the land his father lost in French. Henry II already lost two wars, with a single motivation to retake France. All it ended with an expensive defeat. The Barons lost confidence at the King so they cut off the money supply which they can.
Henry is a total dreamer. He can talk the talk but he cannot prove it. Simon De Monficier a minor French Knight with huge ambitious. He's a fanatic and he backs his belief with action. He spent his youth chasing heretics around France with a sword. Henry sees a mascular, single-mindedness that he needs to achieve his dreams
My family name is Lusignan...😱🤣😱
I was under the impression that Magna Carta was ignored and nullified by the Pope nearly immediately. I guess I'm not getting why it mattered in this case....
Watch it most f the day
Watch it most of the day
Better than Game of Thrones!
Except real people died back then. At least in game of thrones, it’s fictional characters, even if it’s based on real life people.
Is there any information on Henry VIII wife Katherine Howard? I know less about her than all of his wives.
Thank you.
Well, there's lots of _misleading_ info, lol, but I'd recommend the yt channel The Anne Boleyn Files. Gareth Russell's bio of Katherine, Young & Damned & Fair, is one of the best history books I've ever read, & there's a great interview with him about it on the Royal History Geeks channel.

Thank you ever so much.
I will be purchasing that book today.
@@barbaralamson7450 Cool!! I'm always recommending it cos like most people, I was only aware of the one-dimensional narratives she gets shoved into- tart, idiot, pawn of her family, abused child- & actually _none_ of them fit. She was far more interesting than that & I like for people to know what the records _actually_ say about her- there aren't heaps, but enough to get some sense of her as a real person. Enjoy!!
@@beth7935
The book will be here Saturday. I am very excited, not just as an avid reader but a history fan as well.
Thank you again 😊.
The UA-cam channel Reading The Past has done at least one and possibly 2 extremely excellent videos on Katherine Howard. I highly recommend Dr Kat in general, but you also got a recommendation for the Boelyn Files, so you're in good hands. :)
Why is this not allowed to be shown in the England?
French speaking royal family ruling England . England was first French colony
And Viking. Remember the Normans were Vikings that basically got bought off with land to stop pillaging. :) Then they intermarried with the French (Francs?) on those lands and the rest is history.
Well, I agree that liberty was somewhat by accident but limiting the King further limited the power of government. I don't think I would call England or Great Britain a democracy. Democracy is one of the worst forms of government. At that time in history, you had a limited monarchy.
I like Dan Jones because the other narrators have such a monotonous tone of voice, it makes me sleepy.
Turned again his sibling?
What do you mean by siblings?
Brother or sister.
I’m actually a descendant of the Plantagenets.
Me too!
@@michaelhearne3289 so cool!!
Same, through three of my four grandparents.
@@michelleb7399 I’ve only checked one lineal descendant so far, so I may be related through more. I’ve just taken my paternal great grandmother & followed her line. What’s interesting is I’m American so the reason I was originally researching it was to find relatives who fought in the American Revolutionary War to join a lineal organization we have called the Daughters of the American Revolution. And after I found those relations I continued to follow them back & realized my ancestry went back to the founding of the Plymouth Colony with the Pilgrims in America. So considering my family turned out to be prominent in America, it detailed they ancestry before they came here. And thanks to some good books & genealogies, I’ve been able to trace as far back as King Edward I Longshanks. I also have ancestry through European Royal families through this branch as well, that I just haven’t fully researched yet.
My dad & I have been obsessed with British history & all things UK for most of our lives. We both been there a couple times & thoroughly enjoyed it. We joke now that it was just part of our DNA all along.
So are most of us. It’s not rare.
Lots of uk slang/modern parlance to get the point across, so much so, I feel rather patronised. Otherwise, this subject is the bomb.
I'd claim you'd have to be remarkably thin-skinned in order to feel insulted because of the dialect of a narrator in a documentary...
And some say one can trust all Brits!
No one says that.
Anyone subjected to their colonialism would disagree.
@@lovelessissimo - That's correct - NO ONE says that. Because it's just NEVER been true.
@@alanhardman2447 right. Ask the Polish pilots who saved the country during the Battle of Britain. Well, you can't ask them because the Brits forcibly repatriated them to "poland" which was at that time the Soviet Union. Stalin deemed them to be enemies because the Soviets and Nazis were allies during the Battle of Britain.
You can guess what happened to them once they were in Russian hands.
And Britain never apologized.
@Barry Iaconelli I don't think we are talking about the same thing.
Why is there so much shouting and screaming?
Hey man, chill…I thought we were buds?! I’ll pay you back, I swear.
Is tyranised even a word?
Yes it is
I don’t understand how a dude who had legit like no money and power is given money and power and then wants to be all greedy and take out a loan putti g his buddy as the cosigner and didn’t ask for if it’s all right. It’s too much.
It's good to be the king? Or something.....
A wonderful religious zealot that makes the kings sister break her vow of chastity and marry him in secret
I’m not a big fan of these dramatic re-creations, especially with the gore. If I wanted to see that (and was stupid), I’d watch “Game of Thrones” to get my ‘history’ lesson, instead.
