- SUBSCRIBE FOR UPDATES! The Predator 212cc hemi is a great engine, but if you're planning on customizing and tuning it for automotive applications there are a few annoying incompatibilities you need to plan for. Here is what you need to know before grabbing a Harbor Freight 212cc hemi.
Parts shown:
Flywheel - Kohler 1702530S
Stator - Kohler 1708509S
(Not shown, optional) Fan - Kohler 1715706S
Starter / Switch Box - Generic Honda GX160/GX200 compatible -- compatible with both hemi and non-hemi
Where's the video of the rest of the install.
Stator is round. Those are "charging coils". If you use either the flywheel must having internal magnets....
Didn't know that -- thanks!
Dude thank you for this. I just found this flywheel new on eBay for 50.00
This flywheel doesn't match the key way from the stock flywheel. It's clocked in a different location. What did you do to solve this issue
This is why you don't buy a predator 212 but buy a Tillotson 212 instead because they have a electric start version available and it's 3.5 horsepower higher than a predator 212 and the tillotson stock flywheel can handle higher RPM's tillotson 212 is 10 horsepower vs predator 212 of 6.5 horsepower.
I'm always tempted by them, but I have a a lot of existing $100 Predators, like experimenting and a HF just down the street ;)
I have a tillotson 212 and you can't buy a 3 magnet flywheel for it to charge a battery and a headlight. Gopowersports said, we can't get the flywheels! So I found out through a buddy that builds race engines that tillotson is a Honda clone, so I'll be buying a 3 magnet flywheel for a clone motor to get what I need. The tillotson hemi doesn't turn enough RPM'S to scatter the flywheel anyways.
The hemi and the non hemi are two completely different manufacturers. Thus minor design differences.
Any hints as to who makes the subcomponents and how we can track down more comparable parts like this flywheel?
I will find the flywheel I need what not, and the charging coils but how do I hook it up in a way where I can have a headlight and a rear break light
Hmm,Fascinating -- What kinda of model KOHLER ENGINE would that Flywheel come OFF of????? - I have an old Kohler k-181 8hp!!
Honestly I have no idea .. they seem to be pretty good answering compatibility questions though. (They should be for the price!)
CH-270 Kohler?
Ive seen where this will also work for the 301cc Pred engine too. Dont know why there arent more videos showing this.
The 212cc is the most popular.
@@dr.leespoorlifechoices1701 I understand that, but if you are doing a swap for a snow blower, with a long 1" shaft, the 301 will save you from having to buy a sleeve to increase the diameter of the 3/4' 212 shaft, with the addition of washers to increase the shaft length. Plus you will gain more HP.
I got Honda gx200 and bought the starter kit , looks just like the one you showing , do you gave wiring diagram how to wire all the wires coming out of the switch box ?
No.. and I wouldn't trust the color coding. Typically there is a wire with two bullet connectors that goes to the on/off switch and the low oil sensor. Others are for the battery, stator/charging coil, and starter.. I'm probably forgetting something. Others have videos though.
Hi I need help I want electric start on my 168f diesel will this work
Hey i was wondering if a neodymium magnet would help magnetize the stock flywheel so you just install the stater assembly
For the ignition coil? The flywheel already has that built in and the timing is only adjustable via an offset key on the shaft. Sorry I'm not sure I understand the question but this is the only way I know how on the flywheel side.
@@dr.leespoorlifechoices1701 JB welding small neodymium magnets on the inside of the wheel
@@squishy_Rio The stock flywheel will work fine as-is. I only replace it so the starter motor gears have something to connect to. If you don't want electric start, you can just install the stator assembly.
I thought you couldnt run the electric start on the Hemi Pred ?????
Sure you can.. Just need the right flywheel. I do it on all the hemis.
Why do you need electric starter on a 212cc engine?
because that's how i roll
Is there a way to get electric start for a billet flywheel
You mean get a billet flywheel for an electric start dont you?
@@ChristopherJones16 yes. I want to try and find a way to get a billet flywheel for electric start but I know that the original charging coil wont work with it
Is there a benefit to getting the fan?
Kind of. The white plastic fan doesn't fit perfectly on the new flywheel; if I recall correctly you need to trim a little material to get a decent fit. It would be reassuring if it fit perfectly, but it doesn't. An aluminum flywheel fan would certainly dissipate heat better, too.
The issue people usually bring up is if the plastic fan can hold up at higher RPMs. I've never had any issue with these exploding at WOT, but it seems plausible that the plastic could sheer.
3 amps at idle or max speed?
That's with some throttle but if you're going through a voltage regulator you'll still get about 11.4 volts and can still charge a battery while using lights.
@Dr. Lee’s poor life choices, you mentioned you use dual stators or charging coils, I’ve seen videos where one connects to the ignition switch box. Where does the second connect to? Also, what does the coil connected to the ignition box do?
I do use a dual stator setup, because I tend to run small LED light bars as "running lights" for safety. The stator connects directly to an input wire on the ignition switch box, correct. Inside the switch box, there is usually just the single (and very poorly soldered) multi-position switch that connects it to the battery when running. The coils come already wired together, so electrically it's identical to running only a single coil.
...Also note that the voltage regulator is inside the switch box and pre-wired internally for you.
Thanks for the response! So being connected the ignition switch box, that multi position switch will charge the battery? My goal that I’m trying to achieve with the electric start setup is to also be charging my battery to operate small LED lights and a few accessories.
I have searched the Internet for some time trying to find dual stators that is wired together with one connector on the end. Most I find have two connectors. Do you have any recommendations to what coils to use?
@@coryjackson5644 In the video notes I put the Kohler part number I used, but I've bought eBay parts that came that way, too. If they came as basically two separate coils, I would *think* you would just wire them together in parallel at the same switch box input wire since they will be 180 degrees out of phase and the regulator should take care of phase rectification. That's the only thing that makes sense to me, at least.
Is this a direct bolt on
For the most part yes, except that the safety shroud covering the entire assembly needs a cutout for where the starter protrudes. Other than that it’s bolt-on.
I bought this electric starter kit for my predator 212 (hemi) and the flywheel does not fit my crank. What should I do? Any help would be great.
If the flywheel doesn’t fit the shaft, it sounds like whatever kit you have is for the non-hemi Predator. The starters are the same but the shaft taper is different.
@@dr.leespoorlifechoices1701 I just spent 4 hours lapping that damn crank shaft but it turned out 👌.
That’s crazy!! Glad you got it figured out though.
@@dr.leespoorlifechoices1701 yeah, I had lapping compound and the wrong starter kit...I made it work lol. Thanks buddy.
why didn’t you just swap the Ring Gear off the Honda flywheel onto your stock hemi flywheel?????
Where did you get the flywheel, and dose it work on the new predator?
I usually just find the best price off eBay for the exact, genuine part number. I really wish there were a knock off version, as the Kohler is insanely overpriced. However.. the answer is YES!!! It works fantastic and I've never had an issue with these. I use dual stators in all my builds and have never had an issue with any stators I've tried, Kohler or otherwise.
What is the part number?
Flywheel: Kohler 1702530S
(Optional) Flywheel Fan: Kohler 1715706S
Stator: Kohler 1708509S (doesn't have to be Kohler brand -- generics work fine)
Alsome thanks
@@dr.leespoorlifechoices1701 is the stator the charging coils?
Is the timing right with this Kohler flywheel when you bolt it on the Hemi Predator 212? or do you have to do timing adjustments?
Timing is the same as the stock flywheel. I've never had any timing issues.

This a great info. I'm looking into fabing up an electric start/stator on my Ariens Predator 212 repower and this answered alot of questions I have. Check out some of my vids those Predator rock!!
Very nice! Yeah these things can be used for anything :)
