The salt when NL doesn't get Brimstone or Mom Knife is real.
Here's how I see Lazarus, and why I believe activating his passive in the way done in this video was actually a bad play. For this, I'm going to compare him to another character, Judas:
- Lazarus starts with a 1.00 damage modifier, going up to a 1.20 modifier when his passive is activated. Judas, however, starts with a 1.35 damage modifier.
- Lazarus starts with 3 Heart Containers, whereas Judas starts with 1. However, when Lazarus's passive is activated his health becomes 1.
- Lazarus starts with 17.75 Range, whereas Judas starts with 23.75.
- In all other stat aspects Lazarus and Judas are the same.
- In terms of consumables, Judas starts with 3 pennies, whereas Lazarus starts with a single pill.
- Lastly, in terms of items, Judas starts with The Book of Belial, whereas Lazarus starts with a passive version of Lazarus' Rags.
- When Lazarus's passive is activated, he gains a 1.20 damage modifier, +0.25 speed, +6 range and the Anemic item effect.
So when Lazarus's passive goes off, he basically becomes a faster version of Judas which does less damage, and instead of The Book of Belial he has Anemic. Overall this is worse, as although The Book of Belial is a spacebar item it guarantees Devil/Angel Rooms on a floor, and Anemic is only useful when hit.
The point is, rushing to get into Lazarus's passive state is trading two heart containers to become a (much) worse version of Judas. Not a good trade. As people have mentioned already, get into the passive state from Devil Room trades.
You should ultimately value damage over HP. It's a lot tougher to win the game with low hp and high damage than high hp and low damage. So, with that in mind, it's generally a good idea to just take the death as Lazarus as early as possible while staying safe. As you saw in this very video, you won't always get 3 hearts worth of deal with the devil.

Remeber when he teleported to the deal With the devil from The curse room. Ok good now you saw the devil statue well that means that he was in the deal with the devil.

Respawning as Lazarus gives you a range upgrade and a small speed upgrade as well as damage multiplayer and luck.

There should really be some HP downgrade items that can take away red HP even if you have spirit hearts. I know that's a mechanic they don't have on purpose, but there should be items like tear or damage upgrades that take health away, instead of giving it. I normally don't want my red health, especially in the late game, so being able to get a devil-like-item on the chest would be fantastic. I've thought about this a lot.

Has anyone uploaded the version of Infanticide/Isaac's boss theme in the second phase? It sounds alot better with that angelic choir.
NL, you do realize that all the stuff you've used extra lives for in the past (deals with the devil, suicide king, self-sacrifice, demon beggars, blood banks, etc.) all work with Lazarus' ability right? You're starting with the ability to do one of those and get a stat boost in the process.

You would not believe the run I had today! First item room contained book of revelations. So I thought "Oh if I keep this till the end, I'll get the Meat Boy Achievement." Get to the Womb, with a 3rd level meat boy, and got killed. You know why I died? CURSED EYE!!! It screwed with my damage, and; combined with the fact that I had Curse of the Unknown, It left me in a state where I couldn't do consistent damage, and couldn't know what damage I had taken. So If you want any BoIR advice, DON'T TAKE CURSED EYE!!!!!
Cursed Eye is great if you have good tears or you can judge when it's safe. It only teleports you while charging (when the eye's flashing). If you have a twitchy trigger finger it will fuck you over hard though.
I'll be the first to admit I have a twitchy trigger finger, so that may have been the problem, but that curse of the unknown still sucked.
Joosterandom Not true, it only teleports you when your eye is a solid black color (the first second of charging). When it's blinking you will not teleport. platinumgod.co.uk/
I had that be my first item once too. The womb boss contained none other than mr. Fred and my dreams were crushed. It was the most unfair thing ever. I blame having map and compass for generating a big boss room before I could use the book.
Aww NL, at 2:00, that bad deal with the devil. I mean, this is before I worked out the statistical probability of getting a good item after taking a crap devil room item or not and posted it to Reddit and you have such a massive backlog - But I am looking forward to you knowing the maths.
Last time I got no a no damage + no tears upgrades run that I won, I stopped playing for two months. My patience was so spread thin that I didn't find the game worth playing for quite some time.
What does he use as a controller? A joystick or a keyboard?
Hey! Know you're a busy guy BUTTTT.. If and when you get a chance, you should try to play 'Don't Starve' it's basically a survival game in which you scavenge for food, try to survive the night, make/ build items and machines to escape and most importantly TRY NOT TO STARVE. I won't give any spoilers, but just make sure you're prepared for the night, and winter! c: hope you have a wonderful evening/ day

Can someone help me? When I start rebirth, and when it says preparing the binding of isaac rebirth, it just closes itself. I've already deleted and re-installed local game files, but it didn't work.

Taking money from bum firend when he needs spirit hearts at the end. Kind of leads to the obvious point here I was going to say.
It's super obvious that NL's not into Isaac after doing like 40 episodes all at once ahead of time for vacation. One day binge burnout. Poor attitude from some bad runs damage the rest and lead to rushed and bad decisions/dodging. I'm hopeful the batch ones are done soon, it is a different person after he recorded so many in a row.
Don't misunderstand, I appreciate that he cares to do this to himself to make sure there is content. Just the mentality shift from the start and end of this batch is obvious (and understandable) :o

You unlock the dark room(lamb) after killing satan either 4 or 6 times(i forgot), unlock the chest by killing isaac again, either 4 or 6 times, unlock the cathedral by killing mom's heart 11 times, unlock mega satan by beating the chest once(also unlocks angels), unlock the d6 for isaac by killing isaac with ???, unlock ??? by killing mom's heart 9 times. There, enough shit?

Hey guys, I've noticed that some enemies don't produce an animation and just shoot. The walking host do it to me sometimes, so they dont pop up. Is it a glitch?
i believe pink champion versions of mobs can shoot, that is probably the reason those walking turrets shoot without popping up, it's because those are the shots caused by the champion effect.
Gatts2112 I've seen the walking host shoot their tri shot without popping up and they weren't champions
not sure what causes that. i'm guessing some interaction with slow or most likely charm.
that has definitely happened to me, and i've seen it in videos. i assume it's a glitch. i've only seen it with hosts.
