Dude went 1 km into the city, missed all of the large spas/waterparks, skipped seeing the university and its surroundings, didn't go into any of the museums or parks and then called the city depressing. Great stuff
As a Debrecen local, i never found it depressing. It has some communist leftover grey houses, sure, but it also has the best schooling system you'll find around central/east/south Europe, has some great sights, and is Hungarian, therefore good food with good people. 10/10, would be born and grow up here again.
Debrecen is not so depressing, I love being a student here. I want to move when I finish my degree, but this place is quite peaceful and underrated. Also, by territory it's the 3rd biggest in the country, not the second.

Hops on a random train, gets to a random location, and then starts wondering what to do there. How about looking up the tourist sites first? I have lived in Debrecen for nearly a decade now. It is certainly not the most interesting European city, but calling it depressing is a bit over the top. Calling it the most depressing city in Europe is ludicrous. The main square with the Great Church (right next to the white church you called Big Ben) is actually quite nice. We have festivals in the Summer, with concerts and street fairs for weeks. The city has a rich history and a large museum if you're into that stuff. The main university campus with lakes and forests surrounding it is also a good place to spend an afternoon. But sure, sit in a random pub, because that will tell you a lot about a city.

The catbis OK, many animal rescue groups are keeping an eye on them, no issues.
Bro went to the 2nd largest city in Hungary, skipped out all the aquaparks, attractions, architecture, went to the post-soviet part of the city, recorded 2 buildings and called it depressing
I found Gorizia, Italy incredibly depressing. The sky is mostly grey and the energy is just so so sad. Near the city there are natural openings in the terrain where people (men and women, possibly children too) were thrown in alive and left to die after WW2, they were accused of being Italian, therefore fascist...they weren't, the real fascists were hiding. In that part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia there is also the only concentration camp in Italy and it's the worst, saddest place I have been in. Some cells are only 1m wide and dark, the museum contains documents and diaries that are easy to read made by prisoners, along with some striped pajamas from Auschwitz.

To be honest it isn't far from rality. Hungary is full of alcoholists who cannot even for a coherent sentence anymore. The buildings are in bad condition because the government steals the money what was for to upgrade the country
It's great to have the timers so you know how much time you need to wait for the green lights, but the fact that they usually start counting back from 99, even on a remote street is killing me. Also the lack of green waves is annoying.
As an American I find it interesting that you can fly in Europe an 1.5 and be in completely different country. In the U.S. you can take an 1.5 flight and are still the same state. Wow
I love it. My wife is from there and i look forward to visiting Debrecen. I love the small town feel and how peaceful it is. It’s a far cry from our old place in south Florida and our current home in London. If it wasn’t so cold in the winter id retire here
