Thanks so much! I really like seeing narrow gauge locos on various railroads around the world with details like that, thought it'd make a nice touch! British, African railways for the buffer beam labels, and Java railways for both the number plates and headboards. And Cora, she's the first and favorite Railway Series narrow gauge character and van I ever tried, and I'm very happy with how she turned out.
Sudrian Railway Modeler Ah! I thought the chimney numbers came off the Isle of Man locos! Cora looks great, and I think she's a really undervalued character. Actually, I think that applies to most of the coach characters.
Sudrian Railway Modeler So do the standard gauge ones too! For instance, the Mk. Is feeling superficial towards the older ex-SR maunsells, while the four-wheelers are mostly seen as novelties.
I don't know why, but that part at 0:50 just does it for me when you can hear Rusty's exhaust. That little tiny sound makes everything seem so much more realistic. And the following shot with Duncan, my god. I love RWS Duncan especially in terms of his design and I love how instead of angry, he looks like he thinks he's invincible. Anyway, keep up the great work and I'd love to see more of this from you in the future.
Absolutely incredible work! As always, the model work is fantastic, but what I haven't seen before, at least in conjunction with your own models, is the eye movements. They are the best and most realistic I have ever seen. That extra layer of shine you put over the animation on the eyes makes it so convincing, as the lighting is the same no matter where they move. That little gleam is what makes it. It really does look like the engines have eye mechanisms. And the narrow gauge engines in the show never moved their eyes while they were in steam, either, so you never risk not meeting the show's level! I also love how you included eyebrow movements, it definitely adds personality, I especially enjoyed seeing it with Duncan! I loved the -slow- steep bends and ravine ahead sign, too, I just love how you combine TVS and RWS elements, taking the best of both worlds. These models, those eye animations, and everything else is just incredible, excellent work!
Thanks so much! I love putting RWS and TV Series content when I can. It makes it special and unique for me, from the scenes to the way the narrow gauge rolling stock looks. On the animation, I love giving these faces life using painting and keyframing with Adobe Software. Learned a lot from art college and my art career that I applied to this nostalgia piece, and I'm really happy the way it turned out :D
That is true :D That's given me the opportunity to develop my method of making eye-catching facial animation, and I did a little bit of it here. It's definitely an expressive style all it's own, and for this I wanted it to be a little more subtle or just focus on the eyes, in truely classic TV series style.
I have seen a great deal of it, but this is the first place it really caught my eye. I think it's because it's combined with such high quality models here, the combination is just so much better here.

As a Thomas Fan, The work David Mitton & his modelmaking team created has such craftsmanship, it inspired me to teach myself about fine-scale modelmaking, and reach for high standards in quality & detail. So with the progress I've made the past year, it felt to be the right time to showcase these newest models running free on these specially made dioramas with what I currently have. It's taught me to make the most of common, everyday objects and materials to create something believable, and the way it's presented makes a difference.
Stephen.....just wow. What can I say? I am absolutely amazed by this. As someone who loves S5 and considers it one of the finest examples of TV/Film, I believe that this brilliantly captures the charm of it and still brings something new to the table without it feeling jarring. Seeing Rusty's black livery in a beautiful S5 style model is so cool to me. I adore how the scenery and sets were done. The amount of weathering and detail is why this looks so great and reminds me so much of S5. The weathering in this is better than everything S6 onwards in my opinion. One of the reasons David Mitton's work was so great was that he managed to make Sodor and even the Tugs universe feel real at times. I don't think I've ever seen a fan video make Sodor look this real. If the show had started looking like this after S5 instead of going in the less realistic direction it did, I'd be a ok with it! This perfectly captures what Thomas is all about to me! Just seeing the visuals of the Skarloey Railway in this and thinking about them, makes me think about what exciting and heart warming stories these characters could have. This deserves to be shown at some sort of Film event or debuted at a Thomas Convention (if it existed, maybe we'll have ThomCon someday, haha). I'll definitely be taking so much inspiration from this for my secret Thomas project I'm working on. The music was amazing too. Anyways, thanks for making such incredible content dude! The Thomas Community just got another video to inspire users in the future, much like Mad Bomber and Thomas Blows His Stack inspired many of us back in the day. Amazing work. :)

Hmmm, on one hand the sets, models, music and cinematography give me Series 4-7 vibes, on the the other I'm also reminded of educational films from the 60's (Railway with a Heart of Gold, anyone?) and 50's orchestral music! It's been awhile I haven't watched such a high quality video like this one. Its simple: I can't see any flaws in it! I personally love how you've taken into consideration every details without exception, whether it's the scenery, the weathering, the engines and all the "bits and pieces" you can find around a railway, all of this make your work unique. Even the animation is realistic! I've never seen such an amazing animation that fits perfectly with real models and definitely bring life to them. Also, kudos to Isaiah for the beautiful soundtrack! I hope this video will get all the attention it deserves, because it is truly a piece of art.

This is something to behold! Absolutely astounding, wonderful visuals, set design models and soundscape. The sets carry the charm and detail that the classic series mastered. The models though, bloody hell the models! I'm a huge fan of the Talyllyn and as such, the Skarloey, so to see these fully detailed & accurate 16mm models working is a huge treat! The eye movements, steam and wonderful soundtrack by Isaiah really brought the whole thing to life! Grand job Stephen, really looking forward to what you have to offer next! Thanks so much! :D SO yes, the Talyllyn has always been one of my favorite of the Welsh narrow gauge railways for obvious reasons. Looking at real-life reference from books and photography has taught me a lot through observation in teaching myself how to make these models. I love the narrow gauge engine in the Thomas & Friends stories so much, I felt committed to making a project especially for them to run freely on these dioramas to film. It was so much fun to make, and an awesome collab with my good friend Isaiah. He really brought the visuals to life with the music.

Brilliant stuff, brings back good memories of watching the series when it first aired on PBS, plus the many specials and vhs tapes. The models and the practical effects always had a certain charm to me, especially when they'd go to the trouble of showing closeup shots of things like Toby's water tank glass and using real water in it, or a set of lamps and cutouts to make a glowing firebed for a firebox, etc This does a grand job of recreating the ambiance of the old show, right down to the animated facial expressions on the engines and the steam effects. Thank you for putting in all the time and effort to share this with everyone, my modeller's hat is off to you.
Ah man thank you! That's exactly what I was going for. Modeling has always been my favorite stage of the process behind making projects like this, and bringing the sets to life with my scratch-built structures and scenics is just the cherry on the cake for me :) I wanted to include elements that Thomas fans love, and that was fun! A very satisfying and gorgeous proper moving look at what you've been up to is a sight to behold! I loved the SFX timing with some of the tricks and movements you pulled off in this here video and I loved the shots of the slate quarry area (or the sidings at CGW but I couldn't tell) with the engines moving about. That really means a lot to me. This nostalgic piece is a response to the way the experience of watching the Thomas & Friends stories impacted me as a child. It inspired me to teach myself model-making as a hobby, which in my education in the arts served as a basis for learning crafting models in animation production. Thomas & Friends will always be remembered for the craftsmanship of their gorgeous models, and the quality of visual storytelling for children of all ages. It's a hobby that's taken a lot of practice to produce, but I really enjoy it! I love combining elements from various seasons, like giving the engines and rolling stock elements from the Railway Series like their liveries, the style of how the models looked from Season 5 of the TV show, and the sets I enjoyed seeing in Season 4. Well well well. This presentation truly blew my mind. The models look so lifelike and the sets look so small yet decorative. Didn't you say a while back you used LEGO track for the engines? Well it is hard to tell mainly because of how well you used the ballest and foliage to make them blend in so well. The smaller details like the moving faces, steam effects and original Skarloey Railway logo (kudos to Loey Machan) really added to the presentation value and brought the stellar models to life. I really appreciate it, thank you! Yeah, Legos were how I started. It's made it quite easy to modify and customize. It's such an amazing thing making these models in this size and filming them on my dioramas. David Mitton and his modeling team captured a unique sense of atmosphere for railways and the Rev. W. Awdry book illustrations that has always been SO nostalgic for me, and it taught me how to model by observation and inspired me to grow in my creativity as an artist. Loey Machan did such a nice job on his design, and credited for the concept I was inspired to give life to. That and the effects applied really set the mood and time these engines operate. The magic is in the storytelling as much as the effects. I really appreciate your words of encouragement and your support, thanks again mate! :D

Thanks so much! I really like seeing narrow gauge locos on various railroads around the world with details like that, thought it'd make a nice touch! British, African railways for the buffer beam labels, and Java railways for both the number plates and headboards.
And Cora, she's the first and favorite Railway Series narrow gauge character and van I ever tried, and I'm very happy with how she turned out.

Cora looks great, and I think she's a really undervalued character. Actually, I think that applies to most of the coach characters.
That's very true! I've seen those charming locos with those! Cora and the other SR coaches have a lot of untapped potential.
Sudrian Railway Modeler So do the standard gauge ones too! For instance, the Mk. Is feeling superficial towards the older ex-SR maunsells, while the four-wheelers are mostly seen as novelties.

I don't know why, but that part at 0:50 just does it for me when you can hear Rusty's exhaust. That little tiny sound makes everything seem so much more realistic. And the following shot with Duncan, my god. I love RWS Duncan especially in terms of his design and I love how instead of angry, he looks like he thinks he's invincible. Anyway, keep up the great work and I'd love to see more of this from you in the future.
Absolutely incredible work! As always, the model work is fantastic, but what I haven't seen before, at least in conjunction with your own models, is the eye movements. They are the best and most realistic I have ever seen. That extra layer of shine you put over the animation on the eyes makes it so convincing, as the lighting is the same no matter where they move. That little gleam is what makes it. It really does look like the engines have eye mechanisms. And the narrow gauge engines in the show never moved their eyes while they were in steam, either, so you never risk not meeting the show's level! I also love how you included eyebrow movements, it definitely adds personality, I especially enjoyed seeing it with Duncan! I loved the -slow- steep bends and ravine ahead sign, too, I just love how you combine TVS and RWS elements, taking the best of both worlds. These models, those eye animations, and everything else is just incredible, excellent work!

On the animation, I love giving these faces life using painting and keyframing with Adobe Software. Learned a lot from art college and my art career that I applied to this nostalgia piece, and I'm really happy the way it turned out :D

That is true :D That's given me the opportunity to develop my method of making eye-catching facial animation, and I did a little bit of it here. It's definitely an expressive style all it's own, and for this I wanted it to be a little more subtle or just focus on the eyes, in truely classic TV series style.

Thanks so much! Those definitely provide me a good base to start with creating dioramas of scenes unique to the RWS and pulling together elements from both the TVS/RWS. As I want to create visuals that are fresh and different to what Thomas fans would be used to seeing, it makes it both a challenge and a lot more fun!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. As a Thomas Fan, The work David Mitton & his modelmaking team created has such craftsmanship, it inspired me to teach myself about fine-scale modelmaking, and reach for high standards in quality & detail.
So with the progress I've made the past year, it felt to be the right time to showcase these newest models running free on these specially made dioramas with what I currently have. It's taught me to make the most of common, everyday objects and materials to create something believable, and the way it's presented makes a difference.
Stephen.....just wow. What can I say? I am absolutely amazed by this. As someone who loves S5 and considers it one of the finest examples of TV/Film, I believe that this brilliantly captures the charm of it and still brings something new to the table without it feeling jarring. Seeing Rusty's black livery in a beautiful S5 style model is so cool to me. I adore how the scenery and sets were done. The amount of weathering and detail is why this looks so great and reminds me so much of S5. The weathering in this is better than everything S6 onwards in my opinion. One of the reasons David Mitton's work was so great was that he managed to make Sodor and even the Tugs universe feel real at times. I don't think I've ever seen a fan video make Sodor look this real. If the show had started looking like this after S5 instead of going in the less realistic direction it did, I'd be a ok with it! This perfectly captures what Thomas is all about to me! Just seeing the visuals of the Skarloey Railway in this and thinking about them, makes me think about what exciting and heart warming stories these characters could have. This deserves to be shown at some sort of Film event or debuted at a Thomas Convention (if it existed, maybe we'll have ThomCon someday, haha). I'll definitely be taking so much inspiration from this for my secret Thomas project I'm working on. The music was amazing too. Anyways, thanks for making such incredible content dude! The Thomas Community just got another video to inspire users in the future, much like Mad Bomber and Thomas Blows His Stack inspired many of us back in the day. Amazing work. :)

Hmmm, on one hand the sets, models, music and cinematography give me Series 4-7 vibes, on the the other I'm also reminded of educational films from the 60's (Railway with a Heart of Gold, anyone?) and 50's orchestral music! Whatever you make of it; your dedication to modeling and passion for these characters really shows and I can't wait to see what else you have in store!

That's really kind of you. I really appreciate it. Thomas & Friends have been a long-standing inspiration as a person growing up and as an artist. I felt inspired to create models with similar quality, but the passion I call a hobby for the past 10 years have really been a fulfilling experience.
It's a sure call-back to the early years of the Thomas & Friends show, and the visual storytelling captivated me so deeply, it played an influence to tap into my creative self to make art for children. I'm happy it's proven valuable in my art education, and this hobby in my spare time has given me the opportunity to connect with Thomas fans on a global scale.

It's been awhile I haven't watched such a high quality video like this one. Its simple: I can't see any flaws in it!
I personally love how you've taken into consideration every details without exception, whether it's the scenery, the weathering, the engines and all the "bits and pieces" you can find around a railway, all of this make your work unique. Even the animation is realistic! I've never seen such an amazing animation that fits perfectly with real models and definitely bring life to them.
Also, kudos to Isaiah for the beautiful soundtrack!
I hope this video will get all the attention it deserves, because it is truly a piece of art.

This is something to behold! Absolutely astounding, wonderful visuals, set design models and soundscape. The sets carry the charm and detail that the classic series mastered. The models though, bloody hell the models! I'm a huge fan of the Talyllyn and as such, the Skarloey, so to see these fully detailed & accurate 16mm models working is a huge treat! The eye movements, steam and wonderful soundtrack by Isaiah really brought the whole thing to life! Grand job Stephen, really looking forward to what you have to offer next!

Thanks so much! :D SO yes, the Talyllyn has always been one of my favorite of the Welsh narrow gauge railways for obvious reasons. Looking at real-life reference from books and photography has taught me a lot through observation in teaching myself how to make these models. I love the narrow gauge engine in the Thomas & Friends stories so much, I felt committed to making a project especially for them to run freely on these dioramas to film.
It was so much fun to make, and an awesome collab with my good friend Isaiah. He really brought the visuals to life with the music.

Brilliant stuff, brings back good memories of watching the series when it first aired on PBS, plus the many specials and vhs tapes.
The models and the practical effects always had a certain charm to me, especially when they'd go to the trouble of showing closeup shots of things like Toby's water tank glass and using real water in it, or a set of lamps and cutouts to make a glowing firebed for a firebox, etc
This does a grand job of recreating the ambiance of the old show, right down to the animated facial expressions on the engines and the steam effects.

Ah man thank you! That's exactly what I was going for. Modeling has always been my favorite stage of the process behind making projects like this, and bringing the sets to life with my scratch-built structures and scenics is just the cherry on the cake for me :) I wanted to include elements that Thomas fans love, and that was fun!

A very satisfying and gorgeous proper moving look at what you've been up to is a sight to behold! That really means a lot to me. This nostalgic piece is a response to the way the experience of watching the Thomas & Friends stories impacted me as a child. It inspired me to teach myself model-making as a hobby, which in my education in the arts served as a basis for learning crafting models in animation production. Thomas & Friends will always be remembered for the craftsmanship of their gorgeous models, and the quality of visual storytelling for children of all ages.
It's a hobby that's taken a lot of practice to produce, but I really enjoy it! I love combining elements from various seasons, like giving the engines and rolling stock elements from the Railway Series like their liveries, the style of how the models looked from Season 5 of the TV show, and the sets I enjoyed seeing in Season 4.

When I watched the Oliver and Diesel scene, I felt like I was watching a Classic Series model episode, but made in 2017! My friend, if I had the ability, I’d start a poll, and petition, to get HiT to sell the rights... TO YOU! Because I’m just so in love with your content! And I’m aching to see more of it! You have a talent, and I feel the whole world should see it!
Well well well. This presentation truly blew my mind. The models look so lifelike and the sets look so small yet decorative. Didn't you say a while back you used LEGO track for the engines? Well it is hard to tell mainly because of how well you used the ballest and foliage to make them blend in so well.
The smaller details like the moving faces, steam effects and original Skarloey Railway logo (kudos to Loey Machan) really added to the presentation value and brought the stellar models to life.
The dedication to your hobby really shows. You really are an inspiration in this community. Excellent job and keep up the great work.

I really appreciate it, thank you! Yeah, Legos were how I started. It's made it quite easy to modify and customize. It's such an amazing thing making these models in this size and filming them on my dioramas. David Mitton and his modeling team captured a unique sense of atmosphere for railways and the Rev. W. Awdry book illustrations that has always been SO nostalgic for me, and it taught me how to model by observation and inspired me to grow in my creativity as an artist.
Loey Machan did such a nice job on his design, and credited for the concept I was inspired to give life to. That and the effects applied really set the mood and time these engines operate. The magic is in the storytelling as much as the effects.

This is exactly the kind of look I'm after in the future when I finally pull my large finger out and get cracking with my future series. Loving your larger scale detail, gritty realism and I don't know what you are doing for faces and eye movement but it looks more effective around the eyes than Crazytalk, please reveal if you are willing.

It was a joy creating something very close to my heart as a childhood fan of Thomas & Friends, and the music Isaiah @HKPorterBEDT made for it specially really captured the magic of this Sudrian Narrow Gauge railway. The Lego Power Functions System has made it really easy to do that now, and they run well. The wheels are custom loco wheels from Big Ben Bricks, which I paint and weather.
