  • Downstate Health Sciences University is located in the heart of the borough of Brooklyn, the largest of the five boroughs of New York City, with a population of almost 2.6 million. By population, Brooklyn is the eighth largest county and equivalent to the fourth largest city in the United States.
    The College of Medicine traces its origin back to 1860. The school revolutionized medical education in the United States by rejecting the practice of training physicians exclusively in university classrooms and bringing the teaching of medicine to the hospital bedside
    for the first time. In 1950 the school joined the State University of New York.
    Today, SUNY Downstate includes Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, and Schools of Health Professions, Graduate Studies, and Public Health, with a total student enrollment of over 1800 students. The College of Medicine has many distinguished alumni, and
    in 2017 ranked 11th nationally in the number of alumni who hold faculty positions in academic medical centers. Throughout its history, SUNY Downstate has contributed pioneering advances to medicine.
    Maur ice Se l by, MD, a member of the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine Class of 2014, was born in Queens, New York and raised all over New York City. A product of NYC Public Schools, prior to Downstate, Dr. Selby attended the City College of New York
    where he earned a BA in English Literature. While at Downstate, he earned numerous awards, including the Deans Outstanding Student Award, a Global Health Fellowship Scholarship, and induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Selby completed
    his Emergency Medicine Residency Program at SUNY Downstate in 2018 after serving as Chief Resident, and received the award for Outstanding Performance as a Resident from the Downstate Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Selby also served as the
    Kings County Hospital Delegate to the Committee of Interns and Residents, where he advocated for labor rights for resident physicians and for quality patient care. Today
    Dr. Selby works for Progressive Emergency Physicians and is currently credentialed and working clinically at St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage, Long Island and Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Center.
