Special thanks to PlayStation for providing me with an early access review code of The Last of Us 2 Remaster.
A complete run of the "No Return" roguelike mode in The Last of Us 2 Remastered on the PS5 using Joel. This run also achieves an S Rank on Moderate difficulty and features the Rat King as the final boss.
No Return is the Roguelike survival mode included with the The Last of Us 2 Remastered. It features randomised encounters in which you will face different foes and partake in a variety of different modes. Once you complete 5 encounters, you will then fight the boss at the end. If you die during any of the encounters you will fail the run. Play as characters such as Ellie, Dina, Tommy, Joel, Lev, Abby, Mel, Manny who each have their own strengths.

I despise how they take the dodge mechanic from Joel in Part I and this remaster. Having dodge makes the combat so much more engaging and skill based. Absolute terrible decision.
It’s only he and Tommy who can’t dodge, but they both get their own unique fully upgraded weapons instead so it’s just a compromise for that I think

@@mitetobozhilov7204 That wouldn't work since the they're two different gameplay systems. Fluidity and agile movement was in mind when coming up with the mechanics for 2, so there are a lot of variants for different things, it wouldn't translate 1-1 with the "stiff" animations of the original; they'd have to either do lots of editing and fill in the gaps or just make the whole thing from scratch.
And that's also why Abby's animations look a bit odd as is anyway, because as the other commenter points out, Joel is an older man.

Not lazy, they would have to rework all enemy animations since they are made to fit the dodging mechanic.
Plus adding Joel's block mechanic.

So this illustrates for me the difference between dodging (a character-specific ability) and going prone (an updated gameplay ability from PT1->PT2). Awesome!
How does this work? I hadn't seen this teq before. Does going prone give you more time to shoot, or just a better angle ton shoot?

I'm not a fan of Joel's animations to be quite honest, looks like the same ones used for Abby. But regardless, it's such a relief for us to play as Joel in this mode.

I think all of the characters unfortunately have the same animations as either Ellie/abby. I would’ve liked more unique animations depending on who you’re playing as, because it kinda feels lazy this way
It's so nice seeing someone with skill and that actually knows how to play The Last of Us. Most of the gameplay I've seen has been dumasses fumbling with the contols, constantly using melee when they want to reload.

If you play this, do you unlock points to spend stuff in the extras menu? Like concept arts, character skins, etc.?
I love no return. Much more content in it than I expected
Im just saddened that there wasnt a coop option for this game mode, missed opportunity imo, it also makes me miss multiplayer playing this game mode, hope one day it gets a standalone or added into the game
They should have really added coop. Would have made for much more replayability

@@lepersonnage371 because the gameplay of 2 is different, it doesn't make sense to want to introduce the mechanics of 2 when the gameplay changes completely, and if you want to know, in Part 1 he doesn't even dodge or lay down, it's the same gameplay as the original, and that was the only thing that I didn't like there because in other aspects they totally changed the game.

Or does every 8 Bit RPG character play the same since they share so many animations? Better example, in baldurs gate 3 the magic classes have like 5 different animations for different spell types they share with each other, yet every class plays completely different. Yeah, there’s really no end goal too. You get a camo for weapons when you complete all challenges but that’s about it. After that point it’s just leaderboards

I have a few questions, so is it co op?
Can you chose to play against humans only ore infected only or is it always both.
Does it look even better then before and how manny lost levels are they and what does that inlcude? Are those levels who ar now in the main storry or is that something who is nnot in the storry but accessible true a other way? Thanks
No co op.
Sometimes you have infected and humans, sometimes only one of it in all encounters.
If you don’t play on a potato Tv it does look better.
There a 3 lost levels, they don’t include any fighting or looting just some „new“ places with some developer commentary. They were and still aren’t in the Story of the game and only take like 5-20 minutes each, depending if you listen to all comments of the devs.

EDIT: I checked and she can, it’s just Tommy and Joel who can’t
newsflash: ALL game devs re-use animations ALL. THE. TIME. Any character who punches enemies will share takedown animations with each other. Even the TLoU Remake brought in some takedown & melee animations from TLoU2, adding to Joel's pre-existing anims. It's possible that some of Joel's unique stuff (for ex: the headbutt) might be in here.

@@SidPhoenix2211yes, devs re-use animation, but they are still consistent, but this? This is just laziness they could've got the animations from the previous game, not literally take an animation from the opposite gender, it doesn't even feel natural he is literally moving like a young woman

I will say that I’m bummed that they recycled Abby’s animations for Joel and Tommy. They could have imported Joel’s animations form Part I and this would have been preferable to the way in which he moves currently.
That being said, I’m still happy to be able to play as Joel and Tommy in the second game regardless. The fact that there is a game mode in which we can focus exclusively on the game’s masterful combat with high replay value is a positive. At least they come with their own starting load out, play style, and voice lines. Not a total loss, people. Just my two cents.
It's definitely a technical thing. There's no prone, jump and a lot of nuanced interaction animations in Part 1 so they'd either have to make a whole new set of animations for Joel or tween his existing ones from Part 1 with other characters from Part 2. Or, they could just use the existing fully-rigged skeleton and change the skin, which is what they opted to do. I think it's pretty sensible, wouldn't make sense to make new animations for small game mode in a remaster. If you look at the other characters, the smaller frame ones use Ellie's animation and the stockier characters use Abby's. I imagine there's a feature set that is incomplete in NPC skeletons since they don't need to interact with objects the same way the player character does.
Yeah, overall because the combat was the real selling point of Part 2 since the story fell flat on its ass ofc. It works. Now, what it could really use is some co-op play!
@@dominicsawicki6943 It makes sense. Plus, people seem to forget that Abby’s brawler fighting style is based off of Joel’s. They originally developed Abby to fight the way she does in Part II because of Joel. In a way, it still very much feels the way Joel would fight because, well, he’s also a brute lmao.
I don’t mind using Abby’s fighting animations, but I still would’ve not used her running animation at least. They could’ve just ported over Joel’s run from the remake, I’m sure. Even so, it’s still not as big an issue as people are making it out to be. I’ve already sunk quite a bit into this game mode and I’m not even through the bosses yet.

The gameplay is undeniably the best in the series thus far for sure.

so what happens after you complete the entire run? do you keep playing or do you just start playing as a new character and you lose your progress?

I intend on doing a video for the daily run on grounded. I have done it but it wasn’t clean run at all, not easy on grounded especially bloater bosses

Seriously though, I wish they actually put a bit more care into Joel and Tommy. They’re my favourite characters and can’t even dodge but ohhhh they are “sturdier!”

I have searched a lot about this mode on Google, etc., but no one has asked anything about it, and I have never come across any information about it. Is the Roguelike mode unlimited? So can we play as much as we want or no? I learned that there are 12 waves. If we finish 12 waves, does this mode end completely or do we always start from the beginning? Could you please let me know how?
Once you beat the final boss round it ends, and then you start again

One time on a mystery encounter I got hunted by infected with invisible/Molotov rain mod. I died sooo quick.

What are the rewards after completing a run in no return?
You slowly unlock things in the mode for each completion you do. For example at the start only the hunted and assault modes are available. You get skins for completing challenges

How do the ai partners work? Can you select whichever ally you want?
Example, playing as Joel with Ellie as a partner
Partner is usually related to the character but not always. You wouldn’t get like Manny as Ellie though however

well in return u have the brick smash, which one shot clickers and stalkers, saving time during the Home Depot section.
And also his gear is super strong, like the damn revolver one shot almost any infected so yeah his gear is favorable in terms of power but he can't dodge, kinda like Wesker in RE4 Remake Mercenaries where he has very few healing items and reduced herbs drop-rate in return for being KUNGFU PUNCHING ASSHOLE badass + parry almost anything, including bosses one hit kill animations.
Logistically he can, I guess it's just a trade off for gimmicks
Revolver will one shot the runners but that’s all, needs to be a headshot else on other infected and human enemies. The best two characters in my opinion are Tommy and Manny

Going prone in Part 1 would have required a major refactoring of the levels in Part 1. It's a new feature for Part 2, why take that away?

People dislike Joel's ability to dodge, but I think if you can kill the enemies that would make you dodge, by using the upgraded revolver, then it's not that big a deal

The reason I'm excited for this is the better Lod foliage....the last of us 2 on ps4 has terrible Lod and draw distance....the worst I have ever seen is ff7 rebirth though u have grass and flowers rendering 2 feet in front of cloud
