- The weirdest guitar (or guitar-shaped organ), I've ever played. Not sure I'm doing it full justice here, with quick renditions of Procul Harum's Whiter Shade Of Pale and the Tetris theme (or Korobeiniki, as the original Russian folk song is called). A piece of space-age wizardry from Dick Denney, the man who brought us far better-known classics like the Vox AC-30. This crazy hybrid the result of putting the circuitry of a Vox Continental Organ into a Vox Phantom Guitar.
Funnily enough, it does play perfectly well as a guitar - with a lovely shimmering tremolo. But, each fret is embedded with 6 separate sensor strips, which act as the contact points for the organ pitch on each string. Engineering-wise, it makes sense - you've got to retain separation between the contact points. So you do have to hold yourself back If you like your finger-bends, for fear of slipping off the sensor into the dip next to the adjacent sensor. A true analog eccentricity.
And, if ever you've wanted to find someone to blame for the Roland Synth Guitars and Synth Axes of the 80s, Dick Denney is the evil genius that started it all ;-).

I'm curious: in the Tetris song, did you play the melody on top of prerecorded chords or does the instrument play both simultaneously?
Thanks very much! I did record the backing chords for both first, still using the same Guitar Organ - the technology didn't go so far as pre-programming. That said, for the Tetris song, it was just a question of pressing the open string buttons that you can see set below the neck pick-up, rather than having to play anything on the fretboard. So, if I wasn't using a pick, then I guess you could play the two together at the same time. One for the skilled operator!
You cannot get the best out of this VOX organ Guitar unless YOU HAVE THE VOX METAL BASED PLUGIN PLECTRUM......many may have been lost or sold without it, but IT IS NEEDED, and I have a mint NOS one for sale if you want 100% total authenticity
You're lucky to have one of those! I've got the original one for this V251, just need to get round to using it more!
Think you misunderstand, MINE IS original one have had it since 1967/8. The PROPER VOX one, not a copy one.

There weren't that many made - definitely pioneering, but not entirely practical! This one came up in auction about 4 years ago, and I've seen a couple more in auction over the last few years. They need a lot of love!

😂. Well, certainly an amazing piece of technology from the mid-60s. But love Whiter Shade Of Pale (even the Tetris theme), as I do, I can still find plenty to love in 2023 😀
