Not your average DIY workshop and I didn't know I needed servo-drives to open a kitchen cabinet. I'll definitely be installing these if I become paraplegic.

I guess it's standard hinges, slides, and handles again. And maybe a bathroom remodel with the money they saved not using Blum hardware...
Blum Hardware is really expensive, yes, but it'll last at least 15-20 Years because the Qualitystandards are really high! :)

Amazing process!!! So much work but very well elaborated as always :) Blum has crazy cool products for sure. But the hinges that you chose are not meant to be used with the Tip-ons. You should have asked for springless hinges instead. I used them on my built-ins around the murphy bed, also the ones that you pop in the holes and close the latch to secure to the doors and cabinet frames. Since they don’t have springs inside, when you push to open, the door opens nicely and widely (like 8 or more inches). With the hinge model with springs (and blumotion in your case), you get that weird movement where the Tip-on pushes the door to open but then the spring pulls the door back shut, leaving you just an inch or so to grab. I find it very inconvenient and sometimes even impossible to grab if the door is big. Give them a try when you can! ;)

It's funny how old fashioned American kitchens are in general.... dark stained woods, shaker doors etc seem very common. We've had this blum stuff for 30 years in the UK and Europe.
I've always thought the same. The US is very big on dark timber kitchens and massively overstated range hoods as well.
His "Not So Tiny House" has pretty common stuff from Europe in it anyways. First the wall hung toilet, now the Blum hardware and the built in stove and oven, which are all pretty much standard here in Europe...
Last year when I was between jobs I worked as a cabinet maker for a local kitchen/bathroom/laundry room renovation company.
We only used Blum hardware and I instantly loved working with the hardware. It works super well and is very high quality.
We didn't do Tipon adaptors on the inside of the cabinets. We had to drill holes into the 16 mm (~5/8 inch) face frame using a bit which leaves practically a hair's width om material on the outside of the cabinet frame. Even with a jig it was easy to get blowout on either side of the cabinet. So I can understand why you used the adaptors 😂

A while back I built out some cabinetry with flat panels in a very similar manner. I spent the majority of the time coercing those large flat panels to stay flat. I consider it a lost battle.
How'd you get your flat panel doors flat? Any suggestions?

Great process of the work so far. Since I have been working with Blum hardwares for more than 4 years niw, my advice should be nor using hinges with springbreaks if you use it with Tip-on's. Just try them with normal springless hinges or turn of the break on the exsisting ones. ;)
Love that Blum stuff ($$$$)! Does anyone know where I can find that edge banding router fixture that holds the router horizontally? I've seen it or something like it in a few other videos, but can't seem to find it with my Google foo.

Is that something you came up with or something you purchased? Can you share more details on that please? Thanks and great stuff.
Each servo is about 100 dollars, it seems. Including the frame and drawer slides, I'm guessing this costs 150-200 dollars per drawer for hardware only. And the Aventos servo drive system for the overhead cabinets is 300 dollars each.
That's pretty steep. But I guess kitchens are expensive, might as well throw it in while you're at it...
spend a couple extra grand so when your kitchen's servos fail you're locked out of your food and dishes lmao

Not sure how often you do viewer suggestions, but it would be cool to see you make a standing desk, not just the table top and kit legs, but see how you’d approach designing the legs and motor system. Would make for a very interesting video and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else truly DIY a standing desk before.

From a business perspective could you do a video on how you keep track of customer orders? Do you use a CRM and print out work tickets, do you just track them on a white board, use a notebook? I’m thinking a printed work ticket on a clipboard hanging in the wall for each custom build order might be the way to go. But do I need a CRM behind it to invoice, email, etc?
What happens with those handy dandy electronic hinges when the power is out? I live in Florida, and at times in the summer, it seems the power is off as much as its on due to the weather. I do love the top lifting hinged doors though.
Serious question. What happens if the power goes out? Can you not open your drawers?
Similar units run on a battery backup that is controlled in at the power source, but in the event that power is out for a few days or whatever, they can still be lifted and opened manually.
I mistakenly used soft close Blum hinges for ages with that tip on hardware. Try your same set up with Blum's "free swing" hinges and the tip on takes on an entirely different life. They open fully instead of just a couple inches.
How did you deal with the clash between the sink and the Tip-On push-to-open buffer cylinders which project back into the cabinet volume?

Johnny - great work on the cabinets and on the "not-so-tiny" tiny house build. I appreciate your cost break downs and your usual honesty concerning when you pay for things and when they are "gifted" to you by the supplier or the manufacture. I feel that some of the shine came off your honesty with this video. I do not begrudge you the CNC, pro table saw, large work area, or the myriad of other tools you have on hand (and you do a great job of suggesting other ways to accomplish the same thing, and you're honest that it will take longer and cost in time). BUT the jigs (the two from Blum and the edging one from Rockler) cut production time significantly and would almost double your stated cost of the build. You repeatedly comment about how invaluable they are but the cost is omitted from the discussion. Similarly, I hear you hedging about how elite the servo pieces of the Blum hardware is, but the roughly $200 per opener is completely glazed over. A quick "what you could pay" screen shot (what you are already doing) and a "price as built" (which would include MSRP for the jigs and complete hardware) would go along way to helping the average schlub (me) understand the true cost of building your own kitchen. You could bury the sheets somewhere on your website (link on video) to appease the folks paying the bills. Thanks for listening.

How much clearance is needed for servo drive motors behind the drawers?
Swap out the soft close and put in non spring hinges to get the most of the tipon.

Yes in the Remotes there's a Battery. It'll last at least 5-7 Years. :)

The drawers in my house in my kitchen have been working for 64 years without any problems. While yours are new & cool. Mechanical servos wont last 60+ years of daily use w/o replacing them as they wear out.
Aesthetics outway functionality/reliability. Im sure he doesnt mind swapping servos every 5-10yrs. He built those cabinets ita childs play to replace the servos. I take it your home is more practical and traditional looking? My the looks of the painting clip he showed he wants them to look like high gloss metal finish and not show any of the wood grain. To each there own lol

Great video and I love the results. I do have to say, though, that this hardware system treads dangerously close to "improving to failure" territory- at least for me. Why? Three reasons.
One, it's quite simple to achieve the "no handles/hardware" look on kitchen cabinets already, without the addition of (what I assume is) far more expensive hardware than standard. Two, anytime you introduce something electronic, especially in heavy-use applications such as this, there's always the possibility of malfunction and/or power loss, whereas normal cabinet hardware will work indefinitely. (I understand that these hinges & slides will work regardless of the motors being operational, but without the touch-activated feature, you're no better off than if you'd just used standard hardware.) Third, outside of the "wow, neat!" factor, what additional benefit does a system like this bring you? It's not faster than regular hardware, nor is it easier or more intuitive.
I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, and I apologize if that's the impression I'm giving- again, I really did enjoy the video. But I just see this as analogous to voice-activated doors in old sci-fi movies; something that dazzles you the first time you see it, but in actual usage would be far less appealing & efficient than simply using a doorknob. This hardware is undoubtedly impressive, I only question it's ultimate utility.

On your garbage and recycling bin cabinet I hope you left enough clearance for using garbage bags inside the cans. Sucks getting the inside of a can dirty and having to clean it before you can use it again when you need it. Probably don't need a bag for the recycling bin, but definitely on the garbage.

this has got to be the most unnecessary tech that exists in the world of cabinetry, the electronic push to open mechanism on the drawers do not even open all the way and you have to pull it the rest of the way? nvm replacing/servicing those motors..and the sheer cost of everything.. so far the greatest thing I've seen from Blum are the soft close drawer rails/slides. everything else just seems to be reinventing a very expensive and unnecessary wheel. rant over.

Couldn't agree more! Loved watching the video as a how to but couldn't help thinking what a monumental waste. Effort to build, man power, material for a physical action that even an arthritic older person would't complain about. Firmly in the category of useless innovations for me. And with the trend of IoT and everything as a service; any bets this will shortly have a bluetooth app to open remotely, send data to the cloud so you know how many times you use your cabinets so Amazon can predict your next grocery order and all with a low $7 per month account!

Until you mentioned the power supply, I thought they got their power from you closing the drawers, using a small alternator. Blum is losing out on business from the off-grid crowd.

Can you do real carpentry work? The c&c machine is cheating. You should have robots build it for you to. they already are doing most of the work. Most diy people are not going to be able to buy hardware that cost that much. Your videos are good. except for the fact that most average people are not going to have half or a quarter of the high end tools you do. so it's hard to relate.
