Belgium's Shocking Human Trafficking Scandal

- The Borealis chemical plant in Antwerp, Belgium, recently came to light as housing the country’s biggest ever human trafficking case, 174 foreign workers were held in slave-like conditions, forced to work on the site.
Dubbed ‘Qatar in the port of Antwerp’ in the national press, alluding to the exploitation of foreign workers in the construction of the World Cup stadiums, this case was unusual in its scale and for the government’s lack of response. But two months after the case came to light, there was still no help for most of the victims. ‘This is the same thing I saw in Qatar. The fact that this can happen here, that it can go on for a while before it’s discovered, this is really not normal’, says Luc Cortebeeck, who headed the International Labour Organisation investigation into Qatar’s exploitation of migrant workers. ‘When this happened, nobody came and said anything to us. Nobody cared’, says Hüseyin, one of the workers. ‘I was crying so much, because my child needs milk, and it wasn’t possible for me to send money’, says Afrose, another worker.

There is something unpleasant about the air in Belgium.
So they got actual work permits in the end and now have all the protections they should have had from the beginning that the company had denied them? The system may be slow but it seems to work. Businesses that exploit people can be held responsible by the government and the legal system, even though it can take some time.
There are some times when the legal system working slowly is fine. Slavery is not one of those times. A system that has to wait months to act on slavery has failed.
@@chris2610 Absolutely agree!
These are human beings that they failed to pay for months. It shouldn't have taken the legal system to step in to make this company do what was right to begin with. Legal wheels turn slowly but in this case, they needed immediate help.
I have to say, and this will sounds bad but I feel happy that I am getting sold out by my own "people" and they do as well. It gives this double feeling of kinship, hope they get help soon and we really need to do something with subcontractors
At. Least in Belgium people can protest
But in qatar you can't
That's the problem of muslim
🇧🇪 doesn’t owe these people anything…does their own gov do for them???crazy that they think they are entitled to the same benefits that citizens spend yrs putting into
There's a Half-Life 3 joke somewhere in here but this is too sad
yet they acuse qatar of human rights abuses
You are saying two wrongs make a right?
Yes, yes they did. And your point is?
Doesn't make it untrue .
Theres a documentary called "the eyes of the devil" it talks about alot of horrible stuff that goes on in Belgium
One of the few times I am happy I can speak and read dutch. also great on belgium not to dub their shit
“Biggest human trafficking scandal” and its men on a construction site. Unreal
Same as in Qatar.
DESPITE INEQUITY, THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS AND POWER OVER INJUSTICE!!!
IT IS WTITTEN:
"FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD."
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS EXPERIENCE SO THAT WHEN THE MOST HIGH & YOUR SUPPORTERS OBTAIN YOUR RELEASE, EQUITY & PARITY FOR ALL OF THEE, YOU WILL NEVER PERPETRATE THIS TYPE OF ATROCITY UPON ANYONE!!!
Stinks of qatari money.
Belgium has history of atrocious in Africa. Millions mutilated, killed, exploited in Congo during king Leopold reign. They were also involved in Rwanda situation...
To my knowledge no compensation to African families. These people are their ancestors....(not all of course). Some people have a conscious about right and wrong and justice...
True but future is more important,,,Leopold is what you call a mixture of manure from both mother and father side,,,guy is so inert about prestige and power, wealth ignore everything else in the name of rubber,,,His father should have used a condom and save the world of another manure
Everybody enjoying FIFA
To be totally honest, when I hear "human trafficking", I think of women kidnapped and forced into sex slavery or prostitution. This seems kinda amateur leauge.
Your problem is not understanding the meaning of the verb ''to traffic'', and the low quality information media frequent misuse of the word.
That's what these companies do in order to wash their hands of guilt. When they deceive us into thinking that slavery is only a physically or sexually violent wrongful act, then they get away with these more common wrongful acts of not paying their workers.
And it’s 20 secs ago !!!
They need a spokesman who can speak and write English. No wonder they get no help, I can barely understand what they are saying and their signs make no sense.
“Soc1alist European Union” Hypocrites!
Why is anyone surprised? Belgium has an historic record of slavery and maltreatment of non-Belgian peoples. Where are the EU, NATO, UN, and Belgian law enforcement authorities (besides sitting on their hands and tutning a blind eye?)
