      Hello,
Many of those entering the criminal justice system have been subjected to a lifetime of social exclusion, including poor educational backgrounds, low incomes, meagre employment opportunities, lack of engagement with normal societal structures, low self-esteem and impermanence in terms of accommodation
and relationships with family members. The Social Exclusion Unit (2002), in their highly cited report, claimed that prisoners were thirteen times more likely to have grown up in care and more likely to have ran away from home as a child. They revealed that most prisoners had disrupted educational experiences and were less likely to have any qualifications or basic skills. The impact of imprisonment can also be destructive, as research demonstrates that one-third of prisoners lose their home whilst in prison, over one-fifth face financial problems, two-thirds of those that had a job lose it whilst in custody and over two-fifths lose contact with their family.
      I hope this helps.....
      James
