Sorry for the late upload here, this was a hell of an edit 😥😅 Have you ever visited an abandoned settlement? 🙏🏼
P.S. if you enjoyed the video, don’t forget to drop a Like 👍🏻 ❤
There are villages in Cyprus that have been abandoned because of the war since 1974. Unfortunately, they had to abandon their property. Very sad history for the small island of Mediterranean sea

I’ve been to Pyramiden twice and both times in winter..it is THE best place to visit on Svalbard..and the hotel is amazing..Next time I go it will be in summertime. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
@@MattandJulia unfortunately not yet, but I think it would be an amazing adventure going there. It must have been a hard life isolated like that.
Funny how the people there were treated a little better than most.
I’m sure the abundance of great seafood would have been a luxury most people in the USSR never would get.
The internet signal way up there sure would be slow, never a worry just so glad you got it out tonight, it was perfect timing, thank you so much.
Agree with Julia, having such a beautiful view in front of you, staring at the beauty of the nature, is the ultimate satisfaction, in a Polar landscape reconnecting with the Nature would be amazing.
This! 💯❤️❤️❤️
Great content. Would never see this kind of places if it's not for you guys! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! So happy to have you along with us!! 🥰❤️
What a stunning place! It's amazing to see how well preserved it all is. Also, this makes me appreciate the grand experiments the Soviets attempted. Although it didn't work out in the end, it's amazing to see what they did achieve even for a short time. We need more societal experiments to find better ways for societies to get along and support all their citizens. Thank you so much for sharing this tour with us!
Thank you so much for coming along with us! 🥰 Really glad we could share it! ❤️
Your channel is among the highlights of my UA-cam watches. Keep up the excellent travelogues.
Thank you so much Andrew, that means the world!! ❤️🙏🏼
Well, Pyramiden was not nor will it be on my bucket list. So glad you went there for us! Excellent drone shots and filming in the different rooms and buildings. When you go (of course you will) to Namibia, visit Kolmanskop which is a ghost diamond town. Bowling Alley, theater, houses, hospital... now abandoned with lots of sand. Perhaps too hot for you Julia!?! What a unique visit this one was. Thanks for taking us there. Hugs from France.
Thank you so much Linda! Really appreciate it, glad we could share it! ❤️ We will definitely take a look at Kolmanskop 😍 Lots of love to France form the both of us 🙏🏼
What a video ! Guys. Pyramiden, it's like a place that time forgot. Enormous potential for eco-tourism. Beautiful views and a calming presence. Thank you for the wonderful tour.
Sending you much love from The Chesapeake Bay ❤ Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Thank you very much guys! Really appreciate it ❤️ For sure, we hope with time it will bring this place back to life 🙏🏼 Sending lots of love to you ❤️
Thank you for the great adventure into our world. I could feel the respect for what you two were viewing.
Thank you so much, that means the world! ❤️🙏🏼
What a wonderful tour, thankyou Matt and Julia!❤
Thank you very much Cathie! 🙏🏼❤️
This is one of your best series. I can imagine living there. Looks lovely to me.
Thank you so much! That’s means the world ❤️🙏🏼
One of the best! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! ❤️🥰
Seeing these video's, especially this one. Truly gives light of how people in the north really live. I never knew these towns existed till you both bought them to the surface for us all to see. Thank you for taking us on this journey. I do hope you didn't have any run-ins with any polar bears. It's truly as you said, time is frozen there. Cannot wait to see the next adventure. Be safe!
Thank you so much! ❤️ No bear encounters thankfully 😅 Really appreciate the lovely comment, can’t wait to share what’s next 😍
Wow, this is such an imposing place. Relics of the past. Owned by a different species now. The polar bears ! Impressive video ! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much Yvonne, really appreciate that! ❤️❤️❤️
Outstanding video and very informative as always!
Thank you so much Kim ❤️🥰
Thank you for this view into another world.
Thank you for coming along with us! 🥰❤️
Pyramiden is both beautiful and sad at the same time. Awesome video!
Totally agree with you ❤️ Thank you so much! 🥰
Excellent Coverage - Thankyou - Sad Story - Very interesting
Many thanks! ❤️🙏🏼
Wow, what a trip. Again somewhere I've never heard of. I honestly think your channel needs to be pushed out there, I can see the documentaries you could make. Much love as always ❤❤
Thank you so much Agnes! That means the world 🙏🏼 Lot of love from the both of us ❤️❤️❤️
What an awesome content, kind of sad, though, people have to leave a place they called home. But that Era wasn't that easy. I saw in both of your eyes showing some sadness, which is understanding. Love the video. Take care. Thanks 😊
Thank you for your comment, it was a place filled with melancholy, but glad we could share it ❤️
I always enjoy your photography, keep it up!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Thank you for this wonderful content! Svalbard ist one of the places i'd really like to visit some day. Stunning pictures. Love it!

Thank you very much! Really glad you enjoyed it 🙌🏼❤️
Very beautiful and interesting video. These abandoned Soviet buildings and mines are really charming. Thank you for sharing. You are fantastic 🍀💕🪻
So happy you found it interesting Gabriella! ❤️🙏🏼
Hi from Wales ( although currently in Kyrgyzstan) made it to Longyearbyen few months ago fascinating place
Hey Chris! Lots of love to Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬 😍🏴
You made my day guys. I recovering at home after 7 weeks in hospital after my 6th spinal surgery. So this video came at the perfect time. I’m like you I love the north country.
Hope you guys doing really well.
So glad we could brighten your day! Sending you all the love in your recovery ❤️🩹🙏🏼
@@MattandJulia thank you so kindly, hugs and love toy you both, it brightened my day.very much.
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for another great video!
Our pleasure! Thank you for being with us ❤️
Absolutely fascinating, very atmospheric ,I used to love watching Michael Palin travel the world, you two are modern versions of him
Thank you very much James! That means a lot 🥹 LOVE Michael Palin 😍
Kia ora Matt/Julia. Lovely to hear from you again by video. 😀
I wonder if the relatively good state of preservation has to do with the relative inaccessibility of Pyramiden, which discourages potential squatters and vandals from attempting to reach it when combined with needing a guide who will have an idea of who has been in the settlement. Being in/near the Arctic Circle and the risk of encountering a polar bear probably plays its part too!
Fascinating video. You really do visit some cool/bizarre places. The degree of respect and care you show for the places you go is great.
Keep up the good work/fun.
Thank you so much Robert! Really appreciate it 🥰❤️
Julia, if you like the Arctic, the one place that you should definitely visit is " *Воркутинское кольцо* ". That is the city of Vorkuta (Russia) and settlements around it: Komsomolsky, Vorgashor, Severny, Yurshor, Promyshlenny. That is probably the eeriest place on the entire planet Earth.
For sure, we would love to visit and document Vorkuta at some point 🙏🏼
What is it about this place. It is eerily captivating. The views are amazing and because so much was left I could almost picture the people living here. Thanks for picking this place to visit and letting us tag a long . I had no idea a place like this existed.
Thank you for coming along with us, it means the world 🥰❤️
What a fascinating glimpse into a few short decades ago. Very well done guys!
Thank you very much Kate! ❤️
Been there, loved the place but a day was not enough for us. I really enjoyed the video, thanks x
Where is the video-proof that you were there?
Thank you for coming along for a second time with us! Agree that one day isn’t enough ❤️🙏🏼
Matt & Julia ❤
10 out of 10 brilliant, the whole blog, from music to the complete editing, so interesting for me, actually at some points a little emotional, cannot imagine that places exist, wow, really enjoyed, love from me in Ukraine 🇺🇦 I’m from London originally, love ya both.. look forward to the next blog 👋👍😊
Thank you so much John! Really appreciate it ❤️ Sending lots of love from the both of us, thank you for the support 🙏🏼🥰
Very interesting
Thank you for joining us! ❤️🙏🏼
I really want to visit this town, I love abandoned places. So much nostalgia and melancholy! In my country I have visited places like this, but mostly buildings, but nothing of the scale seen in Pyramiden. Another video that makes me excited to travel and see remote places! Thank you for the care you take in editing, I understand why it takes you so long. I look forward to you returning to Svalbard in winter and experiencing the polar night with its auroras. Love to both of you, I am intrigued as to where Julia is in the last moments of the video, surely not in permafrost land! I know... I will find out in due time! haha Bye
Us too Alejandro, it is truly fascinating! So glad we could share it with you 🥰 Oooh you’ll have to wait and see about the place, buuuut, oh yeah it’s very different to the Arctic 😅
Lots of love from the both of us! ❤️
Woww...
Awesome job in bringing this to light....you can feel it pulling you in.
Like a longing from the past reaching out,
Take hold and don't let go.....
Do glad we could share it! ❤️🙏🏼
Absolutely stunning scenery. Everything there is so nice and neat and the buildings seem to be really far apart. Did you find any sign of hot plates, kettles or coffee makers in the apartments? If not that would mean that people had to go out at -40c in the wind and snow to get a cup of coffee? Yikes, just the thought of it makes me shiver. The two of you find the most wonderful places on earth to discover, thank you so much!❤
Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed the video ❤️ We didn’t notice any signs of heat marks, but i would hope they could 🥶
Really enjoyed this, I had no knowledge about this place.
Thank you so much! So glad we could share it with you❤️🙏🏼
Absolutely fascinating. Your channel is so interesting and informative. How you don’t have a larger following is beyond my imagination.
Thank you so much Nadine! 🥰 We will keep making the videos, and will get there someday 💪🏼❤️
Super cool thank you very much. Missing u already
So glad you enjoyed it! ❤️🙏🏼
Thankyou guys I'm already lucky and live in the Lakedistrict but I havnt been well and it can be such a long day, sat at home, your vlogs make my day and make me happy ... seriously thank you, you go out on ledge to bring it back to to us, and your vlogs are fascinating. Don't ever give it up.. seriously thankyou 💙
Thank you so much!! Your comment means the world! Over the moon we can bring you some joy 🥰 Sending lots of love in your recovery ❤️🩹
Interesting and sad
Glad we could share it ❤️
The final part of the movie "Civil Twilight" (Original title: Arctic Void) (2022) takes place in Pyramiden, Svalbard. I can recommend it to those who like mystery thrillers.🙂
Thanks for the recommendation ❤️
Époustouflant, incroyable 👀 Bonne route
Merci beaucoup! ❤️
Perfect place for meditation.
Very true, missed a trick there! ❤️
Was there in 2017 with a fantastic and funny guide named Sasha. Very interesting place, and recommend a trip there if you are in Longyearbyen
Couldn’t agree more 🙏🏼❤️
Fascinating place
❤️🙏🏼
It’s awfully sad to see these once vibrant towns become ghostly places & in a world increasingly becoming homeless these bricks & mortar dwellings could be rehashed 🧐
For sure! 🙏🏼 Hoping that tourism breathes new life in to this place too ❤️
It seems those buildings still in mint condition despite being abandoned....what a quality of USSR construction was!👍
The unique climate of the Arctic has preserved them really well ❤️
@@MattandJulia I would slightly disagree...Many of the former USSR arctic towns look way worse🙄 Probably a local Norway climate Impacts😉
Hello, first thing to do I like video then watch it.
Thank you so much! 🥰 That means the world ❤️🙏🏼
Superb content. My Best wishes to the lovely couple..
Thank you so much 🥰 Bedt wishes to you too ❤️
All that Soviet memorabilia in Pyramiden would give Mr Bald a severe case of priapism!
For sure 😁
Thanks!
Thank you so much Randall! Really appreciate the support 🥰❤️
thank You
Thank you for coming along! ❤️
Sweety memories never FADES.
OK thanks Respected sir.
Amazing! Maybe add the name of the place in cyrillic russian as well? It would be so cool to get a comment from someone who actually lived there. Edit: the name "Pyramiden" is Swedish and simply means "The pyramid"
Thank you so much! We would love to too, would be fascinating to hear 😍🙏🏼
Amazing series! Super interesting and indeed eye-opening content. Being able to access 24/7 free-of-charge stolovaya would be an absolute delight for me, lol.
So glad we could share it! ❤️ For us too, a little dangerous though 😥😁
Very interesting video and so professionally presented. I was hoping you’d meet up with Cecilia and Cristopher. Maybe you will return during the polar nights and join them for a coffee in a cosy Longyearbyen coffee shop.
Thank you so much! ❤️ Hopefully next time, we are looking forward to returning ❄️
Dude excellent drone footage. Kinda shaky on some of your hand held shots. Stabilizer for your cam maybe. Are there still dead miners trapped in that mine after the accident?
Thank you very much! 🙌🏼❤️ Not as far as we know no, but it made the settlement even less economically viable 🙏🏼
Pyramiden is a very fascinating place. It looks like it could be somewhat eerie, due to the weather/environment, the silence, and the well preserved places with all of the people's belongings still inside. It's weird because I'm having a difficult time finding the words to describe what I feel or what your feelings might be like in a place such as this.
Joel
You summed up our emotions very well too. We came away from Pyramiden with a real mixture of feelings, it was filled with melancholy but at the same time the deafening silence was very calming and we actually felt some hope despite its dark/eerie vibe… Thanks for your thought provoking comment Joel ❤️
Whe you were there you wearing a jacket bat you not complaining that is to cold haw was the temperature thanks for the video places we never know, hope everything is goog in you lufe big hug 🤗 ❤
The temperature was around +5’c - it is summer time there, so not that cold 🙃 hugs back at you! ❤️
Wow ❤this reminds me of the Sovjet Club in Yerevan, last year…the good stuff from the USSR, frozen in time, but for you it was real(cold)😂Lots of love from Holland
Haha, never heard of this club 🤔🇦🇲 Lots of love to Holland ❤️
Thanks for the video. I went to svadbar in 2019 and we tried to visit Pyramid, but our ship couldn't get to the port because of the ice. Your video is very fascinating. I also made a video of our trip myself, but it is modest. Cheers 👋🏻🤠
Really happy you enjoyed it! ❤️ Ah, what a nightmare, hope you get the chance to go back in the future 🙏🏼🎥
Very nice
Glad you found it interesting ❤️
Another 30 years everything will be calmer and more peaceful stable with better environmental care, functional and more just ✌️❤️🇬🇧
That’s all we can hope for 🙏🏼❤️
Fascinating. Not sure I followed what the specific reason was for people to leave so suddenly that everything was left behind. Many of the things left behind could have been useful somewhere else. Surprising they just up and left. There must be a reason for that other than a mine accident. That period was at same time as USSR collapse and probably just literally, everything stopped and nothing coming in to sustain the town, they all just up and left??? Just my wandering mind thinking about it.
Glad we could share it 🙏🏼 Yes, the compounding affect of the lack of subsidies due to the economic crisis in Russia after the fall of USSR, the fire in mine, and the airplane disaster, caused it’s eventual closure x
Very interesting video. Since the apartments didn't have kitchens, I would not want to venture out for a nighttime snack at the dining hall, given the polar bear population. My guess is that young people work at Pyramiden.
Haha, for sure! You and me both 😥😅
I used to work in Churchil Manitoba Canada the polar bear capital of the World,,so this doesnt look too bad 😂
Oh wow! What an experience 😦❤️
The lack of trees I can obviously see, but it seems that there is a lack of dust on anything inside the buildings. How is that possible?
Look closely at minute 4:54 and you will see dust.
There was some dust but not much at all 🧐
I did enjoy your vlog but I can only imagine how grim their lives would’ve been, to work in a coal mine during the polar night. Even if the pay was great for those times, miners used to have a fairly short life span, it must’ve been a pretty depressing life and under constant “observation” from the KGB, probably not to get “contaminated” by “capitalist ideas”.
For sure, working in Pyramiden must’ve been incredibly difficult, for so many reasons ❤️
You must have bumped in to Ben Morris as he released same thing on UA-cam the other day 😂
We didn’t no, but hey, you know what they say about London buses😁
Is this on Svalbard ?
Yes it is 😘
Creepy Chernobyl vibes
For sure!
It is very wild that the KGB left documents behind. Imagine the stuff that they took the time to burn.
We are guessing the burnt everything that was ‘important’ to them, and left everything else 🧐
When we were there 8 years ago there was a functioning hotel. Is it still there ?
Yeah, it’s still there ❤️
Why are there so many abandoned mining towns in the frozen north of Russia?a 1990’s trend that was abandoned so quickly, why did they all go out of fashion so quickly?✌️❤️🇬🇧
Economic problems mainly 👌🏻
the 24/7 canteen is possibly why it went broke...did they also serve vodka per chance??lol
Haha, perhaps! 🤔😁
WOW so sad
For sure ❤️
This is your last video from Svalbard? Strange. From your previous replies to comments, I thought you met Cecilia and Christopher and were going to upload that video.
No, we always made it clear we hadn’t met with them, but they have a great channel 🙂
@@MattandJulia Not really. Your replies to comments on meeting Cecilia were "Wait and see what we have been up to" and "We've been in Svalbard for not too long yet". Those are definitely misleading replies. 😂
Wouldn’t go lower than -20 *inside* the classroom though, unless something went horribly wrong ;)
True true 😅
@@MattandJulia wow thanks for replying, I love your videos! Please do go visit Cecilia in Longyearbyen - I follow her channel on UA-cam as well. I’m in Australia, and I’m quite fascinated with Svalbard - it’s just so alien to someone from here!
Is this more fun than your apartment in Thailand? A world away how do they compare?✌️❤️🇬🇧
As nice as Thailand was, we prefer Svalbard 😥😁
actually its a swedish settlement founded 1910 that was later sold to the soviet union. Pyramiden is the swedish word/form of "the pyramid"
Yeah, we mentioned that in the video 🙂
😊
❤️❤️❤️
They should be ashamed . Abandoned it should be returned to its natural beauty . The island seems to have lots of rules about protecting the tundra and what you can and can’t do yet that place is completely left so just rot.
Unfortunately there are many human structures and previous settlements around Svalbard left to rot. Thankfully this one is starting to get use again through tourism ❤️
@@MattandJulia yes I watch Cecilia and christoffer channel on you tube who live there .👍
Wow! Again, Pyramiden is so much more beautiful than I imagined! They have “skyscrapers” that your video on Lingyearbyen “did not seem” to have.
I am glad that there is a “working hotel” in town. Hopefully, more tourists (including me) will visit soon. I hope to visit Svalbard someday. ☮️
Err…..I meant ‘Longyearbyen”
Wow, thank you! I’m sure you will love it, it’s an incredibly interesting place ❤️
By the way, I forgot to tell you how informative your vlog was. Great vlog! Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👏👏👏☮️
Even if there was a free house, I would not live there... not with the polar bears, the complete 24 hour darkness in winter, and the frigid temperatures. Not as cold as Siberia, but Siberia has sunlight all year round (except Norlisk and Murmansk), so I'd prefer Siberia.
Indeed, my home town of Kemerovo has a similar latitude to northern England 🙃
Think you guys have stole idea of Bald and Bankrupt!
I bet he is jelous!
Can come with you guys visiting Russian town lol 😢
Haha, next time 😥😁

Julia, you say that you are obsessed with the Arctic and love being there. Do you know why? Because you don't live there.
Perhaps, Paolo, perhaps.
