I'm a simple man. I see a suggestive picture of a Frazetta girl, I'm going to click that link.

Kudos to Tom, dropping the Wesley Willis reference.

Bernie Wrightson must have been a big student of Frazetta.

Thanks for another treat. As a writer, I'm already in awe of artists, but Frazetta is on a different plane. He breathes life into every figure he draws, human or beast, with dynamism and emotion. You can't blame Mignola for riffing off Frazetta - who wouldn't?

As a kid I loved picking up Conan comics with Frazetta cover art. He really inspired my art when I was a kid and teenager.

Great job guys! Frank did a painting on Battlestar Galactica in ‘77! Deathdealer and winged helmet guy were used as Molly Hatchet album covers in ‘78 or so! Keep em coming! Make More Comix!

When you're an adolescent the first thing that stands out is the ferocity in those Conan paperback covers, but Frazetta was classically trained and often the visceral emotion is contrasting with almost delicate sensitivity in the pastels and intricate patterns. I'm sure they were both very real aspects of the artist, and it's the struggle between those elements, heart and soul, savage and angel, that hold us forever.

There are different ways to tackle it. You can do a brightly colored under painting then hit it with a mid tone earthy wash. Pick your highlights out with a rag or kneaded eraser. There's wet on wet that can hit some of those blends. (aka the bob Ross method).

I think some of the cool textures in A PRINCESS OF MARS were partly made using decalcomania. You mix some paint and press it into your painting surface with a sheet of paper or cloth, then when you pull the sheet up, depending on the properties of your paint-mix / surface / and choice of pressing implement, you can create all kinds of sick textures. The surrealist Max Ernst did a bunch of awesome decalcomania paintings with similar textures. Frazetta has always been one of my favorite painters. I have many books of his art, but not this one. Thanks for letting us check it out!

The DNA of Frazetta's work is traced back to Alex Raymond. Looking at some of these pieces, and compare it to some of Raymond's work you can see the line and shape of Tarzan or Flash Gordon in the work. Send it forward and you can see how Frank influenced Jeffery Catherine Jones, Bernie Wrightson, and as you mention, Mike Mignola.

For painting, check out Frederic Remington's work. I don't know if Frazetta ever cited him as an influence, but Remington's oil technique sure reminds me of Frazetta, particularly in the way Remington depicted horses and humans under bright sunlight.

The first one, Flying Reptiles, was the cover for an Edgar Rice Burroughs short novel, something about Pellucidar, a land inside of the hollow Earth. Tarzan went there in one of the stories.

It would be interesting to compare some of Frazetta's work to NC Wyeth's paintings of giants, vikings, etc. I think Frazetta would have seen and been influenced by Wyeth.

I am from the Frazetta generation. Some of his work reflects the times, the fantasy work is just that, he shaped the Barbarian man and woman fighting with nature, the gods, and each other. All of it is profound and shaped much of what we take for granted today. Boris Vallejo was another one. Love his work too. Similar, softer.

Regarding the art used for the cover of Blazing Combat magazine #1, seen at 19:47 -- every issue (all four of 'em) of this 1965-66 Warren mag had a Frazetta work as the front cover image. I don't think any other magazine or comic book can claim this distinction, apart from publications specifically devoted to Frazetta's work.

I once heard an art critic dismiss Frazetta as "a mere illustrator" not an artist. What an ass. I've heard the same done to Norman Rockwell. I enjoy Vincent van Gogh and Picasso, but give me a break.

Like the critics on Rotten Tomatoes who will give a great film that has an outstanding audience rating a terrible score. And then they'll look at a lousy movie that's basically just propaganda that confirms their ideology and they'll give it a great score. Never trust a professional critic.

There's a documentary about Frazetta on UA-cam where they refer to that exact criticism, and basically argue that many revered artists of the past mostly painted biblical scenes (i.e. making illustrations from the bible)
