- OK, Gang, here’s a fun unloading clip of an early Xmas present that Ken recently drove back from Minden, Nebraska. As you know, he’s been working on our Waldo Pepper Standard J-1, and it now seems it has a companion! Hope you enjoy this vintage barn find!

That is not something you get to see everyday. Thanks Kermit and congratulations.
My grandfather was a barnstorm and is in the new paper records for that and flying mail between the the wars. As his still flying grandson, it’s next to think of him flying around with his buddies doing shows and giving rides. It was like watching men going to space back then.
Can't wait to see you guys restore this bird. And it’s good to see everything okay over there, after that hurricane.
Hope you are young. Take 5 years and more at best, more like 10 fitting it in with all the other work.
My guess is it will be used for a static display as is. They already have a J1 in the works and I don't think Ken has another one in him. Not to mention the hundreds of other projects they have to do. Besides the only thing this hunk of junk will be any good for is some patterns, nothing in this pile of scrap will ever be airworthy.
WOW !! The red screw pin anchor shackle at the boom end from the forklift was almost loose....!! look at minute 15:34. All the best for the restoration.
And Kermit with his left and right handed precision digital calipers measuring the wing thickness!
Thank you Thank you
Thank you so much for keeping the past alive, Kermit.
Visiting you is on my bucket list 🙂
You will like it...I visited several years back.
Awesome Kermi!!!!
Loving your thumb/finger caliper gauge!! Bet a lot of folks are realizing these early aircraft are not much different than the fabric and dope covered gas models we had as kids....
High tech measuring device! =)
I now understand'what "Flying On a Wing and a Prayer" means.
Another fine addition loved the movie sensational ,flown one on flight sim nice and slow easy to land I think different in the real one 😀
What a treasure. When I see an airplane like this I always wonder when it last flew and who flew it.
Awesome Kermit, you rock!
My favorite airplane of all time, to cool!
This is wonderful. Thanks for posting. The history is so important. Manufacturing, materials etc from back in the day.
This is a great find for sure. Though I am not that much into pre- 1930’s aircraft, this for sure is a real time capsule. Good you found and bought it! Great „unboxing“ / unloading video, always enjoyable when something „new“ arrives at FoF. P.S.: I am hoping for a similar fascinating unboxing video when the Bf 109 project arrives in the (near) future from Canada. 👍😎
The « fantasy of flight » is a f* great reality! Are you guys realizing how blessed you are doing this job?
Hey! No problem! Just a little bondo, some duct tape, some fiber tape, a little crazy glue, and there you go! Oh, wait, never mind! I'm thinking of how my auto shop does it....
Fantastic find...!!!
Great find!!
Great!
Aged to perfection, some assembly required.
I've been to Pioneer Village two times and what a jewel it is. Are they closing it up?
I hope this Jenney lives again. My Dad had one and talked about it a lot. He learned to fly in it.
Cheers,
Lee
Dont restore it....put it toegther and display is as found.
What a fantastic project. 😊
I think Kermit should restore this one using his handy new tape measure 😂
👍
Don maintained that the American flyer in the film "Those Mag. M I TH F Machines was patterned after Walter Brock who had considerable sucess air racing that afor mentioned monoplane in pre war Europe. He later was a mainstay of IMAC into the 30's
Looked more like a "Behind the barn find"
I sincerely hope Kermit considers leaving this relic as is. Just blow the dust off and put her in a climate controlled display case. What an absolute gem. So much can be learned from her present state. I believe it's more valuable just the way it is.
Ooh nice but , Tempest
A nonstandard J-1?
Back in ten years :)
You're really an aero-nerd when you can look at the skeletal remains of a flying machine and immediately identify which parts of it aren't standard. Or discriminate between 2 models of motor by the shape of their magneto mountings. :-)*
Hundreds of trips up and down I80 and had no idea this plane was there. Great find but I have to ask how extensive will the restoration be? Museum quality factory fresh? Actual return to flight?
So... A week or two, right?
snicker, snicker......
How are fairing after the hurricane? Hope all is well!
We did ok. Ian passed well south of us.
What about the condition of the wood of this plane. Is there anything usable again or are you urged to rebuild everything?
Oh bummer I thought you meant a Junkers there for a moment
just needs a little spit and polish to make it as good as new.
Bosses micromanaging is the worst.
How far is Minden from Lincoln?
Kermit, how did you fare with the storm.????
Was this shot before or after Ian?
I can't wait to see this skeleton with its meat back on its bones!
Is any of the wood re usable .or is this going to be a static display,
First!
You WOULD find a barnstormer…in a barn….
Being a jet mech watching this gives whole new meaning of flying by wire.
That outta keep Ken busy for a while! Job security!! Love it! PLEASE UPDATE on the Seversky P-35.
I need to come work for you! You have a huge model airplane to scratch rebuild.
Good to see no hurricane damage to your place Kermit !
Thankfully his airport is centrally located in Florida reducing the chances of major hurricane damage in the future. Wish the same could be said for the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL. That facility is probably facing destruction sometime in the future and gone will be many rare, irreplaceable U.S. Navy aircraft preserved outdoors and even indoors.
I'm depending on you to live my life for me. 👍
A little tape, a little glue and some dope and she'll be flying in no time! LOL!!! Kermit, I'd love to crawl around your hangars and storage containers. No doubt untold treasures abound!
Can't wait to see what it looks like when you get it restored I hope I'm still alive then. LOL
What an incredible time machine. Thanks Kermit for all the great content. Cheers from Australia.
Mr.weeks sir...if you need technical drawings..blueprints...part numbers...maintainence information for your Hispano sueza engine call Jay Leno. I was going through a friend's grandfather's garage and found an original Hispano sueza operation and maintainence manual...and gave it to Jay for his cars. EVERYTHING you would need is in that book!
For years Kermit has been telling us he needs another warehouse to store his toys .
Kermit rescues another bit of history , i guess he can store this 1 in the rafters .
Think he needs another AIRPORT!!! LOL...
I always love your "unboxing" videos. Thanks for showing your teams names on the video.
This is totally amazing. A lover of all things aero related World War I era since I was a kid building Guillow's Comet, and Sterling balsa kits I am truly amazed of the dedication of these folks in their quest to restore these vintage aircraft. That too, their knowledge is mind boggling. How they interact is a pleasure to see as well: no phony conflicts to keep the viewers entertained. Thank you for these wonderful and educating videos gentlemen.
Yes, Thank you for no phony conflicts. Been following FOF for several years now.
Ivan Dutton from Shed Racing in the UK has an ex aero Hall and Scott engine in a racing car special. Can be found on YT.
That's an awesome airplane! Thanks for saving it Kermit.
That thing is pooched. I hope someone paid you to take it because it is kindling at best IMO.
But then so is the Trump Statue in the den with the Magat Hat on.
Wouldn't it be great if that old girl could tell us when it last was flown and by whom? Great find!
Pull apart, inspect, remake, reglue, rewire, recover, 5 years no worries.
Did anyone notice Kermit’s butler at 0:31 in a red hat, holding a tray with a bottle of Naked in Jamaica rum?
Nice touch Kermit, very cool!
Amazing to see what aging and storage environment does to fabric covered aircraft.
How much of the airplane will be original after the rebuild ?
Thanks for saving all these priceless aircraft Kermit. All the best from New Zealand.
Love your operation at Flights of Fantasy!!
OOF...that looks like a BUNCH of years to restore.
Awesome find! Can't wait to see it restored. Thank you for sharing these awesome old pieces of history.
Once again restoration team cries a little. There's work for next 80 years xD.. (...at least...)
My father rode in one airplane in his life....and it was a Jenny. I"m guessing it was about 1935 or so. I'm loving your series as you bring this one back to life "with a couple of new parts".
MR. WEEKS MR. WEEKS How is Fantasy Flight???? Hurricane Ian went right through your area. Oh I hope everything is ok. Since the Hurricane I've been thinking about Fantasy Flight. LET US KNOW ASAP PLEASE.
Gezzz that's a nice office, thanks for letting us see a peek of it. That sure is a lot of windows THAT COULD HAVE BLOWN OUT destroying everything in it. Oh my is that a Beechcraft Staggerwing in that HUGE HANGAR THAT COULD HAVE BEEN TOTALLY DESTROYED WITH EVERYTHING IN IT. Let us know Sir.
I have a copy of the movie 'The Great Waldo Pepper' on VHS. I love the paint job on 'Lola' so much I built a model of it with that exact paint scheme. I'm a huge WW1 Aerocraft enthusiast.

Thank God, I worry about you and those beautiful birds every Hurricane. Thank you so much for letting us know. We love you you Mr. Weeks and we love your beautiful nest of birds.
BARNSTORMER/BARNFIND ! HAAAAA ! IT'S A GOODERN !
How did you guy fair from the hurricane? Cool airplane, can't wait to see it done
Hi Kermit; What a great find! After watching this brilliant video I googled the Standard J1. As a Brit. it was not a plane I was familiar with. You really should emphasize the AGE of this WW1 trainer, it appears to have been only produced up until the end of 1918 and this makes it really something super-special. Great free entertainment from FOF , great crew, brilliant projects and marvelous planes. Thank you!
1 acre of Balkan Spruce for sale - Includes free plane.
Now you can see why they were called flying birdcages! Then the V-8 engine and knowing there were versions that were putting out 200 HP as in the S.P.A.D fighters. I love it! Being a retired machinist just adds to the excitement of watching this and how these early aero planes were assembled. Thank you so much Kermit & Crew.
I have watched many, many of your videos. I enjoy them and find them very informative. As a former communications professional, my only suggestion for improvement would be to ask Mr Weeks to not over use the word, awesome. It is way over used and probably misused. Substitutes could be: terrific, remarkable, amazing, “rarely seen”. Of course, there are more but I just mention these few.
Hair today, gone tomorrow. Good one.
My fantasy of finding a J1 has just got ...one less of a chance! Great find...keep updating please!! I want to fly in it...when its complete!
Perhaps my favorite plane
No damage from the hurricane?
Beautiful.. should piece it together and display it like it was found
Great to see another J-1 saved, I hope this one also gets the TLC is clearly needs and deserves. Do you know the tail number so we can find photos her?
That Pioneer hangar is an incredible treasure trove!!😮
I was dying to find out what kind of damage the hurricane left at Orlampa???
none! has pictures on his facebook
Another awesome video! Wanted to ask how everything was down there after the hurricane. I hope you and your collection faired well.
I saw that project on a couple of other videos last month. "Adventures made from Scratch" and "Mr Goodpliers" both had footage on it and another airplane in storage there.
I am so glad you guys got through the hurricane ok Kermit. What a treat to see this J-1 being rescued. 🙂
😃😃😃😃😃😃 Great Plane, awsome...
I hope it's restored to flight!
Standard Sesquiplane.
I've heard there is an original military J-1, never flown, still in its shipping crate, for sale right now in Reno.
Where? Send info if you got it
@@KermitWeeks444, now THAT is a typical Kermit reaction!! Good on you, sir!
BTW, you've come a long way (in air miles, of course) since you were coming into Walgreens (South Florida Avenue in Lakeland) at 3am, "cussing out" all those sandbags you had to fill for the WWI exhibit, back those many years ago. How long has it been; oh yes, twenty eight years! It seems like only yesterday. (Not really.)
Kermit? My dad had sport aviation from around about 66-67? To about ,76. In the 90's I got bit and he let me read all his issues.
Looks like a scale model airplane kit - only much BIGGER! I have always wanted to fly in one of those early bi-planes. This one looks like it would thrilling as all get out!
“Smells like dead rat”
Better than smelling like live rat.
Excellently cool find.
Just wondering how you did in the storm. New/old toys are always a good thing.
We were fine. Storm passed south
She's a sweet machine
