A few clues~~I have made several of these over the years for sanding my bandsaw bowls and wood sculpture, smaller ones for inside sanding, mostly 2 1/4" wide - Try gluing small squares of green Scotch-Brite pad behind each flap, it backs up the paper nicely for contour sanding and greatly reduces heat build-up and burning, and on the finer papers like 180g will give an almost polished surface. Also, I just use yellow wood glue to glue the paper into the slots even if the fit is somewhat loose, Fill the slot, put a little on both edges of the paper and push it in and leave it overnight. I have never had one fail, easy to apply and clean up.

Well done. Flap sanders are perfect for sanding odd shapes. My guess is that it will last for years since it's not something you need on every project.

John, i have watched a lot of youtube woodworking videos but out of all of them, i love your work the most. They are simple enough to make by a novice like me but also very useful. I have become a sort of fan of your work. Keep the videos coming. And cheers, mate.

The goal of a hobby isn't to complete tasks with the least labor and money. The goal is to have fun and get a sense of accomplishment. John's video scores on both.

Interesting film production in that you provided a perfect demonstration without a single word of narrative. I hit it with a "Like"...and that's not to suggest that your narrative isn't good also.

great idea! A little tip. If you make small holes at the end of each cut, then you could fold the sandpaper and insert screws. That would avoid the glue, and you could also replace the sandpaper. But, still it's great, thank you.

Very good thinking, but these things are basically disposable. Once the sandpaper wore out, I would take 5 minutes to make a new one...but with a hole saw instead. What a brilliant mind this man has!

You don't even need the wood frame. You can hot melt glue sand paper directly onto a metal rod. I had to clean up some small diameter stainless tubing that was about 3 feet long. I took a 1/4 inch rod and glued 6 inch strips of sand paper to the rod. It Worked real well.

What's really nice about this I can use the belt I just changed out of my sander. I always have an inch or so on the sides that looks like it's never been touched. Glad I kept them. I knew there would be some kind of use for it! Thanks

If you inserted multiple pieces of sand paper per slot, you would have a stiffer set-up, and the sander itself would last longer as each piece wears away, it exposes a newer piece of sand paper.
    Overall, a simple build. Kudos.

I like the new style of video John, nice and fast for the short-attention-span-generation. Jokes aside, it didn't need much explaining. I'm guessing you used the bandsaw blade as a depth guide to cut the slots the same depth since there was no backstop and they don't need to be precise.

  • @matts.8342

One idea to save some time while making the disk would be to use a hole saw and use the resulting disk from that. No need for the band saw, plus it's already got a hole drilled in the middle!

Out of curiosity, do you think it would be more versatile if instead of cutting the radius on the end of each flap, you had made parallel slices down the length of each flap so it could more easily conform to whatever profile needed to be sanded? Would it not work as well that way for what you needed?

You could always cut off the excess and just recut the gaps for new sandpaper.
