  • Scene where the mass murderer Garland 'The Marietta Mangler' Green (Steve Buscemi) from Con Air strikes again, to a little girl near the abandoned airfield..
When the plane is grounded in Lerner Airfield, he becomes infatuated by this little girl and her dolls, and starts to play with her. She is later seen during the take off, alive and unharmed. When the plane crashes in Las Vegas, he escapes from the plane, leaving the doll behind. This could signify a change/cure to his ways. Poe (Nicolas Cage) thinks he's insane.

@@bryanjames8946 Well not exactly. First her honesty answers his question about just who the sick one is, then she shows him that sickness or not, she's more than willing to be his friend. These two things cause him to reconsider not only his plans for her, but seemingly his life. The song doesn't particularly matter, it's got some overtones to it, but it's just mainly how they connect not as a predator and potential victim, not even as an adult and a child-- but merely as two people who happened to meet and connect.

@@SwampYankee1701 I can see two possible interpretations for his character. If he killed her (which was the original idea but the studio thought audiences would react poorly) then yes it makes sense for him to be a pedophile killer. With this scene and him allowing her to live, it makes me think he is a hypersexual deviant murderer. He kills women who are well-developed physically or sex workers because they remind him of his own sexual deviance and he resents it. You could then justify him letting the little girl live because she is "innocent" and kind. She didn't reflect his own evils but instead presented their opposition. Once he gets to Vegas, I'm putting money on him killing a hooker on the first night lol.

I actually found this really touching as well, it really stood out to me upon first viewing this film and it teared me up a bit . . . I like to think that this little girl had some kind of cathartic effect on him to restore him to some semblance of sanity, hence why he’s celebrating that in Vegas at the end 🤣

    • @devinpaul9026
      @devinpaul9026 8 місяців тому +22

In her earnest innocence she gave him his answer of just who the crazy one has been all along.
      "Are you sick?"
      "Why do you ask?"
      "You look sick."
      Considering/accepting: "I AM sick..."
And then she goes right on to not only accept him, but to actively attempt to be his friend.
Meanwhile he might just as easily have done to her what he'd done to so many women and never had this experience-- and he knows it. You can see for a short time that he ACTIVELY CONSIDERS killing her and doing his usual thing with her body-- until she simply speaks in a plain, simple way he's never heard before and he finally seems to understand and start to reconsider some things.
This is a character that actually deserves his own in depth movie.

    • @123ubuntu666
      @123ubuntu666 6 років тому +44

You are correct. Best scene in the whole movie. Probably one of the greatest scenes ever in film. I suppose it is just too subtle for most people (and you do kind of need the context of the whole film to make sense of it) - but this should be up there with all those 'great scenes' that kind of become 'memes' - thinking Joe Pesci and the pen, or Robert De Niro and the mirror.
Buscemi plays the part of a particularly deranged psychopath. He's so 'bad' that even other psychopaths are afraid of him. He really is one seriously deranged motherfucker. Your worst nightmare. Yet...
This is the twist: he is not so deranged or psychotic that he can't see who he is with his own personal insight. We get the idea from this scene that he knows only too well how 'sick' he is, but he has gone past caring, he doesn't care about hurting other bad people. But on no account would he ever hurt an innocent young girl. He cherishes her - you can tell. No harm would ever come to this little sweet cherub while he is around.
When the scene starts, there's an implication that this little girl is lost and might be in serious trouble when we find out that she is with this deranged psychopath. Then the scene unfolds. It is a masterpiece. Of writing, acting, camera work - the whole shebang. In years to come people will suffer this whole movie (which isn't that bad to be honest) just to make sense of and watch this scene.
There are many liberties taken here. How come if he is so insightful of his inner character, can he be so dangerous to others? But the unspoken under-current is that he is actually a very good and deeply moral person, who somehow has snapped, and he is cleaning up the streets. He's just a bigger badder meaner motherfucker than the rest of them.
This scene is the final piece in the jigsaw of his character. You could make a whole movie out of it, and I hope some day they do. Never mind remakes and sequels and prequels, why doesn't Hollywood see the Gold they have in some of their characters and extend it further. Lord knows there would be the market for it.
There is of course a kind of clown feeling to this scene with the music of "He's got the whole world in his hands" - the subtext being, he has this little girl (who is worth the world) in his hands. She is vulnerable. He is all powerful. The choice of music is no mistake and is in fact a master stroke of subtlety, when you look a bit further than its prima facie impression.
In one fell swoop, when Buscemi says "I'm sick" - you forgive him all his sins, you realise he has never done anything bad to anyone who didn't deserve it, and you know this little girl will be safe. He is not beyond redemption.
The film makers really missed a trick with this. It's an unexpected plot twist in an otherwise ok movie. It is far too short. They go back to all the explosions and all the pandering that these films get looked down on for.
Why can these people not see the Gold they hold in their hands? So used to pandering to a ready-set formula, they are blinded by the treasures they have within. Actors like Buscemi don't come along that often. And whoever wrote this script, and included this line, is a pretty rare nugget too. Genius at play.
Buscemi has so much humanity, he is almost not human. If this scene doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you need to watch it again and dive right in to its deeper meaning.

she didn't give him hope, she just survived the encounter because she's a child. Had he come across an adult cleaning the pool or whatever, he would have killed him/her. Alot of serial killers choose not to kill children because they still have their innocence, adults on the other hand are the embodiment of everything the serial killer hates.

I’m sure some have noticed, but if not, have you ever noticed that this little girl is the only inhabitant of the Airplane Graveyard? Where are her parents, family? There is no food, no wildlife, nothing. In theory, this little girl just may be a mirage of Garland Greenes inner “Shadow”. She just might actually be one of Garlands victims from his past. This is Garlands moment of clarity, enlightenment, self-awakening. This changed Garland forever. For when the plane takes flight from the Desert, Garland is onboard and content as we see the girl happily waving & saying “Bye-bye Garland! Bye-bye!”. When Garland Greene left that Desert Airport, he left behind the inner-demons of his mind & his past. There really was a medicine for what he had and he had it his entire Life... the Duality of his Madness. The same Duality of Madness that fuels you, me & the rest of human existence.
That’s just my two cents, spend it how ya like.

Con Air wasn't a great movie, but a fun one, and it was moments like this that made it memorable, I like how the character of Garland Greene knows that he's sick, and is child like himself, which is most likely why he doesn't kill the little girl. I know that when I watched it the first time, it was tough to watch him sit down by the little girl, because you just didn't know what he'd do, plus Steve Buscemi played the part very well, as he is one of the most likable creepy looking guys around.

You´re wrong. In its genre, it´s a great movie. Great fun, lot´s of action, load of oneliners and lot´s of great characters. And besides, a lot of good actors playing those sick fucks.

I always imagined the reason Garland Green didn't kill the little girl was because she wasn't bothered about him being 'sick', seeing how she just cheerfully asks him if he wants to sing straight after he admits he's mentally ill.

All great action movies have that one moment that elevates it from being just another generic one. Mad Max Fury Road had the visually arresting sandstorm; The Matrix had that contemplative bending spoon analogy; Die Hard had humour....and this scene does the same for Con Air.
This scene is an effective pause, taking a deeper look into the most dangerous prisoner in the movie. It starts off creepy then tense then funny in the end. Even though it doesn't really move the plot forward, it adds another layer to the film that saves it from being generic

If this is needed to live with themselves then they are not psychopaths/sociopaths because needing that to live with themselves is empathy/guilt and psychpaths/sociopaths don't feel bad about what they do.
I thought he was a child murderer/pedophile and he saw in this moment a 2nd chance to not do the same thing and maybe be free. He has the whole world in his hands, ahead of him, if he can no longer hurt children. That's whay he sees and I think it was genuine in the moment and that was even sadder. He knows he is sick and their is no medicine or cure. The line in the song about having the children/babies in his hand I found disturbing because I saw his sickness in that, a whole world of freedom bit a whole world of opportunity for children in his hands. I genuinely wanted to like him and felt empathy for him, as evil as he was. I had hope for real change and him burying his monster.

Interesting theory I have about why he decided to spend time with the little girl instead of staying close to the plane and potential freedom. Garland was a killer, no denying it, but his time in prison gave him a place to focus on self-reflection, read up on psychology (like Cyrus), and he more than likely started mandated sessions with a prison psychologist/counselor. All of this combined to form a small level of desire to cure himself of a “sickness.” However, no amount of studying and therapy could ever cure him of his disease. So, prior to the prison break, Garland had given up and resigned himself to his fate.
Then, Cyrus and his cronies spring their plan. At first, it merrily amuses him. It’s likely he never imagined it would work, but when they arrived at the airfield, you can notice a shift in Garland’s attitude. Instead of jeering and smirking, he wanders the airfield in an almost trance - like he can’t believe he might actually find freedom.
Suddenly, a voice of pure innocence shakes him from his stupor. He looks down to see a smiling child at his feet. It’s a test. Will he murder this easy target and continue to feed his murderous impulses, or does he leave her alone. Suddenly, he’s reminded of the escape. The danger it presents to not just him, but now this little girl. Without realizing it, he saves the little girl from an impending shootout with the police. This one act of heroism (accidental or no) is enough for Garland to build on. Hence, his escape and changed personality.
All that said. He could’ve just decided not to kill her to catch the plane and the personality shift is just another mask. Oh well. I like my theory. 🤷🏻

I just thought of something after first seeing this film so many years ago. Perhaps this girl isn't real. It could could be a manifestation in his mind to deal with his inner demons. A following scene of the little girl waving bye as the plane leaves could be him letting go of his demons
