Thank you so much for a great video. At 83 yrs I finally found a name to the method I was taught to knit when I was 15 yrs by my mother who learned from a nurse she worked with who was from Germany. All these yrs I have been told “ you knit funny and it’s wrong.” Personally I found it easier than other ways and now I know I wasn’t crazy to keep knitting that way. I would enjoy any other videos you have on this method and I have watched Fiber Chats from the first time you made videos. Thank you again.

I taught myself knitting and for a looong time i couldnt find any videos online of people knitting the way I do. It's such a relief what I'm doing is a real thing! Definitely we need more videos about combined continental, it's really the simpliest and most organic way of knitting 😊

Ahhhh!!!! This explains why when I started to relearn how to knit at 31 (I am now 57) I felt like I was “doing it wrong”. My Polish Grandmom taught me to knit when I was 4 years old. My muscles remembered those lessons when I was 31 and picked up my needles again. I was told I was knitting wrong when experienced American knitters saw me knitting when I was 31 and was re-teaching myself how to knit. My hands remembered my Grandmom’s lessons! So, what did I do? Because I was told it was wrong, I had to learn how to knit Western style. I feel like I was robbed of the precious lessons from my Grandmom, because I was told my Eastern style of knitting was wrong. This breaks my heart!!!! My Grandmom gave me a gift of immeasurable value. I had no idea until now!
Sad other knitters weren’t encouraging you of your unique lessons from Grandmom. I hope you can re-embrace the eastern method again as I am learning it new!

I've recently been experimenting with knitting in a way that feels natural and comfortable to me instead of my lifelong method of English style "throwing", and this is what I've been doing, as it just feels so right! Back in the mid 80’s a co-worker who was from China showed me how she knit and I was awestruck by her speed and efficiency. I knew only rudimentary throwing at that point. Unfortunately, there was no time for me to learn from her, but the image of her hands flying burned into my memory. I am thrilled that I can now try this process with help of your help.

Irina, I learned to knit at a local yarn shop….but when I visited my son in Pittsburgh, I would sit in on a Saturday afternoon knit group. Ingebord, who owned the shop, encouraged me to knit continental and that’s where I learned, evidently, to do combination knitting. And yes, more technique videos would be very welcome! Happy New Year🎉

Thank you for naming my grandma’s method. I recently changed over from throwing to the “grandma method” and the amount of repetitive use injuries have decreased dramatically. Beautiful demonstration. Thank you! I was taught the same way. Yes of course the decreases. My mother taught me left handed and I am right handed so I always used the combination to straighten out my mess. Not anymore because after all the years I can read the stitches

This is extremely helpful. I am wanting to knit a more consistent tension, especially when doing ribbing, and I'm a continental knitter. You made it clear. I loved this!! My grandma and ma knitted like this and I forgot it bc I was knitting continental and told this way was "wrong." Shame on those folks! I love this combination method, my fabric is better looking and dense, and my tension is more even.
There are so many ways to knit. As long as you achieve the right fabric, nothing is wrong, just different
My mom taught me to knit English style (throwing) which is still my default. Years later, we were living in Israel and I saw people knitting like you are showing in the video and so I learned this method. I never knew that it had a more specific name other than continental, but because the stitch orientation was changed from the knit to purl row, I thought maybe I had learned it incorrectly. It’s really so much easier than continental with the western stitch orientation especially on the purl stitch. Thanks for sharing and I’d be interested in seeing how you increase and decrease whenever you have time.
It might seem confusing, but I think it’s a very intuitive method. I’ll work on other tutorials this month
My Grandma never got to show me her knitting skills while she was alive but I’ve always felt her presence in my knitting and since I started. When you called this Grandma’s method I felt like she was encouraging me on through this sharing. Thank you for reminding me of her and her presence in my knitting. My favroite way to knit. Those purls are so good.
I love to purl in combined continental knitting but I haven’t gone beyond that. It is so much easier to purl than any other way. I would appreciate more videos on the technique. Thank you.

But I get stumped with more complicated maneuvers. Since you are expert at fine lace, I hope you will include some of the more complicated stitches in this series. Sketches of stitch orientation (at 4:36 ) are fundamental, and something that was not stressed when I was learning to knit. Your teaching is wonderfully paced, filmed, and narrated; please continue and discuss what happens when instructions say “ yarn over” (YO) as in making lace…does orientation (direction of wrapping yarn over needle) matter, or does one simply address orientation when coming back to work that YO?

Thank you so much, Irina. I sure knew how to do combination knitting, I love it, especially for ribbing, but my tension isn't that good when I hold my yarn in the left hand. My light bulb moment in this tuto was how you tension your yarn, between your index and major fingers + with your hand pressing a bit on the left needle, that was the missing part of my puzzle, I'll try and see if it helps regulate may tension when I try to knit continental. Thanks so much !!! What a great gift for the New Year ! Of course I am interested in decrases and increases in combination knitting.

I am in the middle of a baby sweater, so I will not try for a couple days, but I promise I 'll tell you. I really hope it does get better, I'd love to knit continental, but up to now every time I tried it was a disaster. I only do it in colorwork with two hands. @@Fiberchats

I love this style of knitting ! I used to be an English-style knitter as I learned from my mother...but years ago (in the 90's) it became a trend to learn continental, so I took a class taught by a woman from a Baltic country (I have since forgotten which country)...it soon became apparent to me that I was not knitting like anyone else I knew ! Unfortunetly for me I did not continue this Eastern combination style and have forgotten the mrthods of decreases and increases...so YES lol I would love a refresher lesson Thanks and Happy New Year ❣P.S. I am a continental combination knitter, if you unraver 19 stitches and measure the purl row , I use 1-1/2" more yarn then on the knit row. It is good info to know because of the yarn you would need in a project. Normal is about 1/4" between the knit and purl row in 19 stitches.

Excellent video tutorial, Irina. I oftentimes will use Continental style to knit the knit stitches and then revert to English style (throwing) to do the purl stitches. I was taught English style (throwing) originally when I was younger. This method that you demonstrate seems to be more ergonomically correct and results in a beautiful fabric. My question is how do you knit stitches in your method that a pattern requests KTBL (Knit through back loop) or KTFL (knit through front loop) and have them oriented in the way a pattern requests? As well, I do hope you do a video demonstration on increases and decreases and any other stitch requirements used for lace knitting using the Combination Continental Style. Thank you for helping knitters around the world with their knitting skills - much appreciated! Happy New Year and happy knitting....

It depends on how that purl stitch is positioned on the needle. Basically you always knit and purl through the leg of the stitch closest to the right hand needle
I started knitting about a month ago, English style, and decided to try continental after seeing some videos about it. Ive struggled all week to get comfortable with purling, it was incredibly frustrating- until I stumbled across your video! I can’t believe how much easier this is! Do I need to cast on differently for this?

I’m very interested in learning combination knitting, to avoid injury. I’m an English style knitter, but taught myself to knit continental for knit and purl patterns and Fair Isle. Often I switch back and forth for ergonomic reasons. For twisted rib, I resorted to Norwegian purl because Continental purl causes pain. How would I work twisted rib using combination knitting?
You would knit and purl through the left leg of the stitch in order to twist it. I’ll film another tutorial for ribbing and twisted ribbing

Hi Irina, thanks for the video! After watching some of your shorts last year, I knit a swatch and it definitely felt more comfortable for me. I still want to work on keeping everything close to the tips of the needles to avoid poking my finger. Would knitting in the round be like knitting garter?
Yes, unless you knit lace in the round or ribbing. For plain stockinette the stitch orientation doesn’t change

Irina, I really enjoyed this video. This is the way my Lithuanian grandmother knit and I could never understand the different orientation of the stitches after my mother taught me English knitting, and that is what I stuck with.

Question: if you are just knitting in the round,you won't have to worry about reorienting the stitches, is that right?

Correct. If you knit in the round, the orientation of stitches won’t change. But I will record a video about ribbing in the round

Well I didnt know it had a name😊. I akways knit that way until the last year, then I switched to the 'regular' purl because I didnt want to cause decreases and or increases to lean the wrong way. I would like to know more! Thank you!
