It just so happens that I am just past the three parables section in your book (pg 100, "The two parts of repentance"). When you realize the coin did nothing to be found (Luke 15:8-10). You're right! The stupid coin didn't do anything! The sheep didn't take it upon itself to 'accept the shepherd as its Lord and Savior'!! Repentance is a promise, or a gift, given by the Holy Spirit! It's not a work...wow. This just kind of leaves me speechless. How did I miss this?? Thank you, Pr Wolfmueller. I sure do treasure your book.

Thank you Pastor. I’m glad I
found this. I’m Lutheran but we are exposed to too much Calvinist thinking online. I am trying to filter them out. Their doctrine is very toxic to Lutherans and an illegitimate attempt to undermine the Gospel of hope and love

Hello pastor thanks for this teaching and video . Agree God grants repentance because why else would we seek it . We sin and know we did because we ache. Because we upset God and we want to repentance and as you said the fruit is we turn away from it . God also helps us avoid sin at times. Praise God .

Thank you for the reminder. It is a beautiful picture in the parable of the lost sheep.

As a child I was convicted of a sin and a connection with God to seek forgiveness. It is that simple! I grew up Lutheran and never felt I was forgiven. It was such a procedure: regiserter that I would be attending communion, parade up to the front of church to receive the blood & body, parade back to my seat! I have since learned that I need to receive communion of the bread & wine in honor of what Jesus has done for us I REMEMBER!! Forgiveness is that simple: between Me & God!

I heard this definition of "repent" from the pastor of a Pentecostal Holiness church. He said it means to stop sinning and promise God that you'll never sin again. I asked him what happens if you do this, but then realize at some time in the future that you have sinned again. His answer was it means that you lied to God, and God doesn't like being lied to. He brought to mind Matthew 23:13 --"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces." It is this type of American religion that either turns people into Pharisees who delude themselves into believing that they are actually saving themselves by their own holiness, or leads them to despair because they rightfully understand that they are not leading sinless lives.

Repentance is the total inner cleansing of our human consciousness from old attitudes, old beliefs and old prejudices.

Wow I needed this. I've been so disappointed and angry. While I was sleeping I heard take the plank from your eye. I know I'm a hypocrite. Thank you Lord for answering my question what's wrong with me. Work on me so He can use me. Thanks for this message. You always help.

As i understand repentance, it's that realization that you're a sinner to the core and only by faith in Christ can you be saved from the wrath of God, through grace and only grace by the blood of Jesus.
In a way, i can completely see how people can view this as doing a 180. In that, i was once lost, but now am found. The crucial thing is realizing it's not by what we do but by what Christ has done. Beautiful.

Americans must be hard wired against accepting gifts. We always want to add some kind of works on top of Grace.

Repentance is a change of mind from unbelief to belief AS WELL AS a change of mind from living in darkness (sin) to living in the light (Jesus).

Even through I am not a Lutheran (I’m a Protestant), the Lutheran doctrine for repentance is what the Bible *ACTUALLY* teaches!
    1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    Acts 26:18
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
    2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Weegie Boi - Keep digging. You’ll find that happens a lot. 😇 In all seriousness, Lutheran Theology is like spokes on a wheel, where Christ is the axel, and Law & Gospel is the wheel, so that every doctrine is a spoke that connects Christ and the two teachings of the Bible, Law & Gospel. And it is these two anchors (Christ & the Bible) which the teachings of the Book of Concord (www.bookofconcord.org) hold fast. And, while there is many which call itself “Lutheran”, Theology can only rightly be called Lutheran which ascribes to the confessions of Christians made under persecution and collected, published (& reaffirmed) in 1580 into the Book of Concord.

and which sins if not confessed before the church body qualifies for exclusion from attending the Lord's Supper? Adultery? Gluttony? Gossip? Covetousness? Any specific sin that requires the arms and machinations of "church discipline" to get rolling? Hope you have time to answer both questions, posted separately.

If Repentance = Contrition + Faith, then we must DO something (be contrite/sorry/desirous of change) in order to be forgiven? Or do we repent out of pure worship to use the Law as a curb and guide but of course, never to achieve forgiveness? If I die suddenly in between confessions, am I unforgiven and thus hell-bound? How often must I be contrite and thus repent according to Lutheran doctrine?

  • @LisaB_12204

Pastor, I thought contrition is acknowledging/speaking about an action that is sinful. My vocabulary is very corrupted from my years in American Evangelicalism (AEism). Those pastors/teacher used the same words you use but the definitions are very different. Is a dictionary sufficient to understand these terms? If a Calvinist wrote/edited the dictionary wouldn't the definitions be off? Please define contrition, being contrite and guilt for a sinful act. Thanks.

  • @MrGassemann

Does this mean that contrition then is part 1 of repentance? Contrition being sorrow over sin...
    Thanks

Hi Pastor. I have a question.
Does Lutheran Church see the things happening in our culture?
Do they believe it equally important to show love to all of neighbors. And, at the same time to warn the flock that Evil may over take our churches and communities. Aiding and strengthening the flock with God's word?
I'm concerned about our country. I have family who seemed to be going the way of cain; ingnorent of the coming storm.

When a Christian is in unrepentant sin, does that mean God doesn't grant them repentance after they've heard the law against them and still won't repent?

    • @sarco64
      @sarco64 5 років тому +3

I'm not a theologian, but I'll try to answer the question from a Lutheran (I hope) perspective. I think it would be better to frame the question in terms of what the sinner refuses to receive rather than what God refuses to grant. The law tells us that we are sinners, but we can refuse to accept that verdict in one of several ways. We can just say that there is no God. He's just a figment of people's imagination, so why should I care about what some imaginary God's law supposedly says. We can believe in God and take God's law seriously, but say that It isn't accusing me, since I'm a good person. The law is only accusing those other people who need to clean up their act. Then there are those people who have been victimized by American legalistic fundamentalism, who say yes, I am a sinner, but I'm too far gone for God to ever forgive me. I've tried to stop sinning over and over but I just can't do it, so that must mean that God has given up on me.

1:56 sums up a lot of lutheran and catholic dogma. He says "we say...". I say "the Bible says..."
