I bought one of these recently, I got the sunburst one. Pretty nice. Needed to do some fret work on it as a few of the frets were high. No big deal, I expected to have to do some work on it. After all, how much time can you spend on it at the factor on a $220.00 guitar. Other than that the setup was ok. Neck was good and had to do minor adjustments from bridge to neck but no big deal. After the setup, It plays well and sounds good and everything works. I think there is a lot of bang for the buck here. Would make someone a excellent first guitar. Not saying I won't upgrade some things as time goes on, but that's me. No real need to, I just can't help it.

Great review. You hit all the major points. Also +1 for playing clean stuff before layering on the gain. I didn’t realize your wide angle was adding so much curve along the edges. In the thumbnail it looks like the guitar has enough bow to fire arrows with. Glad that isn’t the case.

Gear and Guitars with Mel I I will get back with you as soon as I’m able to afford one I know they’re selling for a great price but I’m getting tested for a lung transplant so money is tight. If you would like to donate one I “ll make sure it’s returned if i don’t make it anyway thanks again for the show I really enjoy it
New subscriber. Just wanted to say what a great job you did on this review. Nailed all the key points and played enough to get the point across. very well done.
This is a great review very comprehensive and your playing is great. I have been interested in these Slick Strat for quite some time. Thanks for the excellent review. you just got a new subscriber.
Looks like it is a pretty cool guitar. But I can't get past the "aging". Fake wear and tear on a new product makes zero sense to me. If they offered a non-distressed version, I'd be all over it. So... 4 years later, would you still buy one?
This is just my opinion and my experience. I mostly do recording of my own original music nowadays, and the pickups on my Guitar Fetish, SL 51 and my Xavier 900 suck for recording (in my opinion). The pickups would probably be okay for playing gigs. The range of these pickups is limited. The Tele Sl 51 and its pickups are very treble-ie, and it doesn't have much bottom. I have a Japanese made Fernandez Tele style guitar, and the pickups on it are incredible, and they put out a full range of sound, bottom, middle and top (great for recording). The Xavier 900 gets muddy on the bass end. These guitar have great potential and they are well built. But there is a reason they are so inexpensive. To start, both of my GF guitars will need Fret work to be completely playable. Basically, you can play them as is (maybe), or you can upgrade them (which will cost a pretty penny). But yes, the bodies and the necks are solid as heck, and they are cool looking and very nice on a certain level. Just expect that you might have to do some Luthier work or send the guitars out to a Luthier. My GF Tele SL 51 is going to cost 470 dollars for pickups and fret work (Frelien pickups). That is on top of the 260 dollars I paid for it. As for the Xavier 900, I will have to put off replacing its pickups and fixing of the uneven frets until I can afford to do so.
I’ve gotten lucky, I’ve only gotten one dud from them a few years ago, but they totally took care of it. I’m only really a fan of the Slick Guitars as far as their full guitars go. But I do dig their pickups very much. They’re wound in the Artec factory to GFS specs. The parts go from serviceable to good. I actually just got another Slick SL57 to see how the quality is now. 🤘🏾 thanks for watching.
@@GearandGuitarswithMel Mel, you are great. I really appreciate that you didn't take my comment personal. Also, I love the Slick guitar I have, I just wished I didn't have to spend a bunch more money on it to get it like I want it to sound. Also I am listening to what you are saying about their pickups. I will look at them again just for fun, and see if there are any that I could put on some old Tiesco guitars I have.
@@kernjames right on man. We all have ears and hands and brains…so we can decide what we personally dig…I wouldn’t take someone’s opinion personal, everyone’s entitled to theirs. Thanks for watching 🤘🏾
Just like Hogan Frieling, watching ya go over this axe ...I ordered mine last night!! I have had my eyes on the Slick guitars for a few years and they were even cheaper , but seriously $50 , Isn't going to keep me from ordering one...Mine is the same ..except I ordered the SL57 Cream off white type of look.. I ..pray mine arrives in one piece and as good as yours did...I expect ..some set up time with it ,but that is easy.. .great review be looking for more
@@GearandGuitarswithMel ya the Stratocaster sl57 that I received is a tank of a guitar...solid. little on the heavy side , but it is just bit shy of 9 lbs .The neck I went over this with a fine tooth comb and the only thing I can find is the nut is glued in just a bit off like a millimeter.. easy fix ..Neck is really wide really chunky.. tuners are tight work decent a little too touchy..but getting used to it. Pickups are decent ..for the $ I can't really complain ..ya I had to Raise the low E saddle...but ya I'm definitely digging it
great vids ,man! especially HB holowbody i enjoyed it a lot.great playing too, will be cool to watch HB CST review as well, i am sort of waiting to pull a trigger on some HB stuff as well.
+Lucky Spook thanks for such positive feedback. I really like the Harleys, gonna get that new video up as soon as I can. Thanks for watching and remember to like, share, and subscribe. \m/
So far they have exceeded my expectations, that’s not to say I haven’t seen a QC issue here or there, but not many, as a matter of fact less than the majority of BIG names 🤘🏾
I've been buying gfs pickups and harnesses for awhile and yes they are kickass ! I just got my xaviere which is the other brand guitarfetish sells , I got a candy apple red tele with a maple fretboard, graphite nut , brass saddles, gfs pickups, hand dressed frets and great fit/finish with a hard case for $268 delivered to my door !!!!! I have a few high end guitars and several mid to lows ....this thing is right there with my 5 or 6 hundred dollar guitars ! Oh and it arrived perfectly intonated , just needed tuned ..... getting the slick double cut p90 monster next 🎸🤟🍻
I had a Fender Nashville Telecaster with a gap in the neck on top that I sent a pic to Sweetwater with a 5 dollar bill folded in 4 and fit really easy. The sad part is, the small E string was almost falling off the neck. So the crack was on the wrong sad to compensate for the string being off. And Fender said it was within their specifications. I said it wasn't within mine and sent it back to Sweetwater.
Your videos are great! Do you own any Telecasters? I am looking for one for you Rolling Stones Keith Richard's Style or Maybe the Police music, preferably with a Humbucker in the Neck? Sorry for the many questions!!
No problem, i actually have two teles, one classic vibe squier, which is stock, and my best feeling guitar, and i also have a reissue 72 deluxe with humbuckers.. great guitar.
Sounds great. Like that they painted the headstock. Would look better with it matching the body and a better logo... other than that its a cool axe nice video too
+Mister Knight Owl the headstock seems to be a very polarizing talking point, lol, but overall I think the guitar is pretty wicked. Thanks for watching! !
Just bought and received a SL '51 black with "rosewood" (NOT - actually black walnut) fretboard - wish I'd gotten maple since it isn't really rosewood, but it isn't a bad board. The neck pickup sounds good alone, but I don't like bridge pickup - too thin and trebly, except if I use it in the middle position together with the neck pickup. Frets were okay, nut sloppy but okay, tuners work but turn hard, and the control knobs (pots) are too hard to turn - will have to drain some oil to loosen them (if that works?). It's been growing on me, and I may use it as a dedicated slide guitar, since it has the 12" radius fretboard, and the nut is cut a bit high (although I could lower it). I'll likely change the bridge pickup to a noiseless or humbucker (stacked or side by side coils), for slide playing. I like it enough that I'm going to buy a SL '55 next, with filtertron type pickups, Gibson scale length, with a telecaster body, probably sunburst with maple neck. This SL '51 is about 9 pounds, so I hope the next one will be lighter in weight, but if it stays under 9 pounds it works. Heavier guitars actually sustain better on the high notes, at least it seems like that to me, and I usually play sitting down. Because of all the great low cost guitars being produced now, I was hesitant to get the Slick '51, but it's growing on me, and I like it enough to get a SL '55 next.......!
Hey Mel! maybe you can help with a advice? The Vintage V6, the SL 57 by Slick and the Fender Squier Vintage Modified Strat ... probably not an easy decision , but which one would you be? Thank You!
If im being honest...i would go with a squier classic vibe...but out of those choices, i would probably pick the slick.. but it is a matter of preference...the build quality is pretty close on all of them
@@GearandGuitarswithMel Hello! I'm it again ... :-) Can you please tell me what neck profile (maybe C or D?) The SL57 has? or with which neck is the 57er to compare?
Interesting thing about gaps in the neck pocket like that is that Clapton's Blackie that everyone loves has a slight gap in the neck pocket just because that guitar was a hodgepodge of other guitars that he loved. And that guitar lasted years for him. I think it comes down to whether or not it's built right, and it seems like that guitar you have was built properly for the price point.
First off, great review. I really liked how thorough you were, and how you didn't just bang on it for ten minutes and say, "there you go." Secondly, how did the trem work for you? Looked a little stiff when you were using it. And did it stay in tune?
+Chris Wayne the trem is actually really smooth, but good eye, I had to back the claw screws out about a half inch to get the string tension where I wanted it.. but lemme tell ya...it's a killer guitar. Thanks for watching, and if u haven't already, feel free to like, share, and subscribe. \m/
Already liked and subscribed. And I think, thanks to your review, that I'm going to snag one. Not sure if I want to do the maple fingerboard, though; I like the Indian Rosewood a lot. How is the weight? Saw another comment saying it was heavy...
I like the humbucker single coil that I put in my Ibanez. It's kind of like a P90 but doesn't have the extra fuzz on the bass strings so it's more like a normal single coil it's wound I think with 43 gauge wire put the magnet is weaker.
+drmarkreuter it's easily on level with say a CV, or even a modern player. ..but I'd be lying if I said that it can hold its own against a genuine US strat. That being said, In my opinion, it's about on par with the Vintage brand. Good luck in ur search my friend. And thanks for watching.
Great review. I was thinking about putting these pickups in a Strat I built. Not happy with the ones in it now. You sold me I’m putting these pickups in my relic. I already have a guitar fetish bridge. Well 2 now. Like there stuff.

great review..im in the market for a Strat...something cheap to bang around in the garage. Tired of paying near a grand for guitars. THis might be the one!! Ive owned squiers, MIM's...but this seems very cool. Glad you enjoy the axe..

Great comprehensive and structured review. However, for me the tone was not that great... in particular position 4 did not sound particularly straty... no sparkle. It also seemed like you recorded at low volume as I can hear lots of pick noise above the guitar. Love the tilt back head stock, I presume there is a scarf joint - you did not say.
+zd351 thanks for the positive comment, I appreciate u checking it out. If there's anything ur interested in seeing just let me know and I'll do my best. Thanks for watching. Please like, share, and subscribe. \m/
Nice review on a good alternative to Squiers....and better in many ways. I too love the pups, and the distressed look....so different than multi layer finishes on every guitar out there (I also have an Ibanez AW240 which is open pore....love it!) It is pretty heavy, glad I'm not playing in a band anymore with this thing. I sold an '84 Korean Strat a few years ago, but so happy I found this! Check out my vid on this same guitar when you get a chance too.
When it comes to the "tone wood" question there are 2 groups of people: 1) Those who can hear the difference. 2) Those who don't have very good hearing. LOL I have this same Slick SL57 in the same color and I absolutely love it. The sound is very nice, so much more than you would expect for the price. I paid $266 Included delivery to me. The only real thing I had to do was "roll" the edges of the fretboard and frets a bit to my liking. Since it was such a cheap guitar I decided to try something new for me. Rather than gently sanding/filing the edges being very gentle I just took the rounded handle of a metal hammer and ran it up and down the top and bottom edge of the fretboard with a good bit of force. It slightly softened the edge of the fretboard and knocked down the very slight fret burrs on the fret ends so it's very comfortable now. I thought I would replace the pickups at some time with some Fender Lace Sensor pickups but I'm really liking the sound of this guitar so I may just keep it stock. It's a fantastic choice if someone wants a strat style guitar at almost 1/4 the price.
+Kenneth Canterbury thanks so much for the positive feedback, and for subscribing, it makes it all the better when someone appreciates what I'm doing. U rock! ! \m/
i´m 63 and decieded to play guitar - after buying a lot of shit, i started to learn everything about building guitars and i found out, that fender is selling cheap shit for a rather high price - now fender and gibson own so many guitar manufactories and they are spreading these misinformation about vintage style guitars - earl slick knows what is really important for a good sound and its not a nitrofinish or a one piece body with a flammed marple top - its about sustain and where it comes from and about the pickups - fender stopped using brass, because they want to earn more money - as frank zappa said, they only in it for the money - i got wounded on a fender fretboard at an us strat in the 80es - i will buy one of these strats and the telly is also fantastic - i would like another neck heel joint, similar to a blade and an option for a roasted neck would be nice - to my opinion the best strat in this price class - this a damn good guitar
IT's funny.. The 1950s-1960s Fenders everybody is chasing.. Was once considered exactly what this thing is now.. A cheap.. Affordable player that sounds awesome.
@@GearandGuitarswithMel Ive been playing 4 years but I want to get the eart explorer for a modern shredder and a strat to do sorta Hendrix and trower like leads and songs that I redo and write from scratch in a trio Im in like Rush meets Cream is our flagship sound but half originals anyways eart vs slick the swamp ash strat with sweet metals and pick ups or the eart (electronic arts )with the amazing neck but sorta lame shame pickups but good Mahony body maybe I can frankinstien 3 of them and make the ultimate non fender strat that offends fender
Honestly, have you ever seen a "budget" guitar with a SWAMP ash body? Totally different trip than the regular ash generally used. And a brass and steel bridge and toneblock, not Chinese pot metal? Whaaa? Take my money, here it is, just take it, Gawd, I ordered one exactly like this but with a rosewood board of all things (its 2020 now qnd currently it is a nada on rosewood, forget it). I am in Canada, ordered one on a complete whim 3 days ago and am just now checking reviews. Lucky strike I think, i cannot wait.
@@syzygy3120 Not what it seems, I am currently bevelling the multi laminated body as all real strats have sexy angles and curves. This body appeared to me to be a rough cut warty fat slab of wood not even fully shaped with the whole outside edges and cutaway not even sanded. Four pieces at the least with a big freaking slopilly covered in wood shavings or some shit hole right through the body where the pickup cavity intersects with the spring cavity. Possibly the worst cavity work I have ever seen. Yet it has a tight neck fit, good fretwork, good tuners, and good pickups. A mixed bag for sure.It sounded alive and solid when I unboxed it but after playing it a few hours the low e string absolutely died , mind you those strings turned my fingers black, so they might \be those infamous Chinese strings. This fellow here is getting fantastic tones out of his. Mine is a test platform wooden lab rat that I will re-shape, try nitro finishing, and slam the P-90 I have sitting around ihn the bridge position just to see what it does.

What's the weight on that one? Great review and that seems to be an amazing guitar for the price. How would you compare it to a Squier Classic Vibe strat? Thanks
+lordsong7 it's got enough heft to feel solid. Lol, the body is swamp ash, and needless to say isn't light, as far as comparison to a classic vibe..I'd have no problem putting them in the same category, and I am a big fan of the classic vibe line. Thanks for the feedback. And remember to like, share and subscribe.

Thanks for the great review. One question re: the Slick SL 57 - have you tried fitting it into a strat/tele type of hard case ? I was wondering if it will fit properly due to the angle of the head stock? I live in Canada and was planning on ordering the Slick SL57 along with a hard case but would like to have some assurance that it will fit in the case. Looking forward to a reply from you and/or other readers of this posting. .
I know what you are saying is the "GFS" company line about Earl Slick and his straps, guitars and "his" aged pickups. Is this legit or is it marketing?
+David Ball as far as I know, from the research I've done, it seems like he actually is very involved in these designs. Either way, I dig em so far. I'm hoping to try some other models in the range, but I have to wait until I can afford it. Lol. Thanks for checking out my channel and don't forget to like, share, and subscribe! \m/

They are quite impressive, and easily worth Twice their cost. 🤘🏾🤘🏾 let me know how it works out for ya

New subscriber. Just wanted to say what a great job you did on this review. Nailed all the key points and played enough to get the point across. very well done.
Love every Slick guitar Ive purchased. Awesome review!
Great review!For a sub $300 guitar,dont think you'll find better,top notch hardware,pups.Whats not to like?
My thoughts exactly
This is a great review very comprehensive and your playing is great. I have been interested in these Slick Strat for quite some time. Thanks for the excellent review. you just got a new subscriber.
Looks like it is a pretty cool guitar. But I can't get past the "aging". Fake wear and tear on a new product makes zero sense to me.
If they offered a non-distressed version, I'd be all over it.
So... 4 years later, would you still buy one?
I would. Great guitar. 🤘🏾
@@GearandGuitarswithMel Good to know. Thanks.
Anytime. Thanks for watching
I will look at them again just for fun, and see if there are any that I could put on some old Tiesco guitars I have.

...I ordered mine last night!! I have had my eyes on the Slick guitars for a few years and they were even cheaper , but seriously $50 ,
Isn't going to keep me from ordering one...Mine is the same ..except I ordered the SL57 Cream off white type of look..
I ..pray mine arrives in one piece and as good as yours did...I expect ..some set up time with it ,but that is easy.. .great review be looking for more
Let me know how u dig it, I haven’t heard how the manufacturing is lately.

I haven’t seen a really bad review of these slick guitars . They’ve got to be a good deal at that price
So far they have exceeded my expectations, that’s not to say I haven’t seen a QC issue here or there, but not many, as a matter of fact less than the majority of BIG names 🤘🏾
Just bought a Coral tele from Slick/Guitar Fetish and love it. Good demo.
I haven’t played an Xaviere yet, but I hear good things. U should make a video for it. Sounds killer. 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾. Thanks for watching.
That’s crazy
I think I saw in another review that it is actually a black stained veneer on the headstock.
Right on. Let me know how it goes, and be sure to check out my new Slick Guitars video 🤘🏾 thanks for watching
Great job with this vid man. You like maple or rosewood better with these?
+Daniel Childs I'm finding that i actually prefer the maple boards on these
Hey Mel! maybe you can help with a advice? The Vintage V6, the SL 57 by Slick and the Fender Squier Vintage Modified Strat ... probably not an easy decision , but which one would you be? Thank You!
If im being honest...i would go with a squier classic vibe...but out of those choices, i would probably pick the slick.. but it is a matter of preference...the build quality is pretty close on all of them
@@GearandGuitarswithMel i think i go 99% with the Slick :-) thx for your words!
Anytime🙂
@@GearandGuitarswithMel
Hello! I'm it again ... :-) Can you please tell me what neck profile (maybe C or D?) The SL57 has? or with which neck is the 57er to compare?
Id say mine is kind of a slim c
Interesting thing about gaps in the neck pocket like that is that Clapton's Blackie that everyone loves has a slight gap in the neck pocket just because that guitar was a hodgepodge of other guitars that he loved. And that guitar lasted years for him. I think it comes down to whether or not it's built right, and it seems like that guitar you have was built properly for the price point.
+Joseth Radiant it really is a killer guitar, everything is tight and straight. .lol. and it sounds every bit as good as any I've played.
hey man I just ordered the 50s tele style I have a fender highway one which I love but I'm thinking I love this even Moore

They’re pretty wicked. I’m a fan. 🤘🏾 lemme know how it turns out
First off, great review.
+Chris Wayne it's a man's guitar. .lol, swamp ash carries a little heft, but it's not unmanageable at all
I just stumbled upon this video man! I feel like getting one of these now. Maybe you can do a shoot out with fender and squire?
I like the humbucker single coil that I put in my Ibanez. It's kind of like a P90 but doesn't have the extra fuzz on the bass strings so it's more like a normal single coil it's wound I think with 43 gauge wire put the magnet is weaker.
As long as u dig it, that’s what counts
Nice review. I hadn't heard of Slick guitars until today, this was a good primer. How do think it compares to a Vintage-brand strat?
+drmarkreuter it's easily on level with say a CV, or even a modern player. ..but I'd be lying if I said that it can hold its own against a genuine US strat. That being said, In my opinion, it's about on par with the Vintage brand. Good luck in ur search my friend. And thanks for watching.
Great review. I was thinking about putting these pickups in a Strat I built. Not happy with the ones in it now. You sold me I’m putting these pickups in my relic. I already have a guitar fetish bridge. Well 2 now. Like there stuff.

At 12:00 he says there is a scarf joint.

When it comes to the "tone wood" question there are 2 groups of people: 1) Those who can hear the difference. 2) Those who don't have very good hearing. LOL
I have this same Slick SL57 in the same color and I absolutely love it.
Spot on bro 🤘🏾

i´m 63 and decieded to play guitar - after buying a lot of shit, i started to learn everything about building guitars and i found out, that fender is selling cheap shit for a rather high price - now fender and gibson own so many guitar manufactories and they are spreading these misinformation about vintage style guitars - earl slick knows what is really important for a good sound and its not a nitrofinish or a one piece body with a flammed marple top - its about sustain and where it comes from and about the pickups - fender stopped using brass, because they want to earn more money - as frank zappa said, they only in it for the money - i got wounded on a fender fretboard at an us strat in the 80es - i will buy one of these strats and the telly is also fantastic - i would like another neck heel joint, similar to a blade and an option for a roasted neck would be nice - to my opinion the best strat in this price class - this a damn good guitar

howd it turn out brother?

Thanks for the great review. One question re: the Slick SL 57 - have you tried fitting it into a strat/tele type of hard case ?
