I recently just set up another system also and you know what idk if I’m making things up in my head or not but all I can say is back in the day 10-13 years ago when I got into the hobby it was still at that point where you go and pick out live rock and my local stores in Philadelphia pa where I grew up used to carry Tonga Fiji Caribbean Florida sometimes Haiti I mean I really can’t even remember them all but it was a beautiful thing lol! I NEVER used to get dinoflagellates and even cyano like I do sometimes these days! Some of the issues I faced within these past few years in regards to reef keeping have been extremely difficult to overcome and I’ve been doing this for a decent amount of time now so of course I was a little cocky feeling like I’ve seen it all !!! NAAAAAAHHHH NOT EVEN CLOSE BUD! But honestly starting out sterile systems like we do now has really made stage cycle process long and hard. I don’t literally mean the point ammonia drops and nitrates rise specifically but instead I’m basically saying the first year that a system is up and running can be absolute hell! Very different from back in the day. Don’t get me wrong I can totally find it in myself to appreciate the fact that we are no longer pulling endless amounts of live rock from our true wild reefs because at the end up the day maintaining those are the priority in my eyes and to many others….. but geez man lacking that variety of wild bacteria along with all of those beautiful hitchhikers you’d find in the tank has really changed the game and it’s made new systems very susceptible to bacterial issues and algae which has always been an issue can be difficult still but I find the topic of bacteria is the one we really need to understand in a much deeper way than we do as a whole. Hopefully these larger companies with deeper pockets that have been investing in science studies regarding bacteria and understanding the strains and how many strains people typically keep in their home aquariums can get us to a point where these bacteria products have a larger more diverse blend of bacteria so that we don’t have to stay at war with the bad bacteria as often as most of us have been because I know I’ve had some tough battles. I now am at a point of just running multiple ultraviolet sterilization bulbs on all 4 systems which I’d imagine probably is not the best thing for keeping some of the essential water Bourne bacteria strains. It works for now tho I feel that’s probably doing some harm as well but I know I’m definitely not even close to being the only reef keeper that just said forget it I’m never turning this off lol. I now breed my own pods and culture multiple strains of phytoplankton as well to help balance out things in that aspect because I’m not 100% sure but I’d say running a sterilizer the way that I do can damage pod populations but that’s just an assumption. Maybe when pods go through depending on contact time it doesn’t actually kill them but rather they then become sterile and cannot breed afterwards?? Just another guess.

Bryopsis, that's my number one hated and it's the first one I got. Took me almost a year to get rid of it. Such a PIA! Bubble not so bad get some emerald crabs or a sea hare. Thanks for the video✌️♥️
Turn rocks upside down. Drown out light. Add more emerald crabs then recommended. Tangs are also known to eat valonia so if your tank is big enough maybe go that route
Great video. If it’s not Dinos it’s bubble algae or random STN on SPS. Always something guess that’s what makes this hobby interesting and interactive. However when the tank looks good it feels good.
So I have a small patch on a rock of bubble algae, should I just get an emerald crab to take care of it or pull it out. I’ve heard you shouldn’t pop it under water because it will spread, advice?
If you can get tweezers underneath they will usually pop off with a bit of finesse. Popping of bubble algae is up for debate. Some say don't, some say it doesn't matter.
YES!! I don't think I'll be transferring anything to the new build for that very reason. I blame my lack of control buying frags from swaps...come home with 10-20 new frags from 5-10 different tanks. You're bound to get something.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Same here. Buying a lot of frags from shows and local sellers, dipping them but not checking them after words. I've had my new 150 build up for a few months, only has rock, sand and 2 clowns..still need to finish building the sump and plumbing it. Also need to build 2 QT systems and cycle them (one for fish and one for corals). I'm in no rush. Hopefully by the time everything I get everything built, the ugly stage will be over in the 150.
I am dealing with GHA and cyano right now, but I was dealing with dinos so I view this as an improvement. I did have 2 or 3 pieces of bubble algae they came in on a frag from a LFS. As soon as I saw it I pulled the frag out and manually removed it.
What’s the largest sailors eye you’ve seen or had? That’s another name for bubble algae. Usually reserved for a solitary single or double bubble. I had one grow in the middle of a cabbage leather reach 1.5 inches diameter.
hey Remy, don't get discouraged i had an out break of bubble algae , i used Vibrant by Underwater Creations it really worked for me.took a couple of months but its gone

Remy I’m a big fan brother. Love the videos. If you have any thing your selling please let me know I’m about 45 minutes from STL. And really wanting to get another tank set up.
Man, I just got back into the hobby myself, a friend of mine hooked me up with a tank and its got aptasia, bubble algea, asterina stars, vermited snails by the thousands. Shoot its going to be a challenge but the end game will be worth it.
I just finished doing that tonight. Pulled the rockwork out to scrub, spray with hydrogen peroxide, and scrub again. Removed so much green hair algae. Almost looks like a new tank again. lol. Now adding two jars of Ecopods to help reestablish the tank. Fingers crossed the few remaining corals survived this. Lost so much to the green hair algae that it was worth the chance with the peroxide. If all goes well, I'll be able to go coral shopping soon! Yay!!
You know, if you sell it all: you then have to buy a bigger one? And I'd say my least favorite pest is Dinoflagellates, as they caused me to break my tank down my first tank and recure (dark cycle) the rock for months while introducing LFS rubble and live sand (which anecdotally, did solve my issue). But, the one which gave me the most trouble is Booke. I had an out break last year that wiped out my entire fish population, either from the disease exposure or to me being inexperienced with treating something as harsh as Formalin.
Bubble algae isn’t a pest in a macroalgae tank… right? Right? For real it’s out of control in my tanks too. Gotta get some more macros in there to outcompete them.
3 weeks ago my tank looked worse than that. Now I'm leaving my lights on twice as long hoping to grow some bubble or hair algae. What happened? 3 saltwater adapted mollies and 5 margarite snails happened. The mollies eat algae constantly while the snails clean the glass. I am now concerned that my snails will have nothing to eat now that all the algae is gone. The mollies will eat anything I feed them although I will put seaweed in on a clip so they can still get their veggie fix. By the way the total cost of this algae cure was $36 for 3 mollies and $5 for the 5 margarites, total $41.
Amphidinium dinos were my worst pest but my current one I have been fighting is some sort of spongy red macro algae that I can't get a good id on and nothing will eat it and tank is a nano so no tangs for me. Lol run on sentence for sure.
Aiptasia. I've tried peppermint shrimp, copperband, aiptasia x and even berghia nudibranch. Berghia did some dent especially at the beginning but they died before clearing it completely and now it's overrunning my tank 🙈 I think it could potentially work again but I would need to probably buy lots of them and with the price and peppermint shrimps still in the tank I'm not sure what to do. I still have cyano which is bit of a pain but still not as bad as aiptasia
@@BahamaLlamaCoral absolutely, they block some of the growth of my corals plus these are some aiptasia on steroids, massive with long tentacles nut some cute tiny babies.
It's a 65 AIO. I'm really wanting something 200+ but not sure if we are going to be in this house for the long haul. Reluctant to set up the big one until we know we'll be somewhere for longer.
I like that you show the good, bad and the uglies Remy. 😜 have you thought about keeping a couple of emerald crabs on hand once you rid the tank of bubble algae? Just in case it rears it’s ugly head again..
Yeah, I might go that route...when I break the tank down I might toss the rock in my frag tank sump with a bunch of emeralds. Those things love to ruin a good rock scape. lol.
sorry to hear about your daughter’s appendicitis. but the bubble algae may have already been in there for months until it found an opportunity to explode in bigger numbers. may have to do a few water changes, check those nitrates again, reduce the lighting, and so forth. remy knows the deal
I got a tank like that lol, Algae kills more coral and faster than any pest. Well maybe not so much for soft coral. Any tank is savable lol. You need sea urchins “tuxedo don’t work as hard but are better behaved, pin cushion are work horses but move things and carry corals” urchins really grind down your rocks and keep them clean. And order like 200 snails turbos are work horses and astrea keep clean around corals.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral all urchins have different work ethics and attitudes lol . Tuxedo is the safest but also has the worst work ethic, better for small tanks. Pin cushions are algae warriors but they WILL pick up every coral they find 😂 Long spine is my favorite but the most dangerous. They are very hungry and get very big. Wen there food runs out they will eat things like Leptoseris and psammacora if not fed. A self cleaning tank needs a billion herbivores lol I have a urchin of some kind in every tank, and the ones that still get algae get a billion snails and tanks with Zoas get hermit crabs or emerald crabs to get the goodies in the crevices.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I have a 25g lagoon tank with one pink pin cushion urchin and he keeps it 100% spotless you can not find algae. There is also a couple hermits and a diamond goby to keep sand clean. Diamond gobies are sand cleaning warriors lol
I beat bubble algae with vibrant every 3 days till gone it took me 3 weeks to kill now I just dose every other week and still weekly water changes. I have a nuvo 60 IM AIO tank.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Mechanical cleanup first (face it, when the tank is coated, you won't get anywhere with cleanup crew), maybe rebuild the rockscape to be more 'airy' (smaller rocks, for example) so you won't have areas with dead flow. Then, in the new attempt, I'd say 1 Emerald Crab per 30 liter (should be 9 gallons?).

Montipora eating nudibranchs are historically my worst pest by a long shot. I hope that I never have to deal with them again.
Ooof yeah....did they take any colorful monti's?
@@BahamaLlamaCoral They chewed up my bubblegum monti Digi and my purple monti Digi.
Worst pest in my opinion.
Love you Remy stay in there
Thank you!!! Enjoy those RFA's!
Vermatid snails for me. They always get to plague proportions in my tanks!
Nice bubble algae tank!
I prefer to call it a "macro-algae" tank! LOL!
Great video. If it’s not Dinos it’s bubble algae or random STN on SPS. Always something guess that’s what makes this hobby interesting and interactive. However when the tank looks good it feels good.
Agreed! If the tank is rockin it feels awesome!
Briopsis took over my tank but reef flux worked great
Fluconazole - who knew a human drug would be so effective!
My least favorite pest is Aiptasia. I'm running a new tank. I will be quarenting everything this go around before things go into the new tank.
Yep, just a matter of keeping up with it...which I clearly failed at!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral that’s exactly what happened to me. Maintenance slipped, testing slipped. Unfortunately there’s no magic pill either.
Where did you get your Golden Assessor Basslet at? Everyone seems to be sold out of them
I had the LFS special order it for me in 2020. Not sure how readily available they are but that's probably gonna be a special request.
Remember me if you cut a frag of weeping willow..❤️
Noted!
GHA, getting ready to move and have let my 32gal go, it's a forest now
There's something about knowing that a move is coming that doesn't help with maintenance discipline.
Mate use Vibrant. It will take you 2 months roughly but it will clear your tank !
What’s the largest sailors eye you’ve seen or had? That’s another name for bubble algae. Usually reserved for a solitary single or double bubble. I had one grow in the middle of a cabbage leather reach 1.5 inches diameter.
Wow!! That's huge!
I have a problem with white sponge growing all through my Zoa’s and GSP! Night mate and no idea how to shift it!
That sponge can get out of hand!
I wish my corals grew as fast as it did!
hey Remy, don't get discouraged i had an out break of bubble algae , i used Vibrant by Underwater Creations it really worked for me.took a couple of months but its gone
Yeah, I've had success with that before as well. I think I have a little leftover!
love the intro! lol
Thanks!! I heard that song and HAD to use it.
How the heck did you even allow it to get like that, must have been months since you did anything with that tank
Distraction city around these parts. Personal stuff, professional stuff, too many things to maintain. It all came down at once. It happened, I now know my limits and I am in the process of making it all right again.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I completely understand and appreciate all the viedos and great to watch, hope all is well and wish you the best man and keep up the good work. Ps I still really want a weeping willow leather
Literally just got done doing the same thing. Bubble algae galore!
It was everywhere!
Green hair algae is my nightmare at the moment
Man I would totally keep that lagoon tank! It’s so rad! And man I want one of those orange shrooms haha
Yeah, it's a super cool tank when its clean!!
How did it get so bad?
Lack of extra time to keep up with it.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I got cha but nothing specific? Something I could avoid?
Remy I’m a big fan brother. Love the videos. If you have any thing your selling please let me know I’m about 45 minutes from STL. And really wanting to get another tank set up.
Man, I just got back into the hobby myself, a friend of mine hooked me up with a tank and its got aptasia, bubble algea, asterina stars, vermited snails by the thousands. Shoot its going to be a challenge but the end game will be worth it.
Green hair algae. I swear my tank was a rolling wild field of grass moreso than anything else. OOf.
I've definitely been there!
Yay!!
Godspeed. I know the struggles of GHA too. Just keep plugging away at it!
Peroxide is the hammer.
A little goes a long way
Bounce algae is awesome 👌
It's worth more too!!
If dino is a pest..that’ll be my least favorite. Another awesome vid!
I'll place dinos as a pest FOR SURE. lol
If you end up deciding to get rid of the Lagoon that is the tank I've been wanting to upgrade to!
You in St. Louis area?
@@BahamaLlamaCoral unfortunately not I'm all the way in denver!
What happened to Bens Nems?
You know, if you sell it all: you then have to buy a bigger one?
And I'd say my least favorite pest is Dinoflagellates, as they caused me to break my tank down my first tank and recure (dark cycle) the rock for months while introducing LFS rubble and live sand (which anecdotally, did solve my issue).
But, the one which gave me the most trouble is Booke. I had an out break last year that wiped out my entire fish population, either from the disease exposure or to me being inexperienced with treating something as harsh as Formalin.
I've got a bigger one ready to go. Purchased it in Feb of this year and it's been taunting me!!
Bubble algae isn’t a pest in a macroalgae tank… right? Right? For real it’s out of control in my tanks too. Gotta get some more macros in there to outcompete them.
Dang, I love this angle! lol.
Had same problem until I got a rabbit fish. Doliatis, not spelled correctly .
I might grab one of those for the new tank for algae control.
At the “big store” emerald crabs are 9.99$, would need to spend maybe 100$ to have enough crabs to start mowing down on the bubble algae. Sheesh.
Not even sure that would work! lol
Finally found RFAs in Canada - rarer than hen's teeth and just as costly
Amphidinium dinos were my worst pest but my current one I have been fighting is some sort of spongy red macro algae that I can't get a good id on and nothing will eat it and tank is a nano so no tangs for me. Lol run on sentence for sure.
The run on sentence is totally needed when venting! I get it! lol
Glad everything is ok in the family.
But seriously, who’s going to buy all that bubble algae?
I mean, I just fragged it all up for someone! I'm sure macro algae people would love it....lol!!!
Don't give up I solved my massive bubble algae problem with a Fox face fish
I just feel like the tank is too small for a fox face...maybe a baby?
Yeah, they are a pain in the butt for sure. I hate that thing sting other corals too!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral absolutely, they block some of the growth of my corals plus these are some aiptasia on steroids, massive with long tentacles nut some cute tiny babies.
How big is your new tank?
It's a 65 AIO. I'm really wanting something 200+ but not sure if we are going to be in this house for the long haul. Reluctant to set up the big one until we know we'll be somewhere for longer.
What glass scraper are you using?
Seachem algae scraper! I love it!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Thank you 🙏
you should talk about bubble algae propagation :D:D:D
Wanna buy a frag? lol
Those things love to ruin a good rock scape. lol.
BamahamaLamahama
sorry to hear about your daughter’s appendicitis. but the bubble algae may have already been in there for months until it found an opportunity to explode in bigger numbers. may have to do a few water changes, check those nitrates again, reduce the lighting, and so forth. remy knows the deal
Exactly. This is a product of distraction in my life. Not enough time for maintenance over time and BOOM. Bubble algae explosion.
good video tnx
Thanks for watching!
Have you tried using green crabs?
little sails the stay in the rocks they are tiny spears i forget what they are called but it was everywhere
The frags shows never come to Jacksonville fl
I got a tank like that lol, Algae kills more coral and faster than any pest. Well maybe not so much for soft coral. Any tank is savable lol.
You need sea urchins “tuxedo don’t work as hard but are better behaved, pin cushion are work horses but move things and carry corals” urchins really grind down your rocks and keep them clean. And order like 200 snails turbos are work horses and astrea keep clean around corals.
I've never gone down the urchin route but I'm certainly into trying!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral all urchins have different work ethics and attitudes lol
.
Tuxedo is the safest but also has the worst work ethic, better for small tanks.
Pin cushions are algae warriors but they WILL pick up every coral they find 😂
Long spine is my favorite but the most dangerous. They are very hungry and get very big. Wen there food runs out they will eat things like Leptoseris and psammacora if not fed.
A self cleaning tank needs a billion herbivores lol
I have a urchin of some kind in every tank, and the ones that still get algae get a billion snails and tanks with Zoas get hermit crabs or emerald crabs to get the goodies in the crevices.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I have a 25g lagoon tank with one pink pin cushion urchin and he keeps it 100% spotless you can not find algae. There is also a couple hermits and a diamond goby to keep sand clean. Diamond gobies are sand cleaning warriors lol
No! I literally lost $1500 Can as you know on a heat issue, suck it up, I did and now have all new anemones being delivered on Wednesday
My least favorite is green hair algae, but I have had bubble algae. Just have to work on the tank, it will come around.
GHA is bad too!
I beat bubble algae with vibrant every 3 days till gone it took me 3 weeks to kill now I just dose every other week and still weekly water changes. I have a nuvo 60 IM AIO tank.
Nitrate:
Bubble Algae? Get an Emerald Crab or three. They suck em up like candy.
I think 50 might help...lol
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Mechanical cleanup first (face it, when the tank is coated, you won't get anywhere with cleanup crew), maybe rebuild the rockscape to be more 'airy' (smaller rocks, for example) so you won't have areas with dead flow.
Then, in the new attempt, I'd say 1 Emerald Crab per 30 liter (should be 9 gallons?).
Dino’s have been by far the worst for me, wiped out every sps coral in my tank, now converting everything to soft/lps
Dino's are tough because most of the time it's a waiting game. I threw everything in the book at mine.
thats abroad in japans intro music lmao
It's what?! I just loved the 80's vibe.
Remi no don’t sell , I will go to where you are and help you clean it up
slime algae is my nemesis
