I agree with Sherry. Besides the issue of privacy, the biggest EVIL of Facebook and other SNS is that they treat users as their products - by selling our personal/location info to advertising companies, WITHOUT our consent (or by making us take this for granted as if it's no big deal)
Aha..but the point of facebook is to urge us to publish more and more info on it..even things that we regarded as personal. Facebook is urging a transparent society, where each of us has NO privacy.
I am using technology on a daily basis and I agree with Sherry's view. How can a transparent society be safer if your personal info can be easily exploited for less than noble purposes? A healthy society is one that everyone respects the privacy of others.
Civilization is the progress of a society towards privacy. The savage’s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting people free from people. Universally public life eventually would lead to mob rule or dictatorship.
The point here that is ignored is the element of 'free' service. In order to have 'free' admission to facebook, people are paying with their privacy. They know that the thing is being paid with by advertisements. Therefore they are not as innocent as Dr. Turkle suggests here. The 'free' ideology as described by Chris Anderson will need a shocking event (As in Naomi Klein) before it can be reversed - and this will happen - but this event will cause a lot of pain.
wow... reading some of the comments posted here scares the living crap out of me. People know nothing about their psychology, living by simplistic thoughts like "I'd rather expand than contract", and completely ignorant of how much information corporations like Facebook have on them that they haven't directly given to them. GOD HELP US ALL
You could say they're selling us to each other, as products. I signed up to Facebook so I could connect with someone specific across the country. Facebook made me a product. And what is another person's Facebook feed REALLY? A software extension!
No, I'm dismissing you because we both know that fundamentally we're not on the same page. You were the first one to announce it. And believe me, as foolish (or whatever adjective you'd choose) as you think I am, I'm certain that you are. Also, text communication on the Internet is pathetic. And it's sad if you believe what you THINK you're reading. Just by this conversation so far you should know misinterpretation is a common thing. I don't want to argue with YOUR shadows.
What an ancient view! A transparent society leads to a safer, healthier humanity. "Perceived privacy" is lingering from our past and "social norms" are relative. I do appreciate Sherry's view on putting our devices away while having a conversation in person (although we're in a transitional period and that will improve), but am tired of so many "experts" who don't use the technology causing such a stir. You are representing a distant past and are stymieing progress. Please stop.
I admire her stance on privacy, but she has some very closed minded ideas of how technology deters intelligence and dehumanizes society. I think she is one of those concerned parent conservatives who feels threatened by unfamiliar things. Well intended and often very correct but also often misdirected. Her 'Alone Together" Lecture was a sensationalized blame game on technology for what are really pre existing human flaws that were not created but rather exposed by technology.
I agree with Sherry.

I totally agree! Things have to change!

she's the most badass person ever
And a little while later, Google+ introduces the idea of 'circle networking' :)
Nope... I'm not having a youtube argument. It's SAD, it really is man. Go about your day.

Better check into her credentials, friend. You're way off base on this one.
