There is always something you can learn from his speeches. I remember one of his speech in SMU where he criticised the 4G leadership team as having similar backgrounds, which will make Singapore vulnerable as it will result in group think and lack of ideas in a crisis.
I personally think he is right. I came to that realization myself as well about the new group of ministers. As the saying goes, you don’t know what you don’t know.
Love his point on meritocracy. For those who are academic at young kids , they are better off in life as a whole in sg. Those who bloom later have a much steeper slope and some never ever make it
This is one of the best podcast episodes I have listened lately. So genuine, so bona fide. Truth. Thank you gents for this! I followed his mother's column writings on Zaobao. Her mum, a US-trained chemist, wrote many short stories about her life experiences. Again, this propensity of being apologetic while speaking the truth, is admirable and inspiring.
the guests on this show are phenomenal. it's getting to the point that Terence and Haresh will have to level up to get more out of the conversation. it's not easy, but maybe it can be done with more preparation time? three episodes a week is a lot and leaves little time for research and prep. I won't mind if the podcast is just one episode a week, if the quality of the interview can be even better. having these fantastic guests on the show is such a treat for the listeners/viewers.
What an interesting and remarkable gentleman and guest. I do love his insights in life as with his world views. His comments on the Singapore education on confidence is correct though I still have nightmares of when i was in the local SG system in which i am pleased has changed a lot. He did have an interesting comment of the "smug" Singaporean. Like SMU when i did do my university in International business in Australia, it was encouraged for us to do work experience in South East Asia /Asia rather than America , England / Europe etc as it was far more useful and relevant for Australia. I would like to have known more about S'pore's post colonial attitude. Anyway Ho Kwon Ping's view of business is pretty inspiring. The fundamental "raison d'etre" of business of business is to make a better world is a powerful statement but how do you execute this in reference to stokehold capitalism is a good question and challenge. He really is a badass!!
Really interesting to hear him point out the pitfalls of meritocracy. And he's right, we are so fortunate to have a competent and functioning government in Singapore. I don't always agree with them, but I'm glad we don't have so much political and societal unrest like some of our neighboring countries.
Him bringing up mortality is also me constantly thinking how limited time we have. And I always tell people around me, “I can’t do this (my work) alone and I can’t do this forever.” And this is why I am constantly trying to find and train others, to give others the opportunity whenever I see one open up.
Truly an enlightening talkshow! Most didn't understand Kwon Ping of yesteryear, and I didn't. So, I put on my earplugs to listen to dialogue. Kudos to Kwon Ping for his candid insights of his experience sharing. I am much older than Kwon Ping and he really articulated his thoughts with right prompting from YLB. I pass this video to my kids and grandkids. Thanks.
I haven’t finished listening to this but I’ve already gotten several profound insights and nuggets of wisdom! It’s a masterclass in critical thinking! I’ll be listening to it a second time!
So true. If any Singaporean is not happy with Singapore or has some grievances with the government, travel abroad or work abroad (but not as top management as you will be living the expatriate life overseas and will not have much local/ grassroots experience in the country). Then you will appreciate Singapore and the government more.
@audreychoong7323 What you are saying is that if the government is doing better than other countries, we can't be unhappy? We can't be unhappy with high costs of living?
As a Singaporean living in Shanghai, I can attest to the point that we appreciate Singapore more when we live in other countries. There’s a lot of talk on rising HDB prices, but when I tell my colleagues here how much HDB flats cost in Singapore, they are amazed by how ‘cheap’ they are. And this is despite median income in Singapore being significantly higher than in Shanghai. Elder care services are also very good, which I really appreciated as an overseas Singaporean. The support was critical in helping me cope with my deceased parents’ failing health a couple of years ago.
Hmm, wonder why youtube push this video during my channel surfing, BUT, what a BADASS interview with Ho KP of Banyan tree!!! Great job guys! LOVE IT! 👍💪💪😁
He is blunt but very right in the speech, absolutely right on spot on what the education system it was. Thankfully I think govt noticed that, and shifting away, and if we succeed in doing that, our next 50 years will definitely be very different from what sg is now..
HKP said "Meritocracy is the best system". This may or may not be true. But one thing for sure. Meritocracy is also Perceived in that we all know how many leaders get the job because of Cronyism, Connections and Kuanxi even if these do have some level of ability just like anyone has. In short, meritocracy is more a perception and concept than reality. How many rich man really succeeded on Pure Meritocracy?
Singapore will be better ruled by this highly intelligent cultured and visionary Mr Ho instead of stiff iron fisted lacking compassion sacrificing respect of human rights governance.
HKP will never publicly challenge the govt. Yes, he speaks his mind but that is all he will do. He prefers to stay by the sidelines. You will never see him carrying the torch and leading the charge against government policies. Running for president or political office is not in his DNA.
There is no perfect system and governmental systems like religion all have some good values. I fully support meritocracy but we also need a support system to make sure no one is left behind provided we can accurately identify and target those that government wants to support and make sure the people understand these policies and know where they stand. The worst thing we can do is to strip away the values and standards we have established in our education system just to cater to the masses or just to make all students and parents more comfortable with the progress of their child. We need benchmarks so others can aspire to achieve these high standards . We need high standards to make sure we progress and better ourselves and also to tell those who have fallen short of these standards to quickly catch up. We should not dismiss any achievement in education and say we ONLY need to take into account other easy factors or lower standards these standards and second chances can also lead to a successful career and a better life because in life there is no easy way out. . Every one knows that education is a great eradicator of poverty provided everyone has equal access and in Singapore everyone is given the same opportunity so it really all depends on how the young maximise these opportunities. Unlike the western and developed countries we do not have a social safety net that allows our people to take their time through trial and error drifting through life or be given to them ample opportunities to fail until they can succeed. How well we live in our retirement years is dependent on how much we can save during our working life especially in CPF. So the hard truth is the quicker you wake up to the fact that you have fallen behind and catch up the better your chance of success in life for you and your family. When you finally find that you have failed to catch up then you better hope that you fallen into the right category of "left behind" to be entitled to government support. Singapore has no place for welfarism because policies like universal wage system will destroy our country and people . We have no natural resources to fund them and if you tax the rich too much under the guise of common prosperity they are highly mobile and they will vote with their feet. The government needs to redefine the social norm and come up with ways where the people are less dependent on government and more dependent on themselves to discover themselves early and find the right pathway to success as early in life as possible because by the time you hit 50 it only gets more difficult with less opportunity to make mistakes and succeed.

Billionaires are quite pittiful too. They everyday live in their luxurious GCB and eat atas foods and enjoy anything money can buy. But in wee hours of the night, they sometimes cannot sleep knowing they , like the janitor, is also moving closer to their end of life every day. They have so much more to lose when the pass away. How can they handle such mental torture? Think of the 90% of their unused wealth they spend their whole lives accumulating . How to Let Go? Maybe the 90% can spoil their inheritees?
