I'm always constantly impressed that Martin is not only a talented musician, but that he also invents his own instruments, devises compositions for them, and, when needed, isn't afraid to trash his own work to find a better solution.
He's not a modern Mozart.
He's *the* modern Leonardo da Vinci. With an awesome crew of other Renaissance Artists and Inventors as his backing band.
your channel is like an engineer's festival, everyone comes to you to show off pieces of metal :-)
That's why it's one of the best channel on YT
And then to get them blessed by the angle grinder.
as a bassist and engineer, I feel ashamed that I haven't subbed or found this channel till now, you got a life long subber here!
I feel like this is exactly what DaVinci would be doing in modern times
DaVinci would be a programmer or working in CAD all day.
Honestly, Martin, I know you are worried about the MMX never finishing, but whenever you do a redesign to create a more reliable and cooler looking system, it always creates an incredibly valuable educational video! I've learned so much about engineering, from the importance of quality management systems, how to deal with redesigns (pain is temporary, glory is forever), and how a complex system can be split up and tackled in small parts. Even if it takes 10 years to finish the MMX, I'll love watching and contributing to the journey so much!
I know you want to finish the MMX so you can create something great, but please don't forget that the incredible documentation of the journey that you've produced in the mean time is probably a creation that will outlive any MMX concert (in my heart at least).
I think, when all is said and done about the MMX and it's first world tour over, they should create a real documentary out of all this footage.
That adorkable grin Martin gets on his face when the machine starts playing music is amazing to see as always.
I feel like this guy is building the first T-800 except it’s a musical instrument instead of a killing machine.
There is hope for humanity.
I just love how this guy just welds on his machine made mostly out of wood
he knows he should be careful and i'm sure if it went on fire it would be near impossible to regreate and really diffecult to tune it
And it's TIG. That isn't easy and as a CWI, he did a damn good job.
hahaha fearless
Just watching this get more and more completed is fantastic.
me watching every episode: I don't know what's he is doing but he IS doing something
I am also watching from the beginning, and I thought the machine will be built on few months. But the reality is a decade!
I first read this as:
"Just watching this get more and more complicated is fantastic."
It didn't seem like an odd or out of place comment at all...
@@imcuneo well that is true at the same time
@@imcuneo Oh I read that too x)) And then I read your comment
This guy will, one day, fit a whole orchestra in a marble machine.
Stop giving him ideas!
He's nearly there already...
Strings
Percussion
Just needs to have some woodwind ;)
He could do it, I don't think there is any doubt about that. But it would require that many redesigns and countless going back to fixing the previous problems that appear when he is testing the next new instrument, that machine wouldn't ever get "ready".
That version will be MM Mach X (ten).
I mean, a mechanical woodwind instrument is basically an organ at that point
Loved the feature of the music at 15:18 in the current video ❤
True craftsmen in every sense of the word, everything from woodworking, metal fabrication, welding, etc.
Building hand crafted machines to play makes for an awesome skill set. Creators like these guys are a dying breed for the most part, where most of the world have decided if you can't buy it at a store, it can't exist, these guys prove, if you can imagine something, and are good at working with your hands, you can create practically anything.
Does anyone else almost cry every time the MMX plays something vaguely musical?
I do!
Me too
Nero Nyte I didn’t almost, I actually did when the Prelude came on. All these elements of painstaking engineering and complexity, assembled to their culmination, faded away and produced simple beauty.
I love this Asmr type video. No commentary, just gold old mechanical noises
I thought I was gonna be able to put this on while I continued to work. 18 minutes later still mesmerized and no work done.
@@streetskatedave I often do this with channels like these. Who are we kidding really, lol
I like it especially because I know Martin only makes them when he's really satisfied with something instead of frustrated.
For me, who has a hard times changing a light-bulb, this is so soothing to watch...
Maybe one day in schools we will talk about Wintergatan and the marble machine as we talk today of Mozart and Beethoven. What level of genius is this guy... this is crazy.
If my bloodline lasts long enough for it, I'd love it if my great great great whatever kids were taught about this man and his machine.
His name is Bach Einstein DaVinci I think 🤔
Shoutout to Hannes and Marius! The editing in this video is on point!
Yes my brother
Nice disclaimer inside the cigar box: "Not angle grinder proof"
well, it seems like hardly anything on this project is.
My first thought: Oh no he is going to take the angle grinder to those beautiful machines parts, isn’t he?
One grinder wasn't enough this week, a whole complement was needed.
Think he's had it out in the garden this week too, he was showing us at the start.
1:28 for those that are interested, but not enough to go hunt it down :)
What where those, um, flowers that came with it?.....
@wintergatan, please release the audio test from 11:48 to 16:30 on spotify! I keep coming back to this, it is so relaxing!

Definitely the only youtube series that I wait impatiently for every week.
I really like how he solves his problems. He lists the problems in order, and then tries to fix them one by one. I wish I had the thought process of this genius.
Watching your older video's doesn't feel right anymore hahaha.
I prefer you talking passionately how you explain what you make from start to finish of the video.
I'm glad this channel improved so much and I'm glad I could watch this series.
I can never get enough of the look on Martin's face whenever a step in the project goes well. It's like free serotonin.
There is a moment when Martin plays the bass and stops looking at it critically like something's gonna explode, and instead takes a moment to enjoy what progress has been made. And suddenly... this genuine smile creeps on his face, and he kinda loses it for a second. That was wonderful to see. Made me beam with a smile too -- Martin, you've come so far! There's still a long way to go, but you're rolling that damn rock over that mountain some day, you mark my words!
Shrooblord Nice comment! Liked it.
Well said, my friend-o!
Also hi :>
The coolest part of this whole journey is the inclusion of others. And what everyone has to offer. This is truly Martin's vision but it is beautiful to experience the ecosystem created in the development of the MMX. So cool!!
It's satisfying to watch the work be done with no words or anything included. Nothing to muck up the sound of hard work.
"Design is temporary. Grinder is forever."
Love it

Our children in the US don't even get to touch these instruments today. When I was in it high we had access to wood and metals lathes etc. Your work proves what we should be doing.
When this video came into my feed it read "16 seconds ago..."
yet there are already 35 comments, and now 600 views in less than a minute. Never been this early before, and this is impressive.
In fact this video was impressive, I really enjoyed it. Great job to Martin, Richard, and Ace!
Patreons get early access I think, so that would explain your findings...
So Martin has like 2 personalities in his videos: the one where he barely talks at all and everything goes perfectly and the one where he speaks and things tend to go wrong
When he's silent, he's letting his work do the talking. When he speaks, he's trying to distract us from the fact that one more thing on the machine is getting the angle grinder treatment.

Martin: "I think I want to ad a Hurdy-Gurdy real quick!"
Would be possible, but then should be played manually, or limited like the cyberbase. Also it would be probably be driven by a link to the crank so I don't think it would fit the idea of the marble machine as no marbles can be part of it.
Would love to see Martin play a Hurry Gurdy tho
Yes we need the Hurdy gurdy in there, or Martin playing it.
Cowbell, it needs more cowbell......and maybe a Tesla Coil.
A gurdy would be cool, but then he needs to invent a variable speed drive for it since a lot of the sound is from the speed and rhythm of the crank.

Have you tried lubricating the rails ? I'm not an expert but I feel like they shouldn't make that noise
They are under pressure with his stainless steel thingd
@martin If you're reading this, use PTFE spray as dry lubrication, not oil. This wont become dirty overtime.
I've used lots of linear rails in industrial settings. Rest assured that those in the video can run many kilometers under the light loads they'll see without lubrication. If the noise is a problem, they're nearly silent when greased, we use THK AFB-LF lithium grease. However, the grease is trapped in the ball bearings by the optional wipers, which add considerable static friction to the assembly. Not a problem if you're running them with a motor or hydraulic cylinder, but could be a problem for actuating by hand.

Martin, I have been following your progress on this project from the beginning and this is the first time I have ever commented on one of your videos. You last previous video about the marble divider re-work had a lot of doom and gloom vibe that you feel like you'll never finish.
