  • In this episode, I show how I use credit cards to get free food and free money simply by paying my bills. Being frugal doesn't mean you shouldn't use your credit. I buy everything with my credit card and then pay the bill in full each month. This simple tactic brings me a steady stream of income from the credit card companies.
Also included in this episode Is a simple recipe for VENISON BURRITOS as well as my weekly Q&A. Enjoy.

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:

    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

Loved the interaction with Frankie and You at the start of this video, it was wonderful. I'm sure he loved it too.
Yes, I'm a animal lover, I have 2 Doberman Pinschers that mean the world to me and I to them. But please remember that I understand the importance of gathering food where it presents itself. Protein is a vital necessity to the human body, without it we can not function properly. I believe we should also eat the cleanest form of foods possible, and eating something right off the hoof is perfect. Happy hunting, looking forward to seeing that rack. I enjoy your videos, learn so much from them, thanks so much for sharing!

Anyone who has trouble digesting burritos made with flour, you can use Coconut Moringa Wraps. They are delicious and have no flour or other grains in them. They don't taste like coconut. They just taste delicious and help you feel better. Happy snacking.

I also love the insurance on products, you purchased, I just moved in a new province and it is just not feasible to ship all your stuff from one province to another. I donated to charity most of my stuff and shipped the rest. Now i spent thousands on furniture and if there is a defective product, I have insurance, plus double the air miles points. Great VIDEO, P.S. I purchase a 1000 sqft home with 67 acres of forest. Have a great day

Wise words about credit cards, Boss! Yes, you do cook retried beans twice. First you cook a pot of pinto beans in boiling water seasoning the to your preference. When they are completely done you mash them with a potato masher, put them in a little oil and fry them. They are better than the ones in the can! Laurie throw something next time he tells about the dishes! lol! 😁. Great video, as always! All the best!

    • @ShadowPoet
      @ShadowPoet 4 роки тому

I think he was being facetious on that lol. When you "boil" them first time around, its not really "re"frying them is it 😂... refried actually is just a bastardization of the spanish word "refritos" which means "fried well" 🤤🤯

  • @billlaut608
    @billlaut608 5 років тому +24

Hello Boss: Seeing the can of commercially-package refried beans in your video, being the canning maven I cannot let that pass by uncommented upon! So, if you don't mind, this is how I can up Refried Beans for my food pantry. And I'll add that the single most expensive item is the pinto beans, which for me are about $1.00/pound, but if you go to an Amish store you can buy them for WAY cheaper than that! And with that, here's how I do it. (This recipe produces 24+ quarts of refried beans.)
I soak abut 12 to 15 pounds of pinto beans in the refrigerator for two to three days, until they are fully rehydrated. When they're ready to go, I put my two Presto 23-quart pressure canners on the stove, so I can process 12 quarts at one time.
I like a subtle hint of bacon flavor in my refried beans. If you don't want it, then skip this step. But I have a tub of something called "Bacon Base." This is the stuff a commercial kitchen would use to make a bacon-flavored stock.
Because it's concentrated, I take one teaspoon of Bacon Base and dissolve it in one cup of warm water. Set it aside.
    1) Into each jar I first put TWO level cups of soaked beans.
    2) Next, I add the following:
    a) 1/8-cup finely diced white onion
    b) 1/4-teaspoon minced garlic
    c) one teaspoon, canning/pickling salt (You can substitute whatever you want; the canning salt I always have on hand.)
    d) one teaspoon of the bacon base solution (optional if you don't want the hint of bacon flavor)
    e) one tablespoon of the melted lard
    f) 1/4-teaspoon of Wright's Liquid Smoke. (Wright's is the good stuff. Please don't substitute.)
    3) Add a THIRD LEVEL CUP of soaked beans.
    4) Controversially, shake the jar to get the beans to settle, and then cover with bean water ONLY TO COVER THE BEANS! Don't overfill with water or you'll get soupy beans!
    5) Wipe the rim with a damp cloth, put on a lid and tighten finger-tight.
    6) When all 12 quarts are done, put the lids on your pressure canners and process for 90 minutes.
The beans will cook perfectly during the processing time. Take them out and let them seal as they cool down.
This is what they'll look like when done: www.flickr.com/photos/8991102@N07/33023094731/in/dateposted-public/
The beans will expand during their processing time to absorb the water. When you go to serve them, simply empty the jar into a pot, and while heating them mash them with a potato masher. You CANNOT mash them first before processing because of heat penetration issues. The beans MUST be processed whole, as shown.
And for people concerned there's not enough water in the jar, I've been doing this for a number of years, and have had beans in the pantry for up to one year without any problems. But, your mileage may vary so to each their own.
This week I'm putting away 24 quarts of Meatballs in Marinara Sauce, for spaghetti dinners this winter. Then I have 24 servings of White Chili to finish, and then get started on this year's Refried Beans. Next month it'll be Meatloaf, Potatoes, and Mushroom Gravy, Three-Bean Chili, Chicken Veggie Soup, and other good eats.
All the best to you, Lori, Frankie, and Tildy!

@@eleanorkerby I'm also adapting a spanish rice recipe from Chef John to compliment the beans. It's a pint of Spanish Rice Concentrate. You empty it into a pot, rinse the jar out with 1/2-cup of water, then add the rice and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Yum!
The secret is to use onion powder instead of raw onions. That reduces the processing time to only ten minutes, which in turn helps to prevent the spices from being destroyed during an otherwise extended processing time.

I bought my pick-up truck with a credit card....... then transferred the balance to a new "
no-interest for 1year" credit card. I kept track of when the interest was going to begin and transferred again to another new credit card. I did this for about 3 years and didn't have to carry Full Coverage insurance on the truck(big savings), saved a bunch because of NO INTEREST charge on card. So the truck was bought / purchased interest free over a 3 year period. That was about 15 years ago and I had bought an old 1979 truck. Now, I use my Costco card to buy EVERYTHING and after the membership fee, I clear about $250 a year in returns. I also pay off all credit card debt every month.... just like you. I LOVE saving money but I also enjoy a splurge every now and then like on a nice restaurant meal or hiking/biking/fishing gear. Thanks for videos.........This one was a very good one........ Good credit card advise. I too use my credit card for everything I can and always pay in full and never pay interest. I also get Cash Back from my credit card. Some of my utilities allow auto credit card payments and I do that. All of my home, auto, boat, motorcycle insurance allows auto credit card payments and I do that also. Then, I have my credit card payment automatically drafted from my checking account so I don't waste a stamp and that keeps me from accidentally missing mailing my payment timely.
That said, I know using a credit cards makes me spend more money than I should, so everyone should use caution. I'm 62 yrs old and I have spent my whole life penny pinching so I would have some money in retirement. That is why I can now go spend a little money and do things I enjoy. I still watch and manage my money. Good Video!

I've used credit cards that way for many, many years. I just purchased new windows all around for my house. I had saved the money but I paid with my credit card resulting in a couple of hundred dollars in points. I then paid the credit card bill before the end of the month. Pretty slick and a perfect example of common sense which, as my wife tells me, I appear to be lacking in. ;-)

I use an amazon credit card as well. I buy everything I can on amazon, including a lot of food stuffs, as long as it’s the cheapest option. I pay it off every month and I get 5% back. We also pay no shipping and very rarely pay tax on the amazon purchases. I use a Murphy oil credit card for diesel and gas, I pay it off every month and get 5% back. As well Murphy has the best prices in town. We use credit card to buy local groceries and items, we pay it off every month and get 5% back. I shop at Lowe’s for hardware and lumber and get a 10% veterans discount. We could pay cash for everything but as you say, using the cards and paying them off gets us free money. It’s a no brained.

Just because you don't pay them interest, the CC companies are still making money every time that you use it. It's called "merchant fees", averaging about 1.5%. These fees are passed on to consumers, as a cost of doing business.
Other perks, like cash rewards cards for example, utilize the interest the other people pay to pay for these things.

Have you ever wondered what happened to all the mom and pop full serve gas stations? Well I can give you a clue. They were just trying to make a living doing what they loved doing ,serving their customers. I run a full serve gas station and I'm struggling to keep it open. I can't afford help anymore so I'm working all the hours myself. The margins on gas for the owner are terrible at roughly 5-6% gross. If some one pays with a credit card 3% of that is gone in bank and credit company charges. Please think about that when you pull out your credit card, especially if you want the little man to survive. Thankyou

Ha, Texas girl can tell you that yes, they get "fried". You take the pinto beans, mash them up, and in an iron skillet with a small dollop of hog lard as the frying agent (you don't want much just a little) then you put in the bean mash and cook it till it's thickened. Voila refried beans. You also use spices and sometimes peppers etc too, but I was focusing on the true mechanics of the "fry" that a Mexican friend told me was how to make the beans. The griddle method is the "correct" way to seal the burrito too. Sending love from Texas...

This is so funny - in November I discovered I was getting 1% back on cc purchases and moved all my monthly bills to cc which I pay off several times a month. Now in January I'm watching this video. Great video because it's free money and can buy (for my bills) something reasonably expensive at the end of the year - for me, will be tools and supplies.
Bingeing on these videos, they are great, thank you!

It’s amazing- your logic and common sense way of approaching life is such a simpler recipe- one that was very common many years ago in this country...yet your ability to use technology and your artistic ability to edit and provide such top notch content- it’s such a paradox and you make it seem so easy.
I wish UA-cam had not become such a slippery slope for all of you that work so hard to provide such wonderful content.

    I'll start by saying...
I've been following you for years. I really appreciate you videos and your back woods logic...
I may have missed it but I didn't hear anything about how soon to pay off your credit card bills other than at the next billing.
I want to add that most credit cards charge interest from the day you make your purchase up to the day they receive your bill payment. The only way to totally avoid interest is to immediately send a payment for the amount of your purchase. The easiest way I have found, is if your bank has some kind of online bill pay. Just set up your credit card payment with them and if you have a banking phone app you don't even have to wait until you get home to take care of it. That's what I've been doing. I even try to keep a positive balance on my cards as a buffer. Kind of like a bank account.
Like the Boss says... If you're in debt, get out of debt and stay out of debt. Life is so much simpler and less stressful...
You will be able to live with far less income and you'll weather hard times much better.
However, While times are good. Use your excess income to pay down you mortgage if you have one. Or just save so you have several months of living expenses covered as an income buffer.

"The only way to totally avoid interest is to immediately send a payment for the amount of your purchase." If this is how your card works, you should get rid of it. I've been playing the card game for decades. I make my purchases and when the bill comes in, I pay it. In over 20 years I've never paid one single cent in fees of any kind. If I paid my bill late, that would be a different story but I don't. One of my cards has 490.00 worth of free shopping that I can do. I love it :-)

Good advice my friend. When I was single, a credit card was a temporary help when my furnace quit! The card was a pre-approved loan at an interest rate I had agreed to. That said, the quicker to pay it off >> the better! Now I pre-load a card through my bank to buy on Amazon Prime. Just exactly what I had planned to purchase. Anyone tries to mess with my card on-line, there isn't much in that account. I'm glad you are ahead to pay off your cards monthly. It is a good/common sense plan. I just bought chicken on sale and vacuumed sealed it :-). $20.00 will half fill my Tacoma. Love venison. Great video!

You always give good advice - IF only everyone lived their life with your philosophy. It doesn't look like you listen to the radio or TV much - but I can tell you that around here, in the city, we get tired of hearing all the ads by shysters/or law firms (like Dewey, Cheatem & Howe) advertising every way to Sunday to get you out of your credit debt. They advertise something like, "don't let anyone tell you that you have to pay off that credit card debt you racked up; NO, we can help you", or same with the back taxes, those critters are out there advertising, "don't let anyone tell you that you have to pay all those back taxes, NO, we can help you" - etc., etc. Makes those of us who pay our bills and pay our taxes sick. But, that being said, there are people out there like you and us who buy what we need and pay off the balance when the statement arrives. Good policy. Small word about all those cash backs: we know two great people who own restaurants. Independents - not chains. They showed us their bank statement at the end of the month, that lists all the customer credit card charges for eating at their restaurant. Now, as an independent (not a chain), they did not give the bank authorization to give the customer a 'cash back' reward. And it isn't the bank that is giving the cash back. No. The bank takes it upon themselves to not only charge a fee to the restaurant owner for the convenience of the owner to allow customers to use their credit card, but there's also a separate charge, percentage, the bank issues to the owner so the bank can then give it to their customer, using said issued credit card. Not fair, but the owner can't do much about it if he wants his customers to continue eating there and allowing them to use their credit cards. It's a kick in the butt, for sure to an independent trying to make a profit. Big retailers and chains - they can afford it. I get that. But the smaller guys - it just hurts their bottom line. I know, I know, I rattled on way too long. We love you. Have a great weekend. Loved the burritos part - you know how to make good, simple food. XOXOXO

When we ran our food business, we didn't take plastic. All businesses have that option.

    • @kefirheals7383
      @kefirheals7383 5 років тому

So true - So true. Here in the city, it's the wonderful world of plastic. Rare to see people pay cash. All the add-on fees the banks impose are chalked up to the cost of doing business. I'm not faulting you for taking advantage of using plastic and getting rewards. I'm at odds with the banks that feel they can call impose additional fees to the business owners. You'd be crazy to not take advantage of it. I totally get it.

One correction - CC companies make a few percent on every purchase, so they do make money from your purchases, even though you pay no interest. But I agree with you. I use CCs too. The consumer protection associated with CCs is amazing. And I get 1% back as well.

I use my credit card the same way 👍👍. Best thing you can do. In the last 13-14 years I’ve already collected $2,350 in Sears gift cards. I have over 50k points right now, so that’s another $500. I’d just cash out the points when I needed something. Once, had a $1,000 card and bought a pressure washer, outdoor patio set, and new garage door opener. Everything was on sale, so was $1,053 instead of $1,553. Used my gift card and only paid $53 for $1,553 in products. Had a $750 card I used for a $1,400 television (not including tax), but it was on sale for a Black Friday special, so I ended up paying $68 out of pocket. Savings of over $2,900 right there and that doesn’t include the other $600 in cards I got or the points I still have. If you work those credit cards the right way it really pays off!!

Same here Boss and like you I pay off the balance every month we never ever have paid interest on anything except our mortgage which we paid off 10 years early. Another good thing about using a credit card you have more recourse to dispute the charge, with a debit card you have less chance of that happening. Plus with our Credit card we have not had to buy a plane ticket in over 15 years except for the 25 dollars nominal fee. God bless Boss and your better half.

You're the Boss of the credit card! Only disadvantage I see to your strategy is that sometimes you have alternatives to paying list, retail with a credit card. Often times, you can get a significant discount for paying cash. Should have asked the body shop what discount they would offer for cash. What's in it for the credit companies when you never pay interest? They are getting you ready for a cashless society....
