    OHMYGOD HEY!
Earlier this week I was so excited to be invited to the Almeida Theatre in London to see the opening night of TAMMY FAYE, a new musical based on the notorious televangelist Tammy-Faye Bakker.
The show is written by Elton John, Jake Shears and James Graham and stars Katie Brayben and Andrew Rannells.
Check out today's new review vlog for my full thoughts on this intriguing new musical.

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it- I do feel it has gone through some changes during its previews and might again should it transfer. Personally I found the slow realisation of the darkness really intense and very aptly paralleling the political climate in the US right now with a creeping sense of what the other members of the electric church want to do and how much power they have to do it. I think as a woman it’s a more realistic portrayal of losing rights/power than one big reveal

I’m seeing it on Wed and I was pleasantly surprised that it involving Elton John and Andrew didn’t mean it costing hundreds of pounds, so that’s a plus so far haha

I saw this in previews without realising it was previews, and thought it was amazing! Never thought I'd get the chance to see Andrew Rannells live in the UK. The Almedia seems like it's doing fantastic things, I'd love to go back. The fact that it is such a small theatre makes it feel so much more special.

I got to what turned out to be the first preview. It needed some cutting but the cast is stellar. I think I benefit by being an American with a knowledge of the characters and the truly pernicious effects some of them had on my country

I really appreciate your very insightful review of TAMMY FAYE: A New American Musical. I'm looking forward to seeing it in November at the Palace Theatre on Broadway.
I am deeply grateful that you spoke about the way the show's Creatives handled LGBTQ issues, and the way Tammy Faye reached out to, as she put it, "a patient of AIDS ". In fact, the ONLY "patient of AIDS" who was courageous enough to agree to a live, satellite TV interview with Tammy Faye Bakker in front of 20 million conservative Christian viewers was Openly-Gay Pastor-with-AIDS-Steve Pieters! Because Steve Pieters outlived Tammy, SURVIVING 41-more-years from the time he fell ill, I eventually had the honor and privilege to be counted as one of Steve's many caregivers.
On that note, I want to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to the very kind, ASHLEY CAMPBELL (who portrayed Steve Pieters in TF), and, to Olivier Award-winner JAMES GRAHAM, the two of whom (along with Olivier Award-winners Katie Brayben, Zubin Varla, and Tony/Olivier nominee, Andrew Rannells), gathered the ENTIRE TAMMY FAYE cast on the marvelous Bunny Christie set to send STEVE PIETERS a spirited and cheerful get-well video greeting in Nov., 2022. Steve was THRILLED!
Steve Pieters, who, 37-years after his historic interview with Tammy Faye, was very much alive during the Almeida Theatre run, while Ms. Brayben and Mr. CAMPBELL recreated a snippet of that historic interview eight times a week. (In real life, that Nov. 15, in 1985, Steve was very much isolated in a darkened TV studio, way outside of Los Angeles, but thousands of miles away from Tammy Faye, with just an earpiece, and unable to see Tammy Faye at all. He could only hear her.) Fast forward to Nov. 2022, unfortunately, because Steve was battling, yet again, another stage IV cancer - it proved to be his final battle - he could not travel to the UK to see the production. But Messrs. Campbell & Graham, and the Company of TF more than made up for it by sending Steve ALL THAT LOVE across The Pond. And, it didn't end there, as Steve shares in his posthumously published memoir, Sir Elton John called Steve at his home a month later. Talk about good Rx!!!
In a video interview with Steve, posted to the Almeida Theatre website, Ashley Campbell quotes Ms. Brayben, "If it wasn't for Steve Pieters, we wouldn't have this show; this musical wouldn't be happening."
There is so much more to the story of Tammy Faye Bakker Messner, who can really say?
I look forward to more of your theatre reviews.

I have tickets to see it in November. I'm very excited, mostly because Andrew Rannells is one of my favorite actors and I've never had a chance of seeing him live before but generally seeing musicals live is exciting as someone who lives in a country where musical theatre doesn't really have a culture

Saw it last week. Agree with your review (I also made the Stars/Javert comment to my friend regarding the Falwell solo). That solo stopped the show as did two of Katie’s Act 2 numbers. I love Andrew Rannells but feel that he was vocally underused. I loved his acting in the dramatic scene, but where was the showstopping song to dramatize those feelings?

This might not be a perfect musical, but this sounds a level of blasphemous catharsis that my ex-vangelical heart desperately needs (American right wing evangelical upbringing). And honestly, the fact that Elton John did the songs at all fills me with such maniacal glee; I bathe in the tears of homophobes.
Although honestly, I was sold as soon as you said "Andrew Rannells as Jim Bakker." Rannells is amazing in general, but that is PEAK casting right there.
I hope I get the opportunity to see it. Maybe if it makes a Broadway or off-Broadway transfer; I have been wanting to do a New York trip at some point.

I was fairly luke warm on the show outside of the phenomenal lead performance. My main problem was the treatment of Jim Bakker's rape of Jessica Hahn - the show presents it as if the encounter was consentual, only uses Jessica as a means to further Tammy's downfall, and ultimately redeems Jim (the final number literally has the lyrics "what's done is done, I'll see you in heaven"). It all left a terrible taste in my mouth. Refusing to accurately display such a big detail, and explore its ramifications, semmed wrong. These people ruined so many lives - maybe have a moment to show that pain, and sit with that complexity, rather than a broad, formless message of "love is good"? Perhaps not the best story to be told by a production team of 4 old men.

Would love to see this. I was thinking this story would make a great musical. We used to watch "The 700 Club" (their evangelistic tv show) when I was in college and laughed at her many tears and gargoyle make-up (and Jim's extremely apparent insincerity in prayer). But years later she was on a reality show where minor celebrities lived together like "Big Brother", and she became best friends with porn star Ron Jeremy. It was actually very sweet. Now I have seen the documentary and Jessica Chastain film and would definitely look forward to the musical coming to the US!

It seems quite divided whether it is a good or bad musical, I personally despise, but aside from the point. I thought it would be interesting to see your thought on it.

I saw the matinee today and I have to say that I agree with many of the things you talked about. I have to say that I was surprised by what you thought of the book, as I feel that it's probably what was the most problematic. It's a very confused piece of writing and it seems to me that they didn't know where and what the drama is and it seemed as if they couldn't decide what the genre is. It was drama in one scene, a musical comedy in another, then a pastiche musical and then an 80's rock flick. Plot-wise they tried to cram in so many parts of her life but never committed to any of them. I have many things to say about the show but she is by far the best thing in the show. She's just jaw-dropping. What I really hated (and I'm sorry for using the H word) was that last song. I mean... what was all that about? Its a REALLY strange way to finish the musical. It felt like the Joseph megamix and undermined all the drama that happened before it. It also undermined the bows completely. I feel that the only reason they did it that was was because they wanted to let the audience leave the theatre on an uplifted high. And it was kinda gross, actually. Because they didn't need it. The ending was strong enough. If they really wanted to have that last song they should have staged it completely different with her introducing everyone (as Tammy Faye) and include all the bows or something on that line. It's a missed opportunity.

I saw it and probably enjoyed it more than you, but my biggest issue with the show was the characters played by Amy Booth-Steel and Richard Dempsey. Yes they're giving great comedy, but their characters are way too broad for this, verging on slapstick. Their 2nd act number wasn't needed and went on too long. For some reasom it reminded me of a song from Betty Blue Eyes. With regards to wanting some sort of reveal or change to happen suddenly when it came to an end, it would need the script to support that, but i think the end was well signposted, with the IRS, construction issues, mounting debts etc that it wasnt really that sudden and didnt warrant a coup de theatre type moment.

So when did John (who continues on his years-long farewell tour) take time to work on this? And did he make himself available to tweak the music during previews? As musicals go, I've only ever *loved* his work on the Lion King; the scores for Aida, Billy Elliott, Lestat were adequate-yet-forgettable, but the songs for The Devil Wears Prada this summer just stunk. The rumors from the team working here in Chicago for Prada's pre-Broadway try out suggested that John was just not engaged at all, that he swept in one day and charmed everyone, then disappeared again, leaving it in the hands of the lyricist.

Poor Aaron, not being able to be your +1!!! Take him to it when it opens!! I know Kristin Chenowith has been working on doing a Tammy Faye musical for years, so am wondering if/when this inevitably comes to Bway, she will be cast. No offense, but doubt they'll import Katie, as she's not a name over here - and KC is, of course, Bway royalty.

I'd say that most people in the UK would say Crist-yan, or Crish-chen although the 'a' or 'e' is a 'schwa' sound - a vowel which doesn't quite match up to a/e/i/u. However, in the UK we would hear the term spoken much less frequently than in the US, so people might find their own way of saying it,

MickeyJo I'm the one who constantly comments on your eloquence and beautiful handling of the English language, your extensive vocabulary (I loved "commodified" the way you used it here), but you made a tiny mistake that has become rampant in popular culture, and it is unbecoming of your mastery..So, I wanted to tell you since I doubt you noticed it, and if I had done it I'd want someone to tell me. You were speaking of Tammy and Jim's TV show, and you said "The TV show that her and Jim had..." at 22:38 ....Now, I understand that you haven't written a script, you're speaking off the cuff, and we all make mistakes (I make many). But this is a habit that is popping up everywhere, and I will be brokenhearted if your beautiful diction is affected. "Her" is NEVER the subject of a sentence: "The TV show that her had been hosting..." is something you would of course never say, and yet you just did. If you take the other person's name out of the sentence it becomes simple to see the error: "Her had a TV show and her hosted it with her husband Jim." No, no, oh dear no.. "The TV show that SHE had been hosting" is of course the correct answer. Therefore, the sentence becomes: "The TV show that she and Jim had been hosting," or even "Jim and she," or even "The TV show that the two hosted together," anythingggggg but "her" in that situation. I'm sure you know this, and I'm sure you think I'm petty and mean since you did a 27 minute video with an excellent critique of a new show, and I'm going on and on about the word "her" being used as the subject of a sentence. But the reason is because I LISTEN TO YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR DICTION. I would listen to you describe a walk down Drury Lane [quick break to Wiki that, since I'm not sure why I chose it and my goodness it's interesting, I definitely would listen to you talk about it]. I adore not just your accent, but your choice of words, your view of things, your viewpoint, your opinion (for example that the LGBTQ characters were "commodified" in some cases, not a word I would think to use in that situation, but it was PERFECT and I completely understood what you meant because you CHOSE THAT WORD. So you see, this slight correction comes out of my ADORATION for your word choices. Maybe it doesn't feel that way at the moment. I'll shut up now.
