- The full version of this video has never been released so I put this together using just clips that have been shown on TV. It all fit together quite well once the clips had been AI upscaled and Colour graded. I had a go at removing the watermarks but it was a bit of a hassle so some can still be seen in a few places. Maybe I'll upload an improved/ extended version at some point.
Ricky is missing a trick here. If he re-released this now with all the 80s nostalgia it would probably make no.1
YES!! and there's a really good remix of it by Razormaid!!!
No.1 on the cringe charts
Absolutely! If somebody's gonna cash in on your past it might as well be you.
He makes fun of himself when he talks about this early career, but he's really good I reckon. His voice is great. It's totally 1983. ❤
I agree, the perfect example of 1983 music. If someone more famous had performed this it would have definitely been a top 10 hit.
Yeah there's nothing awkward, overly pretentious or naïve about this, it's completely legitimate for the early 80's.
David Bowie nicked all his stuff.
still play their songs hahaha
He has a Billy Idol kind of vibe!
The singer looks like someone that Ricky Gervais would mock mercilessly.
He said in a recent interview that people assume he's embarrassed now about how he looked then and he said "no! I'm embarrassed how I look now! People see the video of me then and ask "what happened mate" pizza and beer and not working out that's what happened'
@@kishab6759Brit toxic diet, I was right
@@kishab6759 Funny bc he looks the best he's ever looked recently
@@danielhall6888 He is getting cute again.
How did these guys not get further? It's really damn good.
More to Lose was no.1 in the Philippines.
Unironically if this was in Depeche Mode's catalogue it'd be a fan favourite.
Image matters.
He talked about Seona Dancing with the DM lads. Dave Gahan heard this song and liked it.
Absolute banger. With more radio play at the time, it would be a golden oldie now.
Now that the world knows about it, in 30 years it will be a golden oldie.
somewhere in the philippines their music is playing now. Seriously, they're classic oldies there.
Imagine a world where this became a hit, Seona Dancing was successful, and now Ricky is known more as a singer. Actually I'm surprised he hasn't used this for a story concept as a washed up 80s pop star attempting a comeback. He could use the video itself as the starting point since it is indeed him!
Seona Dancing were massive in The Philippines, apparently.
You just described the plot of "Music and Lyrics" with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.
But that’s exactly what David Brent is in The Office.
Have you heard of "Life on the road with David Brent", the movie that continues the story of his character from The Office? Cause that movie is exactly that, where he tries to reclaim his youth as a singer on tour. Though they didn't include this video to be fair.
"...hasn't used this for a story concept as a washed up 80s pop star attempting a comeback" Little modified, he has!
I came here to have a laugh and Im actually surprised by how good it is.
its so good!!
It's kind of funny to be attracted to a version of someone that hasn't existed for decades
he has existed for decades though.
not really most women are attrated to money and power, you are no different !
So true, I still think he's hot though lol
I know! I feel the same way about Al Pacino from the 1970’s!!
@@mcpartridgeboySo are men, so what’s your point?
Just waiting for him to burst out laughing and having to do the take for the 1000th time 😂
I was thinking the same thing 😂
I didn't think it was possible to love Ricky more ❤
Still incredibly furious people basically bullied Ricky out of pursuing his music career more. He was fantastic. Seona Dancing is still one of the greatest music losses we've had and I'm still not over it. I Tweet'd to Ricky a while ago telling him how great he was and hope that he knows there are people who support him. He liked the Tweet, so I hope he knows now that there are people who'd love to see him do this again.
If he was bullied out of music, it was pure jealousy! He was and is great but I'm sure no one wanted that voice as competition! Well thank christ the music is still out there for us to find and enjoy!❤
But, can he kick his height?
@@GooglSucksDiskI mean has he even been to Twiggy’s dance studio!?
@@GooglSucksDisk😂😂
Oh I don’t think Ricky is furious tho, he’s a multi millionaire and funniest man on the planet. He’s done ok unlike his most of his 80s music contemporaries
Young Ricky Gervais has Bowie vibes.
Bowie and David sylvian from Japan
@@meeshrosenberg1983 Absolutely Sylvian i agree.
Because he's intentionally aping him. Look it up.
God, he wishes. Pound shop Bowie with really bad teeth.
@Ruth Marks your teeth ain't all that sista!
This is Depeche Mode meets David Bowie.
Literally what I thought
With a bit of Gary Numan in for good measure
I said exactly the same thing!!!! AHAHAH
This is the bassline he gets the Office to sing when he does his excellent charity dance.
No, that's disco inferno
@@barringtonfisher87 oh shit it is
I would be really proud of this if I was Ricky. As a teen in the 80s, this and more to lose are great tunes.
He is! Just watched the Kelly Clarkson clip about the group, and they have a still of what he looked like in this band at 20, and he says, "People think i'm embarrassed what I looked like then, no, I'm embarrassed what I look like now. Beer and pizza."
Listened to this song 100s of times--still love it.
Ever since watching a video about Gervais' life, I became addicted to this song. It sounds like a mix of Bowie and Depeche Mode and it's great. Ricky could've had a future in the music industry.
If this was re released today, instant number 1. I'm impressed with his integrity that he hasn't done it, there's enough Ricky fans who would buy this because they're a fan of his comedy....😂
It was covered by another group and I don’t like the cover version .
Reminds me of Ultravox, Depeche Mode and Bowie. Wish he'd made more tunes like this. Good stuff!
What an artist! I wish he would've continued his music career
Same
Obsessed with this tune, I can't stop listening to it. Love it ❤
Me too
Wow.!! It’s hard to believe Rick had the potential to being a very good English pop star
He was 21 or 22 when this was filmed.
This one and even better: "More to lose". How the hell did Seona Dancing not become huge?!?! Great stuff, man!! 🤩
I was a teenager in the 80s in the middle of nowhere in the USA. I just saw something about this on Instagram so here I am and I’m like this is amazing and vaguely familiar. Maybe I heard it back then and forgot. I love it!
This song wasn’t a hit in the UK so it’s really unlikely it would have been played in the US in the 1980s but maybe it was somewhere.
This is amazing! I'm very surprised they weren't more successful. Good video, good song, great voice, very good looking front man. This should have been a hit.
I like that it's actually a good 80's tune.
He was basically a chilled out entertainer. He laid down some drum n bass shit, samplers and shit. They also supported a little known Scottish outfit .... called TEXAS
This could easily have been a number one in 1983 if it had been performed by a famous band.
And he could do what they did and they knew that, but I go hey don't slag em off.
@@sneakyalien101 Probably what spurred them on, in the end
Only heard of this now and im so surprised. Its so good. 80s at its best
Im a ricky fan since the office came out and i only found out about this now!!! Im gobsmacked at how good he was back then
Wow this is so good! Classic eighties sound. Ricky sounds a lot like Bowie!
Maybe more like David Sylvian, if you've ever heard him?
@@Hastur876 Rubbish he sounds more like Kevin Patterson of Fiction Factory.
actually he's a big Bowie fan
Proper reminds me of stuff like the cure and Bowie. Some of the goth pop stuff. Love it
Damn Ricky was 🔥. Looks and sounds so much like Bowie!
I think he's basing his voice on an early 80s singer called David Sylvian.
@@ajs41 Nope more like Kevin Patterson of Fiction Factory.
How is it that it didn't go a massive hit ? Ricky G. has such a sensual Bowiesque voice, looks smart, the tune is perfect. Great new wave song, better than many more successful at the time.
This song slaps
Great voice Ricky !
Damn! Ricky really had it going on.
Just shows to make it big youve gotta be in the right place and right time, the charts in the early 80s were full of this stuff
Bowie on wish !
“ is he avin a laugh ?
He’s avin a laugh “
This is actually good
Find myself returning to this song throughout the years much like today and it has to be said it’s an absolutely cracking track. Obvious Bowie inspired vocals with touches of Depeche Mode and OMD it’s a travesty it passed under the radar as it should rightfully be included on every Best of The Eighties playlist …
… me, I can still vaguely remember dancing to it at a friends disco aeons ago never knowing that years later the lead singer would be a global phenomenon following a cult TV show about life in an office and a cavalcade of insults aimed at over entitled Hollywood superstars!
This is what’s playing in the dark club of a vampire movie circa 1984
Did not expect it would be good.
Great song, good looking feller. It was the 80s. Nowt wrong with any of this.❤
Just to take the piss out of him this needs to be a Christmas Number One 😅😂
Ricky Gervais was a great singer
And he still is! The David Brent songs are pretty good! Love Ricky so much!
I really like this. I was totally into this kind of music back then.
They maybe did not make it in Britain since competition back then was insane, but Ricky's vocals are actually pretty decent, especially for this type of music, and music itself it catchy.
Although I wish they got more successful, who knows if we would have one of the best living stand up comedians(and be introduced to Karl Pilkington) in that case, so there's that. xD
The look, the voice! I could have sworn it was David Bowie.
The Quality.. Ohh my word..
Absolutely brilliant
Incredible you pieced it all together
I’m loving this!
one of my fav bands in the 80s
Damn this is actually pretty good, couldn't unironically see myself listening to this.
You mean COULD unironically see yourself listening to it?
Ricky in that era probably had some Bowie DNA 🧬 buahaha
It’s about time the full video gets uploaded! Various clips have made the rounds during interviews with Ricky, so I knew a digital copy already existed! Thank you!
This is genuinely good
This is really good, actually it’s awsome I’ve never ear it in the past and Ricky your voice it’s spectacular 👍
Chorus is very catchy. With a better producer this could have been a hit tbh.
Completely agree! If a better producer had worked on this and its promoted right, it would have been top 20. 1983 was a very competitive year for singles. The chorus is spot on but the rest needs a little work.
This is funky
This a bop‼️💕💕
These lyrics are dripping with the 80s'.
This is brilliant!
It’s very 80s. I was a teen back then and I feel I would have liked it at the time. He has a decent voice.
Wow, beautiful music, I enjoy watching this video
This is pretty good!
great work!!
Such a great song!
Wow, David Bowie vibes but also a bit of Depche mode. Interesting. X
Can't believe this is Ricky gervais! How did I not know about this until now?
I keep discovering amazing music facts about the 80s nearly every day, and this is a good example.
I would have never guessed this was the same person if I hadn't been told. He was so cool, haha.
He's only 22 here. He's actually trying to sound like a famous early 80s singer called David Sylvian of the band Japan.
@@ajs41 He ended up sounding way better than that guy, imo
@@ajs41 Rubbish, he sounds more like Kevin Patterson of Fiction Factory.
Very good looking 👌
This is very good!!
This was great... And you, essentially, created the music video too?! awesome job! Jam on. Subbed
❤❤❤ all round great entertainer !!
I was today year old when I found out Ricky was musician. He has such a great voice damn
Right wtf
Love the song, but more importantly, AMAZING WORK at putting the video together. Waw 👏👏👏👏
Chilled out entertainer.
Bloody love this 😊❤
I LOVE IT!!!!
This is frigging good
this goes so 80s hard
So many people are saying 'David Bowie and Depeche Mode', which were influences, but it's actually closest to the band Japan and their vocalist David Sylvian. If you like this check them out.
100% right. I've been posting comments saying that for ages, but mostly people ignore you because they haven't heard of Japan and David Sylvian. (Tin Drum is my favourite album of all time incidentally).
Pseudo Echo, Classix Noveau
not bad at all!! And Ricky looks hot here!
Pure Numan ;)
In an alternate universe David Brent is dancing to the 12” Extended Remix of this on his pirate radio station.
Always loved their song Seona Lierry
Amazing.
Had a very lucky find today. I discovered both of there 12"singles for only 3:50p..they could've been massive
Right??? Sooooooo good
OMG, why didn't he become a singing legend like David Bowie or Human League!!! How did I not know this before his a legend!!! Time to re-release these amazing songs and videos!!! #rickygervaispoplegend
Good song. "More to Lose" is a classic and the few songs the group released are good. Although Gervais had yet to develop as a performer there's no denying he had a presence and a look by then. It's a shame the band never got to release an album and tour, with their looks and talent they could have been one of the top musical acts of the time.
Ye defo can tell he loves Bowie, think even if he does know, the look and the voice are pure Bowie.
The voice is also based on David Sylvian, lead singer of the band Japan, who were very big in England in the early 1980s.
Wow, it's probably the best attempt to recreate original video so far, fantastic!
Isn’t this this the actual full video? It’s amazing
@@acedegenerate6959 No, it isn't, you can ever read about it in video description - amazing job, indeed!
The multi talented Ricky Gervais. I had no idea he was a singer in the 80s!
That hook is glorious
You would never guess he was a Bowie fan
OMG looks and sounds like Bowie...Ricky!!!!
Still better than todays Horse Baloney.
I'd much rather be hearing this than sweet dreams for the 5000th time
this one is quite nice :)
