When I use chicken I precut it and put it in vacuum seal bags then coat it with strawberry jello powder and vacuum seal it. I place it in the fridge for 2-3 days to let it cure. This seems to toughen the chicken up quite a bit and it stays on the hook very well. I believe the jello powder helps the curing process.

@@rawbsworld6604 Had you paid attention you may have deduced the flavor/color isn't the objective. It was the ability to cure the chicken and make it tougher and stay on the hook longer. Whatever your opinion may be, it still works and we have caught a lot of 20 and 30 plus pound blues using it. Especially when they don't seem to be wanting to bite. If you don't want to try it, then by all means , please don't. I use skipjack, shad, white bass, blue gill or chicken. They all work at times.

@@rawbsworld6604 nah, I doubt he would since it was something that Dieter Melhorn endorsed quite a bit. For some reason he seems to have a thing with Dieter, don't know why. Dieter does say that the chicken by itself works just as well but as I said the jello does cure it.
It works well in certain bodies of water and not very well in others. Fresh cut bait from the body of water you're fishing is always the best bet along with live baits from that same body of water.
We don't have skipjack here on the Catawba river system. My wife and I catch a few bream and use those. I use chicken breast some and have caught several 20+ pounders on it. Flatheads won't eat it.

Rumor has it that chicken works well in waters that have high mussel concentrations, but not as well in waters that have few mussels. Don't know if that is true, as it is anecdotal information, but it could be true. Probably only for the blue cats because they love mussels during certain times of the year.
Try the thigh meat from the chicken it is tougher and stays on hook better ! Also cheaper especially when getting close to out of date around a dollar a pound and takes jello and kool aid very well .just bring hand sanitizer on the boat and use after every rebait !
I haven't tried it personally but I've heard some of the old timers talk about putting the chicken in a panty hose pouch to keep it from coming off so easily.
Cut out of squares of pantyhose, put chicken inside, then tie off with Magic Thread. (it's used for salmon eggs) Smaller hook Dave, 8/0 circle is fine.
I always get chicken breasts and soak them in Cherry Kool Aid. Make it blood red and messy as hell. But, I've slammed 70 plus in the last 4-6 weeks. and over 50 were keepers. 5 - 14lbs
I had 1 try to break my rod yesterday and ofcourse the Team Catfish circle hook didnt set. Ive yet to get a catfish on their hooks. Very Not Impressed.
