- Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a Jew looks like from the inside? I filmed a full day of Jewish ritual practice, from the moment we wake up, to the moment we fall asleep, with a little explanation of each. I hope you enjoy.
We live in a ritual bereft society, hungering for meaning, community and connection. Religion, at its finest, is able to provide those. In this series, we’re going to explore the form and function of religious rituals.

This is so awesome! A heartfelt thanks for being so honest about your Jewish practice brother! As a Muslim there is so much similarity between Islam and Judaism... Tzedaka in Hebrew (Justice- the monetary sharing) is called Sadaqah in Arabic which is so important in Islam as well! Amongst many other Similarities. We are all created by One perfect and Divine God and it's truly so amazing to see all of us living (or trying our best to live ;) ) within the Light of God! Infinite Peace and Blessings to you!

Much like a day in the life of a Muslim. Islam and Judaism are often criticized as too ritualistic or too formalist, but the truth is that all of these acts of devotion carry deep meaning and affect us deeply in ways we sometimes don't fully appreciate.

I'm a convert so I wasn't raised in this way. Some things like hand washing and kashrut are easy enough to implement with enough learning, but I have such a problem doing morning prayer. Because of my chronic illnesses, I can't wake up early enough to fit it between sunrise and the start of my work shift. I'm not a fast reader, so it takes me 45-60min to do even the essential prayers. In the winter it's basically impossible with how the dawn time changes 😢 I really enjoy praying, so I wish it was doable for me
You can still do daily prayers! Start with Shema, add a few as you get used to it and start to memorise the words so that it maybe goes a little faster. G-d knows your heart; it's ok if you don't get every syllable out perfectly and quickly like the 80 year old Yid who's been doing it his whole life. 💜💜
Read the phonetic transcription, it's much faster.
Echoing what previous posters have read: start small with the Sh’ma. If your chronotype doesn’t work well with Shacharit, are you able to Mincha and/or Ma’ariv with a bit more sacred intention to compensate? Wishing you only blessings on your journey! ❤
You can also pray along with a recorded version. Just make sure to make adjustments for days with tachanun. This will help you learn the prayers and also improve your reading. Refuah shelimah!

As a Muslim this is truly informative and enlightening, not to mention almost eerily similar to Islam, especially if one is familiar with tassawuf or sufism. I also appreciate the symbolic meanings and mystical interpretations behind the rituals. The accusations thrown to both Islam and Judaism seems to be that its too legalistic, too formulaic and too ritualistic but as your video has pointed out, this is far from the case. I suppose I shouldnt be surprised, nor should any Muslim who is familiar with al Ghazali, the philosopher mystic who basically gives an esoteric explanation behind every Islamic ritual while stressing the importance of the ritual itself. The Sharia or Islamic law must be balanced with the Haqiqa, the spiritual truths. The inner (batin) needs the outer (zahir), there is no one without the other.
On a side note - did I understand the symbolic meaning behind the tefillin correctly? In that it also symbolises Isaac's willing sacrifice to God as commanded to Abraham? If it is, wow that is powerful stuff! Because as you know, we have the same story in Islam, but rather than Isaac, it was was Ishmael...but let's not get into that now haha.
Thank you again for your efforts in making this video. As a Muslim, its fascinating to watch other traditions resemble your own, and somewhat interestingly, I have an increased appreciation by the end and was teary eyed. It must have also been hard to record this since worship is intensely personal, especially in spiritual paths where intentions have to be purified and be purely for God. Nevertheless you have enlighten many, and in these troubled times, we should build more bridges than destroying them.

Amazing video bro as a Jew by choice this really inspired me to step up my daily practice thanks man not sure if ur on the east coast or near NYC but maybe u can get some other points of views on Judaism also maybe talk to those who are more secular and thOther groups as well
I found recently that the word kippah is cognate to Akkadian kippatu, which was derived from Sumerian ŋešpu, and the "pu" sign is buluŋ, "to grow," referred to as Akkadian rabû.
This ŋešpu refers to circles, rims, and came to eventually be represented in Jewish iconography as domes (and circles).
If you see the threshold of Ashurbanipal from Dur Sharrugin, you'll note the pattern which is referred to by the rosette of the Magdala Stone. The border of the threshold is a design also found at the City of David. These links are also seen on the ANE representations of the Tree of Life. These are depictions of the Saffron Crocus.
This relates to circles, wheels, the menorah (a representation of the tree of life), and your kippah.
Saffron is Azubir, the "Healing Branch," Azupiru, of the Kurgirin, "Mountain Flower," Karkanu Pirizah, Karkom, the Crocus.
Your word for Gold, zahab, is derived from Azubir, rather than Saffron deriving its name from the color of the metal.
I was thinking that this practice and explanation warmed my heart, and then at the end I see the dedication and it all makes sense. Jewish Renewal has my heart and soul. I’m working on my conversion with a Recon group that has a heavy focus on Renewal, and it has made so much sense for me and my passions and yearning for practice.

These rituals might seem simple and insignificant but they retuning you back to G-d
This whole day you were vibrating at the highest consciousness, G-d is highest consciousness and we are to strive to reach this state consciousness in our daily life, to be more like our Abba.

Additionally, if someone has not already suggested this: I would love for you to do maybe one dedicated video to common blessings for sensations and experiences? Ex when smelling flowers and when entering a city?
I have found the beauty and simplicity of these blessings to be profound and I think they bare elaboration in thr context of cultivating a life that is mindful of god.

as one who grew up with all this, i know exactly what you’re doing- but in watching this video progress, i realized you are opening a window into something that observant jews rarely care to show or explain to the outside world. it felt like i was watching you give away a big secret of living in the derech, haha, but i was glad for it.
for me, the rituals and tefillah that mark the unfolding of time each day, and demarcate boundaries of both time and space, have a rhythm and mystical power most people outside of the practice do not see or understand. while there is a lot of focus on torah out there online (which is great, of course), the liturgy and halachic code of daily life is rarely made beautiful and explained like this. can’t wait for the episode when you show kohanim duchaning the priestly blessing and making the spock hand symbol with tallit over their heads- will totally freak people out 😂 i’ve been enjoying your channel for awhile, but i feel like you are tapping into a whole new level here. thanks for the great work. reb zalman A’H was such an inspiration. the work of rabbi joseph soloveitchik A’H was also very impactful for me, wonder if you’ve read his works. much love to you, be well.

A side note: when I began studying Maimonides Code (by the Rebbes zt"l instructions) I began saying the morning blessings (birkot ha'shahar) according to his rulling, even before washing my hands. You thank God for opening your eyes in the moment you do it. You thank Him for being able to sit up in bed etc.

I do however say the Modeh Ani and the Shema every morning, and the Shema at night.

Yes we do. All three featured in the video, albeit briefly. Shacharit, the morning prayer, Mincha in the afternoon and Maariv (aka Arvit) in the evening.

Although the Jewish calendrical day begins at sunset/nightfall, almost all elucidations of the Jewish day found in Jewish literature (seder hayom, shulchan aruch, etc.) begin with the morning.
In this exposition I followed the example set by our sacred literature.

That fascinates me… how does that work, a Muslim and a noahide. My understanding is that noahide is pre-islam. Curious about your practices/beliefs
@@nissengoldman4474 Hello, i can explain my journey of course. First i bacame muslim, i was practicing its learnings, i was praying in form of salah. At the same time i continued to read about history of all religions and especially about judaism. Then i learned about noahide concept. Simply it has got 7 rules. I saw that these 7 rules are compatible with islam. Also i heard from a famous rabbi, that muslims are counted as noahide because of strict monoteism. Then i decided to practice both beliefs together. I found a noahide prayer book from internet. Sometimes i pray from that book, sometimes i pray as form of salah. I still countinue to learn from rabbis about jewish culture because they are light to the nations.
Yes you are right, noahide concept is pre-islam but its concept, the rules exist also in islam. Even if someone doesnt believe prophet muhammad recieve revelation, his teaching are compatible with noahide concept. So i think a person can practice both beliefs at same time.

May the spiritual and the religious see each other because they know the other just like Adam knew her. May we understand our oneness that is all Him in her who is us. There is no such thing as separate. This is who we are and I believe religion is finally understanding that the Nations are her, who now knows the difference between all that is good and evil because we see what is good in our image 🙏🙏🙏

Great video-- What I will say is that this does present the specific customs of your community as being "how Jews do things" which may be misleading for non Jews or uninvolved Jews who don't know some of these things are just customs. I'm Sephardi and we do not do all of these or do them the same way.
