  • Christopher Nolan does it again, this time with rival magicians seeking to one-up each other with magic, science, and intrigue. The twists and turns in this movie are insane and brilliant, as only Christopher Nolan could pull off.

"We were two young men at the start of a great career. Two young men devoted to an illusion" - Borden was talking about him and his brother.
Also...when the kid says "But where's his brother" has much more meaning after the twin brother reveal.

I’ve watched this movie dozens of times and I never realized Borden was talking about himself and his brother, thank you for pointing that out! Just proof of how amazing this movie is, something new to discover with every rewatch.

Seriously, thanks for that. Never picked up on that small detail after seeing this a billion times. And yeah, the child's line, means so much more when the brother's gone. Hell, it's even the same man who heard it! The Borden that chose her, who lived on. Just wow.

This movie is genius on so many levels. It's another example of what I refer to as "anti-twist" movies. They literally tell you how Borden does the trick, but you're so caught up in Angier getting his vengeance and you're so thoroughly on his side that you dismiss it. After you spend most all of the movie rooting for Angier, you suddenly realize at the end that he was the far worse and much more morally repugnant character of the two. Borden didn't try to kill Angier's wife, but Angier couldn't accept it. This movie also contains one of the great tragic performances of all time in David Bowie's role as Tesla. Bowie plays Tesla as a man who knows full well that he can't achieve what he wants but is powerless to not try, and he is obviously rebuffed by outside forces. There's always this incredible, restrained sadness on his face with every line and expression. This is an amazing movie.

who in their right minds rooted for angier the whole movie??? up until the last scene I thought none of the mcs were worth rooting for, and angier was clearly the worse one of the two, even before the reveal

I had to comment twice; Angier’s self-centered attitude played a role in his demise, too. Angier was SO selfish, so needy of being “The Prestige:” that instead of cloning himself once and having to share the glow of the “The prestige” with someone else, he chose to murder himself (in the most brutal way imaginable, thanks to Cutter’s subtle remark) over and over again so that “he”could bask in the glow of the Prestige.
Brilliant, masterful, layered content that begs you to watch it again and again.

Regarding the knot voiceover: "I kept asking myself which one I tied.." 😭😂😂

Ricky Jay was first and foremost one of the the world's best sleight-of-hand or close-up magicians. Acting was something he did occasionally. There are a few documentaries about him, and his life was very interesting. Sad to see him passing.

Great reaction! When you rewatch this film you'll notice new details and will love it even more 😀. Can't wait to see your mom watch Inception for the first time.

Thanks! Inception's going to require a TON of explanation on my part. I've seen it plenty of times, and it still hurts my brain to comprehend the full plot.

Nick and Jen, you must watch & react to Christopher Nolan’s 2017 movie DUNKIRK about the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II through the perspectives of land, sea, and air.

Both are great movies, came out around the same time with a similar premise, so a lot of people said to see one or the other. But they're very different stories, and both worth watching.

Great to see very cognizant people watch and recognize the clues throughout a movie like this.
My favorite line was when Cutter tells Angier that death by drowning was “agony”, after having lied to him earlier to console him about the death of his wife. That statement was what Angier used to choose his own method of death - unknowingly committing himself to hundreds of painful, agonizing deaths.
Cutter doing an about face and telling him the truth was worse than any physical act of vengeance anyone could do to someone.

To me, the fishbowl trick Cutter told the two young magicians to figure out was key

Interesting things about this movie. There are two parallels this movie does. The magicians act parallels movie making and the feud between Angier and Borden is meant to parallel the feud between Edison and Tesla. Constantly sabotaging each other. One an unappreciated technical genius and the other an showman who tries to steal the other's work.
