James Morris is a wonderful artist with beautiful line in his singing. He is one of my favorite Wotan's. My favorite is George London. Both Morris and London are excellent
As a opera and singing lover I am a shamed to say that nobody has told me about James Morris, what a Miss,I have started to listen now and will go on..he sings more beutifull than many does in Wagner…
I bought the VHS’s of his Met production almost 30 years ago and still think that Morris is phenomenal. But having seen how the industry has degraded in the decades since, I have to fault him for making this all a bit too precious. This isn’t a criticism of the performance itself but, rather, that too many baritones who followed him emulated the “sensitivity” of his singing and disregarded the fundamental vocalism the role demands. That vocalism is actually what carries the drama and without it, it just seems like the singer is trying to “win a prize” as we used to say.
James Morris's first performance as Wotan at the Met (I believe it was in the late 1980s) under James Levine's baton was sensational. Later on I feel like he didn't put as much passion into his singing and was going on pure technical musicality and tone. He is not my ideal Wotan. For me personally the best is Theo Adam under Bohm at Bayreuth.
Historique incarnation parfaite !
Wotan's heartbreak. This singer understands and expresses it.

For me, James Morris is really the finest Wotan -- the majestic voice, the legato, the phrasing.

James Morris, gran artista, y a mi entender, magnifico cantante e interprete, de los dramas de Wagner.
Excelente: interpretacion.
Une grande et belle basse avec beaucoup d'élégance dans son chant sans oublier le charisme !
A Fantastic bass-baritone. One of the best! Other great ones -- Hans Hotter and Rene Pape.

Bravo, Bravo, Bravo! James Morris! But for me is, for very personal reasons, Robert Hale "my" baritone" Eotan.
Morris ist Wotan ?
it's really a song Wagner didn't want any arias in The ring until Brunnhilde's immolation in Gotterdammerung.

I agree about Morris and Hotter. Pape is a fine bass but he lacks the sheer power needed for Wotan in my opinion
+hans drp
Rene Pape does not sing the Wotan any more.
