The tragic power of Herr Hotter is indescribable--must be heard to be believed. It is a wonderful representation of the great one's love and regret for his favorite. Overpowering!
Everything in this performance is true drama, as Wagner would have wanted it I believe: the action, the lighting, the simple setting - a pity there are no rocks, no semblance of fire etc. - and of course Hotter's magnificent voice. The best and most moving footage I've seen of Wotans Abschied. Both truly look their part. The James Morris production is better costume/setting wise but his voice doesn't come close.
Just listened to Rene Pape singing the Abschied before this. As much as I admire Pape in many things, he is not a Wotan; I had to come here and remind myself of how Wotan is MEANT to sound! And admittedly this is Hotter towards the end of his career - stupendous! Shame about the hammy acting at 0.10-0.15 but hey, this was 50 years ago. Still a breathtaking performance.
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank u very much i've been searching for any video for Hotter as Wotan (he is the greatest Wotan in my opinion)
Grandios, diese szenische Wahrhaftigkeit. Kein neu-dilettantisches "Musiktheater".
True, and he didn't benefit from the other problems in the recording; but he was still singing the role regularly, and still pretty amazing. There was some question of replacing him for the recording, perhaps with Theo Adam or Hotter's protege David Ward, Solti's Wotan at Covent Garden; but Hotter's experience was thought to be more marketable.
So majestic and godly. Hotter's overwhelming stage presence and dramatic power are immortalized here, not to mention his physical strength. Thank you scarbo98 for this fantastic upload. Where is this divine footage from?
télévision de Belgique. 2 novembre 1965.
Wieland Wagner radically altered the staging of his grandfather's works after WWII, partly to save money, but primarily to disassociate Wagner's works from the horror of the Nazi regime just recently defeated. His staging can best be described as sparse, with costumes, actions and props that represented symbolically the action on the stage. If you look at Hotter, there is a darkening of his left eye, just a hint, but definitely there. From this we are drawn to the symbolic reason for his loss of his left eye, not the literal eye patch. And that reason is his loss of inner sight, of intuition, of self-comprehension. What he gained was knowledge of ruling, of laws, of treaties, of order, and civilization. He surely could have put that inner vision to good use in this story!
Allen Jones: As much as I adore and adore the other men, they stand behind Hotter. WAIT George London stands alongside Hotter then Thomas Stewart and James Morris are behind
I love Hand Hotter but doesn’t really to be singing. Was he miming to a prerecorded soundtrack?? Now if the woman were to open her mouth and Birgit Nilsson’s voice came then I’d it was prerecorded!!
Born in 1909, Hotter would have been 56 in 1965, which I think is when they recorded the Solti Walkure (last recorded of the tetralogy). 56 is not old!
Considering that he sung his first Wanderer when he was 21, 56 is quite old. He had a history of Wotan at this point for over 35 years. There is no other singer ever who sung this role that long. Even under todays standards 56 is old. Nowadays Wotans are finished in their mid-fortys or earlier. Look at Juha Uuhsitalo. Done. Not to mention Rene Papes pathetic attempts. He can't even get it done singing just the solo farewell in concert. This is what opera-marketing-make-believers consider the creme de la crop...
1965 and the French still thought that an opera set should be the same for Wagner as for a classic theatre play by Jean Giroudoux or Racine!! The setting could not be more inappropriate if it tried. Oh perhaps it was trying? The singers deserved something better than this gimcrack minimalist setting

Best Wotan in the 20-th century.Beautiful technique and brilliant nature ...
@@jasonhurd4379 - Sorry to contradict you both. Best Wotan I've seen was Simon Estes. - Heinz
@@pega17pl I saw Estes once and was astounded. It has been so long. I suspect I would still give first place to Hotter.
Nicely sung and acted. The first time i ever saw Wotan carry Brunny! Instead of a patch they gave him a black eye!
Do you have any experiences of him to pass onto the next generation? 🤩
Le plus grand WOTAN du XXe siècle ! Sa signature vocale est unique.

This orchestra is superb.
The voice and the presence of a true god
Sounds better than in the recording of the same period - less asthmatic.
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank u very much

Not only your opinion. Hotter is recognized by critics, musicians and singers as the WOTAN of Wotans.
Grandios, diese szenische Wahrhaftigkeit. Kein neu-dilettantisches "Musiktheater".
Recently heard Bryn terfel singing wotan. Enough to put one off for life. Had to turn it off. Shocking. Whereas this is perfection
This one isn't that good either. Nasal voice, wobble, way past his prime.
Terfel should never have attempted Wotan.
Legendary!
Excellent. Thank you so much for posting. Rest, you God. ;)
magnificent

A pity about the orchestra and the synchronisation - but HH is Simply the Best.
great!!!

Danke, danke, danke für diese beeindruckende Szene‼️‼️‼️😘
What am I hearing? This guy is Wotan playing himself!
Herr Wotan, Der Wotan.

Le WOTANISSIME !!!
I'm troubled by the lack of sync -- sound is clearly early.
#BOTD in 1909 🌹🌹🌹
Why does he have both eyes?
It's a good question
+Shmuel Malkin ... a god can everything ;-)
+Shmuel Malkin maybe he had an artificial eye translplantation, he spent some gold on plastic surgery :D :D
Because hes not a cyclops!! Wotan can have 2 eyes but sees only out of one!

Who is the conductor? The orchestra?
who is brünnhilde singing?
Hexmeyer_ Yes. Looking twice, you're probably right.
HE is GOD. And Wagner is another GOD.
AMEN FOREVER
Hotter ranks alongside London, Stewart and Morris as one of the great Wagnerian bass/baritones.
Yeah! Good
Allen Jones: As much as I adore and adore the other men, they stand behind Hotter. WAIT George London stands alongside Hotter then Thomas Stewart and James Morris are behind
Agree.
London is his equal or an inch behind.
I think this is not the original audio. Sounds like Solti's recording. Hotter had a cold or something during the recording.
I find the temp too fast for m y taste.
I think she is Anja Silja.
That is NOT Silja.
I love Hand Hotter but doesn’t really to be singing. Was he miming to a prerecorded soundtrack?? Now if the woman were to open her mouth and Birgit Nilsson’s voice came then I’d it was prerecorded!!
Who played Brunnhilde?
Jacqueline Amand
Who cares?! :)
She doesn't look like Silja. I suspect she is just some good-looking actress.
Sean Coxen Jacqueline Amand not Silja.
Actually hotter was really old during the Solti recording, and could no longer deliver as stellar of a vocal performance as he once did.

or Bryn Terfel, he should have stuck with Mozart. He is not a Wagner Voice. Only possible at the Met with artificial amplifying. Hillarious!
What does it matter if he was 56 or 36 or 76.....? Just go with the sound and sheer musicality... Which is surely second to none.
@@thptomherzogpodcast5154 Heard Terfel live singing this aria, you may not like his voice but it actually carried pretty well.

Welch eine Stimme, unbegreiflich!
Too fast; needs to slow down somewhat.
Awful.
What a fool you are Kling. There is no bass-baritone that compare to Hotter’s artistry bit in Opera and lieder
Then go and listen to Ariana Grande. Undeveloped voices might fit your taste better
