  • This is a time lapse video about how to draw rocks or stones with pencil. Rocks are another important component of landscape drawing. Wide bare land on a drawing can be filled with some rocks to make the drawing more interesting. Here is a high level detail of how to recreate this drawing:
Using a 2B pencil with very light pressure draw outline of rocks.
Now using the same 2B pencil start shading these rocks.
Consider that the light is coming from the left and some areas on the rock facing towards light. So do not shade those areas, keep the white paper untouched.
When that light shading is done, go back to the right most part of the rock and shade with little more pressure to build the darker side.
Areas where the rock is meeting the ground also will be darker as very less light is reaching there.
For each rock try to build their shape differently just putting the shading in different areas and that will look like more realistic.
Create cracks in some places applying some darker shading.
Finally add some grass to define the ground for rocks prominently and that will give a nice look instead of just rocks on bare land.
Let's watch the drawing for detail instruction and let me know if you like this. Thanks you.

What a treat nice soft format , challenges each artist to abbreviate and create. Gentle music with time lapse helps one to pause and work on each piece ie rock and grass compilation . Also think about the 7h to 5h range to etch paper bond weight from copy paper etch softley to strathemore thicker paper / panel so that one can explore grass creation and of course come with 4b 5b and 6b or even include graphite powder with brush + thumb or stump. Thank you as a commercial artist my 6 year old would and iwill enjoy this pleasant and kind instruction backed with solid construction techniques keep it up and again thank you and peace to your family draw onward

Also to be specific on pencils, based on hardness or softness of pencil you will get different types of shading. Using your skill you can overcome some challenges when using a inappropriate surface or medium. On the other hand using appropriate surface or medium it may be is easily achievable what you are trying to archive. Hope my own explanation will help you with your question.

Well, this is a very controversial question and some people will say 'yes' and some people will say 'no'. I will say 'yes' - in most cases it does matter what kind of paper and pencil or other material is used. When I plan for a drawing or painting I do consider about paper/ surface and other materials as part of my planning. That is because various types of paper will create various types of textures. [see next message also, I cannot fit my answer in one message :(]
