  • This video will show YOU how to draw realistic grass. I will take you through the steps on how to draw texture and the composition of grass. I even show you how to apply this to other drawings.
Check out my facebook page @ / tylersartshack
Here is a tutorial on how to draw tall grass. This can be used to fill in many areas of landscapes to add in visual interest and texture. This tutorial will help you to draw realistic grass by producing realistic texture.
This drawing only used a 2B and 2H pencil and at the very end I used a 4B for dark shadows to create depth.
The rest of the supplies you will need consist of sharp tipped erasers and a needle point of some sort.
This tutorial starts out with simple pencil strokes. Press a sharp pencil down on the page and flick it upwards to create a gradual line that ends in a sharp tip. After layering this, it will start to create a grass texture. When there is a simple layer on the page, start adding another layer and blend the two layers together. Do this by erasing larger blades of grass extending from the bottom layer to the top layer and also making pencil strokes that extend from the first to the second layer.
The continuing combination of erasing, adding darker lines, and shading will help to create a grass like texture.
To help show grass growing into the distance, Continue above the current grass but make the pencil strokes significantly smaller to the point that the grass is simply a shaded area.
I have a few photos on my facebook page on grass that I have drawn. Check them out to see some more examples.

I do both just to add in some variation. The biggest difference though is that if you start from the bottom and when you "flick" the pencil upwards, you get a nice thin line that really helps to give the grass its overall effect.

Just take your time and practice. Replicating a drawing can take a long time to perform and understand. It is a long term hobby which takes work but it does pay off in time.

Tyler, I love your style. I have over bombarded myself with so many tutorials on drawing and so many different ways! You are not so critical! as so many are that I've seen with tools, blending, etc.etc. Your drawings are great works and I've love to be able do it the way you do. Standardizing as you do.

Thank you very much! I always try to have an open mind when it comes to art. I like to keep rules and guidelines to a minimum but still keep them there to stay on track. I find that when I get too strict with my drawings, it frustrates me. This is also why I draw the way I do. It still has a realistic look to it but it breaks it down into many steps.

How do you get your pencils so sharp? Whenever I try to sharpen a pencil that is slightly dull it will just break, so I end up using a lot of pencil to make it sharp.

I have been a bit confused in the landscape drawing process. (when to place in the for- ground objects and how keep astmospheric perspective) - being lost in the details. But, your Video on the Summer Mountain scene has helped me a lot. Using the grid system and by placeing in each object on the grid lines at the start of the process. Then defining for me clearly the form I am trying for. I was trying it like a painting process... But the drawings were way to busy or muddy. Using that grid realy has helped me. Also, it has helped with forshortening and defining the shadow areas more clearly. All of your information is real and useable for me, and It is helping me become better. So thank you kind sir. I am enjoying all the viedos. Jon in Tennesse.

so you said you started with a 2b pencil then you say you used a very fine tip pencil to get the streaks. So are you saying the 2b pencil is the sharp tip pencil or was the 2b not sharp enough and you changed??

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 років тому

I would assume that if you were drawing it from a birds eye view that you would be rather high up on a cliff or some other object looking down. At that point I would only just do a generalized shading process. I wouldn't focus on the detail work because you would be pretty far away. I might hint at some of that detail but not much.

Would it be possible for you to show how to draw grasses that are tall and also bent over at the top, either because of heavy seed heads, or just because they grow that way. We have a clump in our garden that is about 6 feet tall, but the last two feet bend over so far the tips are almost pointing to the ground... thanks, I found this video very helpful.

It doesn't really matter if people dislike it though. It still counts as viewer engagement and brings the video up higher in the search rankings for some reason haha. But what does help is the comments that I get. That really helps towards the future of what I do here on this channel.
