My daughter spilled tea-lite candle wax on her D800 keyboard and it soaked all the way through. But by some miracle it missed the motherboard and fans and landed to the right of the center fan on the metal covering over the hard drive.. I was able to clean it all off of that. Thanks to this video my keyboard was easy enough to clean. I just ran it under hot tap water (I think my dw temp is too hot).
I spilt a full mug of coffee right on the keyboard of my old HP-Compaq laptop. I wasn't quick enough with the powering off - grey bars ran across the screen and it died. I got lucky though, I dismantled the whole thing and dried it off to discover one of the memory DIMMs was fried. It was amusing tipping the DVD drive on its side and watching coffee pour out! That laptop finally died two years later (last week in fact) with GPU/BGA failure. I might try baking it in the oven to resolder it!
I once received a laptop (in pieces) that had obviously had pop or coffee or something spilled on it. The hard disk label was stained and the mainboard was stained, and I had absolutely no hope of getting it to work. However, I assembled it within 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon, and after installing the battery and letting it charge for a while, to my amazement, it worked like nothing had ever happened! The only issues were a very, VERY flaky wireless card and a sticky K key. Oddly enough, though, another almost identical computer I received at the same time, fully assembled, didn't work at all!
Ahhh, I need to replace the keyboard on my Inspiron e1505....Im not certain it will be as easy....These Dells are tough. I did this with a fullsize desktop computer keyboard, and set it on the roof in the sun and works like new! Sure beats taking it all apart to clean.
I hate working on laptops. One time I worked on customer's computer for hours, got it all fixed up. Then it went back to the way it was before I even worked on it. Apparently, the motherboard in the HP laptop was recalled on a bunch of their models. Except the one I was working on of course, even though it was the same MB and same issue. Apparently the MB keeps corrupting the BIOS causing constant restarts and hardware issues. No fix except replacing the MB, so there goes all my labor
I always thought it was strange that laptop cooling vents were on the bottom, seems like a good way to suck in lots of dirt. I have seen people use dishwashers on keyboards before, usually its the best way to clean them.
When washing these things in the dishwasher should you use the dishwashing powder you'd normally use, or just use plain water? A lot of Dell products are in fact made by Foxconn, is this laptop made by Foxconn?
Uxwbill... I took your advice and picked one up, so far, I've got no complaints, yours and mine are identical in all ways except the display (1900x1200 I think). The only thing I have to complain about is the "glitch" or "error" that Microsoft seems to no longer allow updates to a NEW installation of XP, existing installations don't seem to be affected. Only "auto" updates seem to allow anything to work. Keep the vids. going!
Something similar happened to me on my H.P. Laptop. a few of the keys you had to hit some of the keys really hard or they wouldn't work. I read up on line that if you take the keyboard out and clean the ribbon cable with some alcohol it would work perfectly again. I figured it wouldn't work, buy I gave it a try anyway. And wouldn't you know, it worked perfectly after I did it. :-)
great job bill but lawd have mercy im blinded now when you put the camera on bizarre furhead please tell that dude to put clothes on its like a solar eclipse when you did that lol btw i can see where his name comes from literally haha
i have a quick question...i am replacing the keyboard in my dell D800 also. I ordered a keyboard on ebay. i have three buttons at the top for mute and volume settings. these will be separate from the keyboard correct?
@uxwbill The original design the had was a better one. I believe the Macbooks suck air in the keyboard as well, but I can't tell. My Compaq drove me crazy, it had all the vents on the bottom and they were easily blocked, causing the thing to get very hot very fast.
I know this is off topic but my dad can get me like 5 oldish like windows xp SP1 and I want to make one a Free NAS server for our house we have about 7 active computers at our house could you make a tutorial about how to set one up (soft where not the hard where that u did before) if you could make a video this would be greatly appriciated
