  • When it was launched, the Trident was one of the fastest subsonic commercial airliners in the world. It has become synonymous with the short haul jet age and it's groundbreaking technology helped it establish itself as a true aviation classic.

Britain led the way back in those days in so many areas of aviation. Shame we couldn't afford to keep up the momentum. The world-beater days have gone.😢😢

I flew Milan London in 1976 on a BEA Trident. Nice aeroplane and very fast. And BEA served a fantastic risotto to the back seat passengers. It would be brilliant these days in business class. How times have changed.

Great video. Brings back so many memories. I was a cinematographer with the Hawker Siddeley film unit based at the headquarters at Hatfield Hertfordshire. I was in the cockpit filming the blind landing trials at Gatwick and at the end of the runway at Heathrow. We made a public relations film for the company called “ Clear to Land “.

That must have been so exciting to film. I have to admit to scouring You Tube for those beautifully made types of films. A much neglected genre in my books.

Hatfield was the former De Havilland "HQ" where my father worked till 1957. (He left when it was merged with Hawker Siddeley)

I have seen the film "Cleared to Land" several times. Amazing footage. The clipped upper class accent of the captain Is something else. Class act.

Always loved this plane ever since getting the shuttle down to London from Edinburgh on a Trident 3 and then a Trident 2 to Bordeaux. I was aged 14.

We used to do fire fighting training in that Fuselage when it was at Reigate, they used to pour oil on the floor to try to make it harder for us, good times when you are young and stupid!! Glad it got saved

Love the landing gear. You couldn’t make that more complex if you tried. Mains have 4 wheels on one axle and rotate 90° prior to retracting plus the nose gear is off the centre line and retracts sideways. Very British.

Having never seen a Trident in the flesh ( we never had them in Australia, sadly) , in later years I bought a die cast model to add to my collection but sent it back because I thought the noise wheel was attached wrongly , i.e. off centre ! Oops !
I wonder what underhanded subterfuge the Americans engaged in to ensure that this splendid aeroplane didn’t attain the international commercial success it deserved…. you know….like they did with the VC10 and later the Concorde. 😎

They didn't need to, BEA did enough damage by getting them to make it to the wrong size. Nobody else wanted it then.

Under powered and over designed for one airline only same when BOAC wanted the 707 the government told them it had to have the Conway engines on it to still have some British parts on it even though BOAC new the Pratt an Whitney was more fuel efficient

No subterfuge all the above about BEA is true, but Boeing liaised with dH and de Haviland (stupidly) gave Boeing lots of information and Boeing gave them a far better aircraft as a competitor in the form of the 727.

I flew on Tridents (one to three) thru the 1960s and 70s. Loved them. Always felt like home. BEA, later British Airways. Sad that there are no more flight worthy planes. Btw my father was a member of the De Havilland drawing office till 1957. But to my knowledge didnt work on the Trident.

Re "always felt like home": I mean in whatever country you boarded a Trident, you immediatly felt at home. You knew you were on a British plane. And felt safe.

I flew on one from London to Krakow in 1975. Not a regular route, but a once a week service in the Summer. I do wonder about a modern Trident 3 powered by RR Pearl engines. Would not need the 4th booster engine. Never happen of course.
