    Hello Billy, Shelley, and Stanley!
I started repairing and refinishing an old stool of my dad’s. I watched lots of videos on REAL repair- not just painting over. So woodworking videos came across my feed, and the projects were enticing! Since my dad did woodwork, we had a lot of simple tools to start with.
The best tip I got was to keep sanding! I don’t mind it so much. It’s like meditation for me- and the 3M cubitron sandpaper can be brushed or shaken off and reused over and over!
What’s been an obstacle- my health. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis- I know you understand. So I always ask my daughter and/or son to help me. They ended up enjoying woodworking themselves!
When I make a mistake I try to work it out. I found that things might not go according to plan, but things always end up the way they’re supposed to be.
And I know I’m done with a project when I can’t see anything else that can be done. The top coat is the final step and I start thinking of the next project! 😄
Wonderful build, Billy! I’m glad your sister-in-law loves her TV stand- I know I do! 👍🌟🤘

Yes I’m finding a lot of people with health issues using woodworking to keep active and not just giving up which is fantastic.. I get you with the arthritis it’s an absolute nightmare some days but I have learned myself to deal with it by sort of chasing it down. I normally have a rest in between each scene I shoot and keep everything simple and it works perfectly.. plus a lot of napping in the afternoon (sleep) 🤣👌🪚

I had a friend drop by a couple of days ago. He asked me how things were. I said, “We’ll I’ve been in therapy this morning.” He said, “Oh, what’s the problem?” I said, “Absolutely nothing. I’ve been in my shop all morning.” Woodworking to me, is ‘Therapy.’

Hi,there ..I started woodworking when I bought a kreg pocket hole jig to put a ledge under the kitchen window. I have always done all of my handyman jobs. I’ve made lots of toys for the grandkids , pens for family and friends. Wishing wells , and lots of puzzles and Scrollsaw projects as well. Having a basement shop there is a concern for dust so I am down to mostly scrolling. I’m now 80 years old. I live in Alberta Canada and I enjoy your channel very much. Long live UA-cam.

When joining two boards, you could have used a biscuit jointer to help with alignment. Some glue and clamps and bosh, your done.👍

Forced to retire early at 62 because of a pulmonary embolism four years ago. It nearly took me out.
Formerly a commercial carpenter with scant experience in wood but always loved it. So when I recently took up woodworking as a hobby, I saw it as a natural evolution into who and what I really am. Notice I said hobby... I'm not looking to start a business, just building quality wood products and furniture for my home.

Hi Billy, nice Tv stand for your sister, for me as a youngster it was more of a shed thing especially my Taid's Shed ( Taid is Welsh for Grandad ) when I use to stay at my Taid and Nains house ( Nain is Welsh for Gran ) I used to watch him repair furniture but mainly he repaired shoes and made toys for me he made me a castle and a long road bridge for my matchbox and corgi cars. My grandparents lived in a village of Coedpoeth which is 4-5 miles from Wrexham on the Wrexham to Rhyl road. To this day I still have a thing for Sheds, Workshops and Garages also outbuildings and now I have my own Workshop and Garage I find it as my freedom and at times just sit there and do nothing just for a peace of mind.
I mainly make things for the workshop or just repairing thing I just do it when I need too.
My next big job in a few weeks is to replace my porch widows as the wooden frames are starting to rot plus they are single glazed I've got some 2nd hand upvc windows will need to frame out as they are smaller. Catch you soon keep up the good work mate Take care

I started woodworking about 6 months ago. I am still learning how to do a lot. I had an accident that stopped me from working full-time. I am from New Zealand.
All my woodworking has been done with recycled pellet wood. Or recycled wood. I learned how to make an overlapping Star using one angle cut on your mitesaw that everyone can use and do without difficult angles.

    1. So my father was a man of many skills and one of his best was woodworking. He thought me some as a kid but the nose was a bit much for me and the ADHD made me a bit of a pain to teach. He passed away 15 years ago and I got the desire to get back into wood working as a hobby and a way to reconnect with my father.
    2. My biggest challenge is kind of a two part one. It’s the basement. Not the best place for a wood shop for someone my hight but it’s what I got. My father was also a hoarder so cleaning it up has taken a lot of time because of issue 2 that being I’ve got a pretty jacked up back so standing, walking, bending is an issue and with a lot to clean it has taken me years to get to the point where I can finally really start. Which is good as my long term disability has kicked me to the curb and it’s this or bust now.
    3. Best tip. Definitely just the basic measure twice cut once. Which I take as a stop and think it through as it’s way easier to take away then add.
Been loving your channel and videos. It’s fun, friendly and reasonable for people just starting out to have some skill under their saws. I live in the US in the state of Vermont, hence the crappy health care system!
    4. Answering as I watch and did not know four was going to be a thing. I beat myself up for them and let myself be mad for a bit but then remember I’ve watched very seasoned pro UA-camrs make mistakes too. So as long as I learn something, it’s not really a mistake, it’s just a change to learn.
    5. Not sure. When I hurt to much and it’s good enough to be what I tried to make I guess.

Just a couple of things I would have done differently. The top could have been fixed from the underside thus, there are no fixings to hide. The 4 angled support legs could have been glued and pinned, thereby no need for pocket hole fixings. These 'legs could also have been fixed from the inside cutting out the need for hiding the fixings. We all do things differently and I think your finished item was good, but could have been made easier with my suggestions, I hope you don't mind my comments and I hope it helps you.

I'm watching this video. I watched another video by Izzy Swan. He made a video about festool. I think that's how it's spelled. I mostly watch UA-cam on my TV. You're talking about your hands hurting.. I have arthritis as well but in my back. I have to take breaks as well. I don't know if you can get fresh pot not dried. Put it in a jar and cover it with vodka, rum or any kind of alcohol. If you don't have any drinking alcohol you can use rubbing alcohol. Set in a cabinet the oils will separate. When that happens you put the oil on wherever it hurts. My grandfather got this from American Indians. And used this for as long as I can remember. He had arthritis in his hands the kind that makes fingers curl in and freeze in place. Doctors even cut off a few of his fingers when I was a baby.
I know this is a very long message and I'm sorry. Like I said I mostly watch on my TV so you're my only 3rd message. I don't know if he'll help but you could ask. Steve McDonald is a creator in the UK. He does craft and resin channels. He may help you with your questions about UA-cam.

Watched you measuring ....... still using a combi of imperial and metric 🙂 ? About using pocketholes, it's not recommended using them to put two boards together (like your tabletop). Use dowles, biscuits or dominoes. As you know, I'm not a pro (a beginner like you), but have watched hundreds of woodworking videos on youtube but have never seen anyone using pocketholes for putting boards together with pocketholes making a tabletop. I think it has something to do with strenght. About happy/satisfied with our own endresult? I think in 90% of the cases we look at our project and still see the little mistakes we've made or thinking ...... next time I will make this better or different. (you have to think again when the wife isn't happy 🙂)

    • @thewoodjunki
      @thewoodjunki  Місяць тому +1

Yes I use a combination of metric & imperial which is common in the U.K. and it’s just more of a habit.
I would have used a biscuit jointer for the top boards which I ain’t got and can’t bring myself to pay festool money even though I believe they are fantastic. There’s a dowel jointer I’ve had my eye on that flynndog in the U.S reviewed recently so I might get one of those I also think triton do one.
