Several folks asked about the guitar tuning and here's the answer in Adrian's own word: "The tuning for 1967 is my "DAD" tuning: DADDAD. it's a palindrome tuning! truth is, my metal dobro resonates in Eb, so it's the same tuning but in Eb: Eb Bb Eb Eb Bb Eb When I discovered that tuning I started writing different songs with it. five different songs, in fact. then one day it occurred to me to put all 5 together to make one song." Hope that satisfies those curious over the tuning he used for this masterpiece.
thank you! Great info. This song is a fucking masterpiece that I come back to again and again over the years. Every vignette is unique and fascinatingly complex.
He posted one day that he wanted to see what some of his old songs were liked. I said 1967. He responded with, "I don't remember the tuning." Thanks for telling me that. He's just good.
That all 5 fragments seem to capture Paul McCartney’s 1967 songwriting style, and that it’s complete with just the guitar and voice, makes this a true work of unfettered genius.
Do you repeat yourself when under stress? Do you repeat yourself when under stress? Do you repeat yourself when under stress? Do you repeat yourself when under stress?
This just flat-out a brilliant song with an incredible evocative power amidst the whimsy. One of his best. And he really pulls it off well live, too. A master at work.
Have loved Belew, Fripp, & King Crimson my whole life & never seen Belew play acoustically... This is FREAKING AWESOME, Mr. Donald Becker, thank you SO much for sharing this... God I love Belew... :)
Let this man's magic lead you into the band: The Bears, then to the Psychodots, then to fellow genius Rob Fetters and your musical life will come full circle and complete itself. Trust me on this.
This. I went that route and now I've had the pleasure of seeing a couple ametuer recordings of dots shows in addition to Rob's "Fetters is Cheap" series and it's been incredible.
He once said he learned musical theory in a "crash course" in his year with Frank Zappa. Having undoubtedly also learned much from another master guitarist (Robert Fripp), he has an impressive musical pedigree indeed.
What a brilliant musician. I first saw him appear in the limelight with Frank Zappa at the 1977 Halloween concert. Those songs he sang and performed at that show (and on the album, Sheik Yerbouti ) wowed me to no end. And it was no wonder that I saw him appear on the bill at other favorite shows I saw: BOWIE '78-79, TALKING HEADS 1980, KING CRIMSON 81-2000. And seeing him with his group The Bears at the Bottom Line was mesmerizing. (A very small venue, so we were so close to the group.) He even surprised me when I saw him appear in the Laurie Anderson's concert film, HOME OF THE BRAVE, where he was at his most abstract, I think. I mer him and the King Crimson tour of '82 or '83 very briefly - not enough to really say how much I admired his music. When Mr. Music Head came out I was again floored by this track and a number of others on the album. It was ballads like this that really opened up his soul I think. The other ones in Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King are just as beautiful. HIs guitar solos on all of these albums and with the other bands are all unforgettable to me.
Absolutely the nicest find and share on you tube. This man's head embodies a musical genius. Adrian is about to show the world he would hanging with the world's best players and writers. Genuine humankind. Thanks for the share. Darryl Johnson panco from Ledzepplica.
*jar jar binks voice* this is such a great song, and such a great demonstration of his delicate versatility and colorful, thematic song writing. Adrian Belew has subtly influenced my musical voice since I first unknowingly heard him ripping on Sheik Yerbouti. Shout out to the real ones, as they say "I'm gonna pin my soul to a hot air balloon, gonna make it pop and shoot me to the moon" *phlegmy cough*
Brilliant. The fact that most people know who Taylor Swift is, but not Adrian Belew is a sad fact of this reality... Most people prefer Pop Tarts to a healthy balanced breakfast.
Adrian Belew waits 4 the rest of us to catch up.Just like Lennon,Zappa,Coaltrane,etc.... He does not come to you,you must come to him.Frikin genious!"Men in hellicopters fly, shooting rhino from out of the sky, why do we allways assume, the planet is ours to ruin?"THANX mrdonaldbecker
this is an amazing piece of work, and I completely respect its progressive nature which moves from movement to movement...but the ' all my children' part and others could be full length songs in their own right. He's crammed 5 songs in to one incredible one
This man gave me new hope for music. where do I find the original version? One of the best songs ever written!!!! I am going to my sleeping car now with my elephants. without them I would starve
@Lightmane321 I wouldn't say he's unknown. He's played with many great performers. I guess you'd have to say he's a musicians musicians. He made an album with videos in the early 90s (I think it was) but he has never gained commercial success on his own.

Thanks for the info!
Was this from his facebook or from a magazine interview?
He's very personable & transparent online

This might be the best song ever written.
My father may have been my sister at one point
It kills me that this man doesn't get the love that he deserves, I can only hope the ones that do appreciate Adrian shower him with love.
💚🎸
So nice of him to write about the year I was born. I love Mr Music Head.

One more reason why I’ll always love him.
Adrian Belew was born to make Music ! Total talent !!!
Belew is such a treasure. That guitar playing - and that voice.
Greatest song ever written? For me, the answer is yes. Honestly.
This just flat-out a brilliant song with an incredible
evocative power amidst the whimsy.
One of his best.
And he really pulls it off well live, too.
A master at work.

God bless you Adrian! Thanks for posting Mr. Becker.
Thanks, Adrian, for a sweet rendition of a brilliant song. My favorite song ever, and what a joy to see/hear you play it ‘live’.
Rock On
He`s been, he is and he will always be great!
"The simple life...is complicated."

Whimsical poetic artistry of the highest order
Big acoustic cat.

So many styles in there
This is f'n brilliant.
The lyrics are cool too...
"When the bat-wing beast swoops down for a feast on me..."
Thanks buddy! Loved him for years. Seen him live and listened to hours of a great songwriter.
my God he is absolutely amazing, great song thank you for posting!

don't see how its possible for someone to not love this
i needed this, i have been reading far too much Elephant Talk...
Either I like this too much, Or this is seriously under-rated.
Great song, probably the best from his solo-works. This version is even better then the one on the album.
Funny that listening to this song you'd never know he led a band into a new Prog rock evolution.
Lovely, intimate and honest. Just beautiful.
definitely agree, these are some really cool lyrics and they really fit the music perfectly
Love him solo, with Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson and more solo again. Come back to Boston A.B.
Paneeks
What a mind!
Why has no one else mentioned the incredible lyrics to this song!I knew he was a guitar god but he is also a lyrical genius!
one of my favorites!

The song title is 1967 from that album.
'but he has never gained commercial success on his own'
that's what I meant. I agree with everything you said
So good.
one of my fave belew songs. He plays it so well here, even with just a guitar
Awesomely good
yes indeed, great lyrics
Brilliant.
The fact that most people know who Taylor Swift is, but not Adrian Belew is a sad fact of this reality... Most people prefer Pop Tarts to a healthy balanced breakfast.
That was good. Very Beatlesque.
fantastic
progressive folk? i've never heard anything of the sort... I guess it's Adrian Belew. btw that ending makes me laugh everytime ;)
Harmonium as well!
Adrian Belew !
This should be on the Beatles White Album.
OHHHHHH YEAH!!!! LOVE IT!!!
Relicário!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its like sketch's from a solo John Lennon album that was never made
Hey! This is great.
It's on The Acoustic Adrian Belew part II album. I think he plays this guitar on the track aswell.
Awesome! By the way, is he Ibrahimovic's father? haha =]

This man gave me new hope for music. where do I find the original version? One of the best songs ever written!!!! I am going to my sleeping car now with my elephants. without them I would starve
A very late reply but it's the last song on the album Mr Music Head. Personally I prefer this version.
nice
Wow. That’s all I can say

Lovely! When was this recorded?
What tuning is that!? Anybody know?
You got a tab to back that up???
I'd really love to learn this tune.
@Rubberdoux amen brother. really has more talent in his pinky than many of todays "musicians" have in their entire body.
I'mma try and tab this.
Les Claypool @ 0:24

the mind is a complex thing, hence the many varied movements.
...one of the greatest "unknowns"...
... a Shannon Constance lullaby .
;>
Anyone know how the guitar is tuned? Great song, thx for uploading it! :)
city of tiny lights.... don't you wanna go... hear the tiny auto horns...
@Poseidon143 'Handed down through time..water turns to wine'
whoops, I thought open D was a different tuning
Adrian Belew has a tragically underrated voice.
He reminds what John Lennon would have been if John Lennon had been an absolutely bitching shredder.
@Lightmane321 i'd say his popularity went up from being in KC and TH
