Punky.....Seattle 1979 Paramount theater....best concert I've ever seen....I still listen to the 1st 3 Angel albums quite often. Angel still remains one of my top 10 rock groups. Thank you.
I saw Angel warm up for Styx. It blew our minds when they did the “magic show” appearance on stage. The music started and stage hands brought out cube boxes and stacked them up. Than the band just walked out of these stacks. To top that! The angel face up behind the stage became animated. Holy Crap! And even better.. their music is incredible.
Angel is one of the most under rated bands. They had such an original and great sound on their albums. Punky has licks that I've never heard any other guitarists do. He has a style all his own. Barry Brandt was my second drum hero when I was around 12. First was Peter Criss, only because Kiss was the first rock band I ever heard at my age back then. But when I learned of Angel and got to see them in concert in '79, it was awesome. As a musician today still, at 60 years old, I still site Angel as a big influence on me. I often reference their earlier albums for songs I compose.
Fabulous interview with Punky Meadows. He has always understood how to look and act like a star onstage - the best makeup, hair and clothes! Yet he is so down to earth and honest. He looks great.
Punky deserves respect. He has a humble attitude, was able to make fun of himself and be a good sport back in the days of "Punky's Whips". Great player on top of that!
I read somewhere that Punky was offered a gig on both Kiss and Aerosmith and he turnned them both down. That shows his integrity and belief on his own stuff. He is an underrated player in my opinion.
Always loved Angel. Got a chance to see Punky perform with his new band at B.B. Kings a few years ago (with other early Angel member Felix Robinson who played a few tunes on bass, and also on bass, Randy Gregg). It was incredible. Punky is not only an amazing talent, but has the sharp stage moves too; really puts on the rock show. Hearing/seeing "Tower" live, it was like, "I can't believe what I just saw!" Wish I saw Angel back in the day, but this B.B. Kings gig was super cool. After the show Punky and Felix were nice to take photos with my husband and I. Great interview, thanks Rock Scene.
I was fortunate enough to see Angel back in the day when, as Punky mentioned in this interview, they opened up for Styx, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona. This was in December 1979 when Styx were on tour supporting their "Cornerstone" album and Angel were supporting their "Sinful" album. Although I thought for the longest time that it was the year before in 1978 when Styx were supporting their "Pieces Of Eight" album and Angel were supporting their "White Hot" album. Either way, both bands were awesome that night.
This is the first time I've ever heard a Punky Meadows interview. He was very candid and sounded really down to earth. I always thought his guitar solos were done very tastefully. From the interview, it sounds like they really started from the bottom and worked their way up. Way to go Punky. The guy is really a survivor from that era.
I love what Punky had to say about these people who start out playing guitar and they play as if they're only trying to impress you. They're not playing from the heart.
@@hellin69 I always wondered if black was his natural hair color. He's always had exotic looks. I was a little young in the 70s to get into their music but I liked Punky. Now as an adult I notice Frank DiMino looks good. He's aged very well too.

Just saw Angel play in Carteret, NJ. What a fun show! Punky's poster was on my bedroom wall in Colonia, NJ, growing up. Angel opened for Ace Frehley's band.
I just purchased "Fallen Angel" on CD last week. I would have got it sooner but I didn't know about it until I listened to this interview. It's one of the best rock albums I have ever heard. No bulkshit. The writing is solid. The group is tight. Punky's guitar work is beautiful and melodic. The photography inside the CD booklet is amazing--great pictures of Punky when he was coming up. A true rocker from early on. I will be enjoying this album for many years to come. The beginning brings me right back to the opening of an Angel concert 40 years ago. Great work. This album blows away anything Punky would have done with KISS in my opinion.
Saw them when they had "the pods" like in spinal tap only they worked. Guessing that's where spinal tap got that idea. Molly Hatchet opened for them on their first tour, it was a great show when America was still great.
Wow. That was very informative and very telling. It answered my question all these years why Angel wasn't bigger? It was because they were as good if not better than the headliner bands that they opened for. I remember back in the day the same thing happened to Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. I believe it was Aerosmith at the Texas Jam that was very pissed-off that night that they had to follow Mahogany Rush who absolutely killed it! I give much kudos to bands like Blue Oyster Cult & Ted Nugent for keeping them on. BRAVO.
I didn't get to see them early on, I was young enough my parents wouldn't let me go to concerts yet. However I am going to see them next March for the first time, and even though it not all the originals, I do get to see Punky & Frank. 😁
Was hoping he would mention the English Setters. Love Angel. Saw them 5 times in the 70’s. Met Punky, Frank, Mickey & Greg at one point. All down to earth guys….. Down to Earth as it is in Heaven…..

Punky still has THAT HAIR!! Very nice!!! He ripped on that guitar, man!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🌸🤟!!!!!
I never knew that the headlining bands would make the backup bands play under certain rules. Angel should be proud of what they accomplished. I always thought Punky was a handsome, intelligent and very motivated musician. No need for any cosmetic enhancement.
i love listening to Punky Meadows. He can cover a lot of things in mere seconds. No awkward pauses, just head-on telling his stories. And a cool guy too. (And he still got that hairstyle from his Cherry People days).
