1 Month Cycling the Pacific Coast Highway in Winter // 8

- After a brief but intense encounter with winter in Canada in the last episode, we were very relieved to reach the coast and its milder temperatures. We decided the Pacific Coast Highway would be our best bet to avoid the harsh winter conditions further inland, and it definitely didn't disappoint. We had our fair share of rain, but we were happy to take that over the snow and ice, and it was so nice to be back out in temperatures comfortable enough to wild camp in again!

About
In July 2022, we set off from the very top of Alaska on our bicycles, with the aim of spending the next few years cycling all the way down to the southern tip of Argentina - the entire length of the Americas. We are definitely not in any rush, and often opt to take the scenic, more remote routes where possible. Neither of us are cycle touring or bikepacking experts, but we are figuring all of that stuff out as we go. If you would like to follow along, please consider subscribing!

Hi again! Hope you enjoy this rainy episode of our time riding down the pacific coast.
Just a heads up, it’ll probably be another little while before the next episode as we have lots of riding to do to get out of the USA before our visa’s expire (current posting this a couple of days from the grand canyon) Thank you for your patience! We will be taking a short break over the hottest summer months in mexico so I will have lots of time to edit and get back up to date :)
dang so more than a month? -_- nooooo
you two are both legends. your trip and connection is beautiful!
If you need a place to crash for a few days in the Phoenix area, hit me up. I have a home in Scottsdale and have hosted many cyclists over the past few years.
And how do you like the Rohloff hub vs Derailleurs ? I love Tunbleweeds bikes and have thought about buying the Prospector myself.
Great job with the music selection and placement. You're really good at that. Truly, the video editing is superb.
Thanks so much Tom! It seems like most of my time spent editing is just endlessly sifting through music trying to find the right tracks to suit the right parts/feelings - so that is really nice to hear!
@@GregMcCahon As someone who works in video production as a day job...the struggle to find the right track is very real haha. Loving the series so far!
I 100% agree with Tom - your music selection is awesome and I really like the tracks you've chosen.
I’m a photographer and editor, and I highly agree with this comment!
We just spent a couple days with Greg and Victoria at the Grand Canyon, and what delightful people they are and totally genuine and exactly what you see in the videos, Victoria is always smiling and giggling, adorable, Greg a total straight shooter and Gentleman, we were very impressed by both of them. Happy to continue sponsoring, Keith and Rene,
Straight shooter? Please explain
says what he means, means what he says@@nicholasrubianes5368
@@nicholasrubianes5368 For a person to be a "straight shooter" means to be straightforward, honest, and upfront with the truth and/or how they feel, what they want, or what they expect.
Thanks to beautiful people like you who open their doors. There is a saying in my country, The world is turning because of the good people.
More amazing kindness of strangers -- yeah! I've ridden the same section of the coast in August 2002, October 2011 (really wet!) and in June 2021. Lots of memories came back to meet with the flashes of scenic video you have along the route -- thank you.
You have no idea how much I love your vlogs - it's the first thing I look for when I open yt! I've been getting treatment for a knee injury and since I cannot bike for now - they're even more precious now. Thank you for making them!
Hi Greg,
That is exactly the sort of bike endorsement I was looking for as I'm contemplating purchasing a Tumbleweed Prospector for a hoped for Baja Divide ride in a years time. Although it's a little daunting buying such a bike remotely from the UK when you have never ridden one or even seen one in the flesh so to speak. So Good to hear your comments. Thank you and good luck to you both.
It would be the perfect baja divide companion! I rode the baja divide last year on my prospector and it was my first proper bikepacking route. Its such a stunning place & route - the wild camping is world class!
Veramente un video fatto bene la scelta della perfetta complimenti e tantissimi auguri dall'Italia vi seguiamo con interesse ed affetto
Tough and amazing ride & camping in rain. best wishes for both of you.
Thanks for a great video! 101 crazy
That was a relaxing watch. Good to see you update again.
Chapeau great video ,yes the 101 sucks rode a bit of it on my Trans-Am ride.
I like your spirit, always jovial and complement each other very well. You make such a great couple. All the best with the remaining part of your wonderful journey!!!
Hi Greg and Victoria. Thanks for sharing your videos. I'm really enjoying them as it brings back so many good memories of a cycle trip that done a few years back now. I cycled from Anchorage to San Francisco, although I detoured up the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk, took a ferry down to Vancouver Island from Skagway. So missed cycling most of BC. Still your route and the way you two are riding it brings me so much joy while I watch them from my home in Scotland. Wishing you both all the very best for the rest of your journey (I wished I could've carried onto Ushuaia) and look forward to following your adventure.
12:11 I know that bridge!! That's in Newport! It makes me really happy seeing familiar territory on such a large scale adventure like yours. You got this!
U guys are so fun to watch
Thanks again for a great and inspiring episode! Safe adventures!
I cycled hwy 101 in Oregon, wasn’t very enjoyable for me, I got yelled at several times a day to “stay off this road” and some other mean things said too . I even had a waitress tell me to my face “ we don’t like cyclists here” . So I promised her I would tell everyone I knew how she felt about us.
Good luck!
That is living.
Wow, you were 'here' (Olympic Peninsula). Winter, not our signature season, so you'll want to come again after Argentina!
Yes, return to Vancouver Island, Canada anytime but winter. It's beautiful.
we'll definitely be back one day!
Hope is not gonna rain forver 😅
I clicked on this so fast
I’ve clicked wayy faster. Weird I had them in my head from this morning all day!
I thought I clicked fast.
You guys are good!
@Woody same! I looked only yesterday to see if I'd missed my notification for the new episode and then I get it this morning 🎉
So did I!!!
I’m so invested in your journey. It has given me a calming thing to watch during hard personal times. A way to dream a bit and not think about present day. I love the humanity and personality that is displayed throughout the video’s and i often rewatch them.
Much love!
So Canadians are great …. but NW Americans are pretty damn great also …. This warms my heart that there is hope …. I backpacked Europe twice(Italy, Greece, Turkey), 6 months each time (30 years ago) and found the same incredible kindness and hospitality every time …..

You guys are incredible! What an adventure you're having, thank you for documenting your travels.
Crazy that it was only her first flat after all these km's! Never seen someone so happy after having a flat tire.
These videos makes me smile everytime. Cheers guys, I really value these 15-20 minutes of bliss.
Breathtaking views! This is the best series on UA-cam hands down
Thanks for the serotonin boost. Glad you two were safe with that car going off!
So beautiful and resilient. So heartwarming to see that kindness still exists from pure strangers. What a beautiful but tough expedition you guys are on. You guys rock!👏🙏
Thanks so much guys I think your attitude to travel is just truly amazing. I've 63 and tomorrow I head to Japan for a month doing what you're doing. I had apprehension until I woke up this morning and found you guys on UA-cam. I'm truly look forward to getting out there now. THANKS HEAPS to you both. Your so impressive. Cheers Marc Spurgin Adelaide Australia
that is so awesome to hear! Have an amazing trip Marc!
Wonderful video Greg! Your storytelling is just awesome… just like your (and Victoria’s) great attitude, even when soaking wet!
Hola hace poco encontre su canal, me encanto hermosos pasajes tienen alla. Saludos desde comodoro rivadavia (patagonia Argentina)
Been wondering about you two. Glad to see your progress and resiliency! Lovvvve the series you're both putting together. Please keep it up.
Great editing Greg! Keep up the great content and can’t wait for the next one :)
Hello from Arizona!
Hello and welcome to BC to you both - cycling to Argentina sUUper stars Greg and Victoria! My name is Matt and I've been watching your cycling adventures for a couple of months. I see you two were going right past my side of the planet...Vancouver. I am so sorry to have missed riding a few K's showing you around my city and my best bud's town, Cultas Lake, just before that. Congrats and well done on all the K's you've covered! The California coast is magic magic magic!! So glad to see in this video you're on the 101 :) I had the privilege to run the coast as we finished a loop of North America a few years back...continued smooth roads and happy travels to you both!!! I'll keep watching and cheering you both on too!!!!
Saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina
Happy riding. Great video. Fun to see a mention of my friends, and yours, and so many cyclists, Janet and Robert! Still trail angels!
Totally agree that cycling with high speed traffic is very dangerous and not fun at all. I also ride a bike and being close to the mountain and trees are the most peaceful and relaxing routes ever.
I’ve ridden parts of the 101 to Santa Barbara, it’s awful! Stay safe
I've missed your videos. Really looking forward to your move inland.
I really enjoy the video! 👍🏽 You both are brave and adventurous! Be safe! I pray God to protect you both on the road trip 🚴🏼 🚴🏽♀️
My favorite part of the US! Aberdeen was Kurt Cobain's hometown. Astoria, Oregon, is where The Goonies was based. Canon Beach is iconic. The Oregon coastline is absolutely breathtaking. I'm so glad you guys decided to take the coastal route instead of inland! Your videos are so inspiring! Keep 'em coming!
Aside from the adventure itself which is amazing to follow, the editing and music on these videos are absolutely wonderful
man they blew through vancouver area. I was hoping to see more from my city! lol
America WILL BE A DOWNER going from Vancouver, BC, and I'm LIVING IN the NW USA (America is becoming a garbage country, thanks to Trump, evangelists, and ALL political parties. They're all villains against progress and the middle class. We're a country with no hope)!
Haha sorry Lance! We did love it there but our time was spent doing a lot of eating and not a lot of filming
Glad Victoria powered through her crash and whoa ! extra glad you did not get any closer to that car crash guys! Great Vid as usual Greg! Ride on Ride On!
Thanks for bringing us on your adventure. Stay safe & blessed
There are cool people all over the world.
And then there are you 2, you are beyond cool 😎😎
Really nice! -- QUESTION -- Why did you not travel during the late Spring and Summer? Kinda silly to intentionally pick cold seasons and then complain aobout cold and rain... You need to think in advance about when you travel and where. This is horrible weather conditions. Go in the summer and enjoy it. In winter, if you like that sort of thing, go skiiing and plan for winter activities. Personally, most bikers skip the cold countries, exept in late Spring and Summer.
You show such a wonderful mix of adventure and engagement with fascinating people.
I’m glad you liked Victoria! It’s weird for us to have snow but I guess you were here the two weeks a year we have it
Been loving this series so far. This one hit especially close to home..literally! Haha as a lifelong Pacific Northwester, it was cool recognizing all the spots y’all passed through along the Washington and Oregon coast. Also..yea, as gorgeous as highway 101 is, biking it seems pretty sketch 😅
To keep your tent dry use camp dry multiple applications The bottom of your tent, the seams.

Riding at night, wet,and windy, is dangerous. Glad everything turned out alright for you guys.
I thought about you guys from the minute I woke up this morning to right now just as I saw that you posted a new video…!! So weird! And all day I was planning my futur bike trip in my head haha I even went on Tumbleweed bikes website today 🎉🎉🎉 Cheeeers!
I was excited to watch you guys cross the pacific coast, my Son lives in Aberdeen and my younger son born in Raymond very close to Westport, I love your videos!!!
i just came across your videos and started watching by episode 1. Now i'm here. I had tears in my eyes, laughed and was stunned about the impressions and situations. It's so rare to find something real nowadays. Love your videos!
Buen viaje chicos!!!
I can't blame you for not filming on the Megler Bridge over the Columbia River. That is one scary (and steep) section to ride.
I've been waiting lol. Beautiful journey. Much love From South Africa 🇿🇦 🇿🇦 🇿🇦
I love road cycling as well but hwy 101 is not bike friendly the fact that you made it to Bandon is amazing in itself. I live an hour from Florence and when we travel to Bandon I m always nervous when I see a cyclist making that journey. Wise choice to go inland
The small amount of time you travel by road and you almost get run over. This near miss by the car puts it all into perspective really doesn't it. You spend 80% of the time in the wild amongst the rivers, trees and nature and that proves to be safer. I don't blame you for not wanting to spend too much time taveling by road. Stay safe my friend.
It is so inspiring wat hing your adventures and to realise how there are so many good people in life. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊All the very best to you both. You have such a respectful relationship it is lovely to see.😊
these videos are top notch but (to my uneducated eye) they don't seem "over-edited" which i like. your talents are allowed to show naturally.
thankyou and good luck.
Big fan of this trip and I think the videos are really great - keep up the great work! What is the pump you use at 7:30 in this video? What PSI/bar does it reach?
Victoria reminds me of the Joshua Deets character in the Lonesome Dove TV series, “Cheerful in all weathers”.
I feel like I am in a movie when I am either walking or biking next to a even a smaller road in most countries now a days. Cars driving fast with absolutely 0 consciousness for things around.
What an amazing trip and couple I did a trip across Canada when I was younger and it was an eye opener but so much fun.
Great content ... avoiding Cali hiighways seems to make sense from cycling safety view (not that Nevada desert is a walk in the park either). I hope you decided to skip northern Mexico border area altogether ...just too many sad stories from that region
Some of my best childhood memories are from crabbing in Westport. That part made me tear up a bit! So glad you guys got to enjoy my home state ❤
I've loved this series since I found it shortly after the first episode was released. Feels so very genuine and fresh, but a particular favourite is any scene with the number plates visible. As a brit our plates would only have significance if you were in another european country. Puts into perspective how big the Americas are, and how tiny my little island home is. Adore the idea, and they'll only carry more meaning the further you guys go ^-^
was wondering if you were going to come out with another video. your teaser about snow........not sure when you got to Nevada, I'm in lake arrowhead close to big bear.......and we got some snow. curious how you got by. good to see you 2 are still at it. safe travels
I couldn't do a trip like this because all the nice people who offer accomodations seem to have cats! haha Allergies suck.
Buen video saludos
what a tough girl you are cry a little and get on your bike and keep going 👍👍👍👍 you guys are amazing❤🇳🇴❤️
Awesome video as always you two! If you ever make it out to Montevideo Uruguay and need a place to stay, you’ve got one😊
I saw you in Tonopah a few weeks ago. If you need a place to stay in St George, Utah, let me know.
Dios los bendiga amigos bendiciones desde ojos frío Tony bendiciones
Can't help myself... watching a second time!!
You two are simply amazing. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Even amidst some tough conditions your filming is really beautiful. 😊
quite disappointed tom rosenthal didn't write a song about the dead whale smelling quite bad
Greetings from Brazil, it's amazing to watch your journey!
So beautiful. Thakns for share the expierence whit us.
@3:51 "Take my picture NOW". 😅 Linda!
How big is the culture around biking thousands of miles at a time❔
damn what a lucky guy! He got the lake for himself in that board 2:51
VICTORIA !!! ERES BIEN BONITA !! FELICIDADES!!

Beautiful series. Would love to see some conversations with the hosts.
dang I've been waiting on this one! nice to hear from You guys
02:09 are you travelling with a cancelled passport??? 😳
haha no dont worry, thats my old passport but it still has my US visa, so I carry it with the new one
I love your honesty about the swings of mood that can occur during bike packing
The photography is amazing and also Victoria
