Let's talk about how much money you need invested to live off dividends and generate enough passive income. Investing in the stock market doesn't have to be difficult, in fact, it's really simple! In order to understand the answer to that question, I'll start the video by showing you how much dividends I made last month in November.
Last month I made $26,168 with my dividend portfolio. That’s an insane amount of money. People talk about compound interest, where eventually your money makes you money, and then that money makes money and so on and so forth. This is a perfect example of that happening in real time. At some point, your stocks will reach a level where the compound interest and the growth on it per month is going to be more money than you can earn working a 9 to 5 job. That’s the goal. In addition to that, I made $743.57 in dividend income, and an effective $933 in dividend raises as well. So here’s the breakdown for that.
#1: $743.57 for the month of November in dividend income. But what’s interesting is if I compare that to my last year’s income in November, I only earned $409.58, that represents a growth of 81.5% from last year's November. I’ve consistently made more by just reinvesting my dividends and buying more stocks.
#2 On top of the dividend income, the second source is from dividend increases. This happens when a company takes the profit it’s made and instead of reinvesting back into their own company to make more products, they give us a pay raise. This doesn’t always happen, but I try to find companies that follow that trend. There is a downside to this. #1 I pay more in taxes because dividend income is taxed, even if I reinvest it automatically. The second downside is that the stock usually drops by exactly the same amount as the paid out dividend per share. I received $37 per year extra this month which is roughly the same as investing $933 at 4%.
If you add up my dividend increases which is an effective $933, plus my dividend income which was $743.57 that equals $1676.57. Not bad for a month’s work of doing nothing. But wait, there’s more. On top of my dividend income, I earned interest on digital currencies and this past month I made .04 BTC ($770) which is roughly $770 bringing the actual monthly passive income total to $2446 but unfortunately it’s not dividend related, and it’s not FDIC or SIPC insured so it's a higher risk than my dividend income.
Back to the original question of how much money you need to retire with dividends. To answer that question you first have to figure out what you’re comfortable with living on in terms of an income. For most people, $40,000 to $50,000 can afford them to live virtually anywhere in the world especially with something called geographical arbitrage which is where you go to a different country where the purchasing power of the dollar affords you more stuff. Like for example my city of Astrakhan, which is where I was originally born, where the average monthly net income after taxes is $249 - that’s per month - that equals $3,000 per year. Using what you’ve learned know that in order to make $3k at 4%, you need $75,000.
The reason I love dividend investing is because I can plan for my future by calculating my cash flow vs my debt rather than trying to time selling my stocks in a perfect economy. So the final answer as to how much money you need invested to live off dividends is your yearly desired income divided by a dividend yield that you are comfortable investing in. Using the standard 4%, most people need roughly 1 million dollars invested in dividend stocks to be able to live off of the passive income. If I wanted to make $100,000 a year, that would be 2.5 million. That’s really my ultimate goal. I’d love to hear yours!

    (Dividend Income)/(Dividend %) = Amount invested
    Ex: $70,000/0.02 = 3,500,000
So, you would need to invest 3.5 million dollars with a 2% dividend yield to receive $70,000 annually.

Dividends are made to live off of while your money grows. You’re investing really to retire early. Investing into a good fund such as the S&P 500 would still earn you around 10% on your 3.5 million while you’re living off the dividends of anywhere between 40K-70K a year. Not that complicated. Trust the market or trust you’re going to not blow through 3.5 million after retirement. I’ll choose the market.

If you're discouraged at him saying you need over a million $ portfolio in order to get $40k a year, don't be. A dividend yield of 3.79% is actually pretty low in terms of dividend investing. If you want to make a ton of money in dividends, research covered call ETFs. They're pretty safe and have insanely high dividend payouts, there's just less capital appreciation. BDCs also have great yields, but are riskier and are taxed as ordinary income. But this is still a great video, he does have some good stock picks.

    • @RackyRyan

Good question. Generally stocks tend to rise in value and also the dividend payments with inflation because the price of the good / services the company is selling goes up with the inflation. It is a good way to protect your money from inflation and far better than keeping your money in a savings account that doesn't pay you much.

You can also get higher yield stocks. For example, AT&T CIF NRZ RQI offer much higher yields. You can have a hypothetical average yield of 10%. Which means you only need 400k to make 40k a year.

You should look into Orchid Island, ticker: ORC current yield is 14.47% and dividend .78 per share. This is a monthly dividend and it has been giving this dividend for many years.

It was $1.68 a share (.14 x 12 mos) in 2016 and has been cut every year since then. Not a good sign. Don’t invest solely based on div yield.

Yea you need like a mil for 50-60 grand a year depending on what you invest in. Dividends are great for people that want slow long term growth for a 10-20 year plan. I’m a little more hungry so I will be investing in real estate mostly, a little dividends along the way just to lay a foundation

The first time I watched u was when u revealed your 1million portfolio and immediately I subscribed. This is the second time watching your video..good one. Anyway, I’m a dividend investor but it’s a slow and steady growth. I’m 45 and currently have a $700k portfolio and plan to retire at 60. My goal is to reach 4 million by then...I only started trading 6 months ago with an initial deposit of $400K. I repositioned some of my dividend stocks using a broker. Now, I’m buying fractional shares of TSLA, AMZN ,NIO ,NVR again. Before, I’m after dividends for passive income but it’s slow growth so now I’ll take my chances on growth stocks like SHLL, WKHS, PLNHF13 I've gotten a 120% increase this year but hopefully I’ll reach a million sooner

So many great dividend stocks out there! The trick is to diversify enough to where you actually get good dividend payments monthly

@@davidblundell7057 Always expect rise and fall mostly either on short or long term basis. Stocks are being sold at great discounts so buy as much as you can and wait for the rebound and trade as well using the right strategies for me I use a full-service broker, it definitely had an increase to the value of my portfolio and also try looking at trading from a long term perspective

So here's my question, since I'm relatively new to this: Why do you have so many different dividend stocks if dividends are usually paid out no matter what. Like, why not just put a whole bunch of money in a stock like KO. Very reliable dividend yield. The over-diversification I don't understand to the degree you are doing it. I understand having maybe, okay, like 5 REALLY reliable dividend stocks in a few different companies with very high yields...but the 100+ seems more work than it's worth to keep track of if you're not selling anyways.

Due to dividends being liable to be lowered or even cut at anytime, even with very reliable companies. With the amount of money Andrei has in his portfolio, if he only held that within 5 stocks then even a small change from like 3.3 to 2.7 for example would be quite noticeable. I recommend his videos where he talks about his monthly dividend income.

Multiple reasons. Diversification, if KO has a lame CEO and decides its best for the company to cut divis..... see where im going with this/yeh looking at you FORD. Another, your payments are going to be big in only 4 of the same months. You want it spread out for multiple reasons.... Another, is what if the current price is super high/looking at you coke $53 no thanks- was picking it up at 46$ but a couple months ago, choices my friend choices. There are even more reasons , so get to work do your research. Best of luck, -Cheers
